Hi all, just getting around to posting this. We have been RVers for almost 30 years now, having owned a 5th wheel, (big mistake), a small class B Pleasureway Lexor, a small class C Winnebago Navion Sprinter, and now a Winnebago ERA class B Sprinter, (definitely our last Sprinter).
Me, Bob, is going to be the poster here, so any postings will be by me. I'm definitely opinionated, but please don't be offended by an answer or opinion. And I am a life long gear head.

Very interested in possibly going to a PC 2100, 2350, or at a stretch a 2551, (may be too long). Some mods from the standard would be incorporated too. Decisions, decisions........

Welcome Bob--What fun you have in store for you in figuring out your model, the options, and any custom work needed to make it just right for your needs.  PC is a great crew to do business with.  Enjoy and don't hesitate to ask for advice.  There's plenty of opinions to go around for all!  :)(:

Welcome to the PC forum Bob and Sharon.

We're long-time RVers too.  Had trailers, small and large Class A's.  We now love our 2552.

Never owned a Sprinter ourselves, but have friends who love their Winnebagos built on them.

What was it about the Sprinters that you objected to?

Well like I said, we've had 2 Sprinters now, and both of them have had front end issues. Alignment, eating tires etc. The 2013 van's front end was so far out of alignment that it chewed up the front tires in 6k miles. They had to be replaced, under warranty thank goodness, but in order to get this issue fixed with the front end, we had to make several 40+ mile trips to 2 different dealers who ended up not being able to do an alignment at all. Guess who ended up getting to do the alignment, paid for by Mercedes I might add. It was a FORD dealer down the street from a Freightliner dealer, (Freightliner dealers also do Sprinter warranty work).
Sprinter dealers are so few and far between, maintenance is expensive, out of warranty repairs are VERY, VERY expensive, and they seem delicate to me. That's hard to explain but that's the way I feel about them. They take a special, must use, fully synthetic European spec motor oil that you can't find just anywhere. Also because of the new diesel emissions equipment, they can't be idled any more than absolutely necessary or all kinds of check engine lights happen requiring a dealer visit.

Granted, they do drive and ride wonderful in RV form, and get great fuel mileage for the size of some of them, usually 15-17 mpg, but then again the diesel fuel is around here is always 50-70 cents higher per gallon.
Just tired of dealing with the hassles....

Bob & Sharon bobojay,

Your long term Sprinter experience was interesting to read.  I do wonder if your alignment challenges would have been best addressed by a truck suspension shop, for example the place that took care of our Ford E350 HERE.  They did things that a regular alignment shop would never tackle like changing the bushings from centered to offset to compensate for the extreme circumstances.

About your next rig, possibly a 2100 or 2350 Phoenix Cruiser.  I have always thought that if we never towed one of our vehicles, the smaller 5.4L-V8 engine would have been the better choice for our 2350.  The V10 does a great job and I cannot complain about having more power, but I feel the V8 would do the job of getting around solo just fine.  Under extreme conditions like climbing steep grades, the V8 surely would not do the job as well, but for my wife and I, that condition is not the norm.  I'd be fine just taking on those grades a little slower.  On the flats, how fast does one in a motor home need to get up to 65 mph?  Motor homes in general need to be driven conservatively for safety sake and also for the sake of the occupants, the house, and contents.

I understand that the V8 engine would increase fuel economy by 10% and the purchase price would be reduced by $1000.  Less important but worth mentioning is that the V8 offers more room under the hood for mechanical repairs, and the engine weighs less.

The E450 chassis is another debatable subject matter to me.  Just keep in mind that the 2100 and the 2350 already have plenty of extra cargo carrying capability, more than you will ever achieve under normal use.  The E450's bigger brakes and hydraulic brake booster are surely welcomed, but a rougher ride comes with it.  Motor homes get shaken up enough as it is.  I would not want to shake up my house any more than necessary.  Maybe a leaf spring or two in back could be removed to soften the ride of a 2100/2350 E450.  In general, a softer ride is achieved by having the actual load close to the max capability of the chassis.  For example, the ride of an empty box truck will jar your body.  But load it up and the ride smooths out nicely.

