Length of Camping Trip

Just interested in seeing how long people spend in their Phoenix Cruiser.  Add any tips that make your long stays more enjoyable.  It goes without saying, your traveling companion is at the top of that list.  Also, share any problems (and hopefully solutions) you have encountered during long stays.

We've done 3 long trips w/longest being ~1mo.  Learned to sprinkle in a few multi-day stays at points that really interest us to recharge the personal batteries & enjoy the scenery.  The 2551 is co-pilot driver friendly so we switch off ~every 100mi conditions permitting.  Buying fresh foods locally is another task we try to do on the road - we've been known to scare the folks at roadside vegetable/fruit stands when we pull the unit into the gravel/dirt.  Visiting long lost friends is another fun advantage of routing your trip.

We travel with a 9yr old and a 12 yr old.  Three weeks is all I can take....   If I want to make my long trips more enjoyable I would leave them home with the grandparental units. lol.   Seriously, I do treasure the time with them as I am aware that all too soon they will not want to be with me.  If a trip starts getting too long we stay in a top notch camp ground and relax as it were and stay an extra day. By about the 10th day we need to stay in hotel and use a real shower.  It is amazing what a full powered shower and lots of hot water can do for the soul.  Of course a walk to the hotel bar and a little music helps too.

My brother-in-law started camping with his 2 kids (19 and 21 now) 12 years ago.  They have been to 38 states and his kids still talk about their RV trips.  It was a great experience for them as I'm sure it will be for your family.  We often took trips with them and had a great time.  We even hiked with them to the waterfalls of the Grand Canyon (28 miles in three days).  RV'ing offers a rare opportunity for family and friends to connect.

For the past three summers we have spent 2-3 monthes on the road. We like state/provincial parks/coe parks but also like to intersperse those with resort type private parks with amenities like cable tv, pools and internet access at the site.

Part of the fun is visiting relatives and friends.

Next summer we plan to head West. Unfortunately, the only relatives/friends we have in that neck of the woods is the daughter and who wants to go to Scottsdale AZ in July--

We get along fine.  A week never seems long enough. Six weeks we have done several times.