I am not trying to convince you to go with my ideas.  Just sharing my thoughts, giving you something to think about.  One thing certain, I don't claim to be an expert with these things.

Thanks Ron for your ideas. I had to go where Mercedes told me to go to get that front end fixed under warranty. The Ford truck dealer was the only one they knew of and work with that could handle the 24', dually chassis with the class B RV additions. The Ford guy still had issues getting it close to the specs because he ran out of adjustment. MB makes a kit to "extend" the adjustment latitudes but the Ford tech couldn't install them because he's not Sprinter certified. The closest Sprinter dealer to us is 40 miles away and that's a Freightliner dealer, the closest Ford commercial dealer is 4 miles away, and they do a lot of fleet business, so they know the E & F series HD chassis inside out. (I would never buy a vehicle from them however)
Our first Sprinter class C had issues with shaking of the steering wheel and oil leaks of the steering rack. Multiple service visits, about 6 in all, and a new set of front tires and steering rack finally took care of that issue. All that was fixed under warranty too. But what a pain!

I'm basing my Ford chassis and engine choice on my experience with fire, and EMS service Ford vehicles over the last 10 years. Since the new Ford manufactured Powerstroke won't fit in the E series chassis, (that's why the diesel engine option was dropped from the E series if you didn't know), and several Ford long term owner folks that know how little low end torque the 5.4 generates, heavily recommend the V10 over it for a constantly heavily loaded vehicle. Would rather have the 4.56 gear ratio also vs the 4.10, again because of the heavy load. Heck, if money were not a big issue with us, I would much rather have a 4500 Chevy Express chassis with the Duramax diesel & 6L90 6 spd Hydramatic trans. But that's not an option because PC doesn't build on the GM chassis, and the Duramax is an $7k+ option.
If we would go for the 2100, we'd go for the "special" 158" 450 chassis 2100. The 2350 also. We're used to a stiff ride anyway as we've only owned trucks or Jeep Wranglers for the last 5 years. Tire pressure adjustments help with that too
The ride can be dealt with

Hello   I just picked up our 2919T on Tue. 8 26 2014. The people at the factory was very helpful. Spent the last 2 days cleaning outside and inside.
Will load Monday for our first trip next week with the Grandkids on the week end.  We have had two 5 wheels pulled with GMC 3500 dis. This is my first Ford will see how it goes.
I have been on the discussion board about 12 weeks to see what problems I can expect with a new unit.  Thanks for all the tips.

Hi,

We are the new owners of the 2013 custom gold painted 2400 PC shown on the PC website and on Tube.  Bought it in Ft. Pierce FL the beginning of Aug and took our first 2 week trip to Missouri to see friends last week.  We named it The Bear Den since our 10 yr old rescue male Bichon, Polar Bear, and our 12 yr old Sun Conure Parrot named Sun Bear, travel with us. This was our first RV and first time camping. The dog bed fits nicely behind the drivers seat and the bird cage between the chairs during the day and on the back counter by the ref at night.  A good time was had by all until the trip home.  A rock went through the windshield, kicked up by dump truck in AL.  Insurance company had it fixed by SafeLite promptly.  Then our slide got stuck and the cabinet side would not move.  Were able to manually push it in and out until we got home and call Kermit.  Will be working on fixing it this week. Anyone with tips or tricks please respond.  We stayed mostly at State Parks with full hook ups.  No reservations just stopped when we were tired.

We looked for 6 months and the 2400 was the only unit for us. We did not want to waste space on a separate bedroom, wanted the door at the back, kitchen, bathroom and comfortable seating were a must.  This unit gives us all that and more.  Everything we need fits and everyone is comfortable.  Love our new PC even with the glitches..javascript:void(0);

Welcome Bears and their Peoples--Hope your slide glitch is fixed relatively easily and I am glad to hear you are very happy with your choice regardless of glitches.  I also love to go the State Park route, especially having a doggie.  Usually there is plenty of land and roadway and trail way to get some great dog walks in, and the prices are pretty reasonable compared to private parks.
Good luck on your future travels!
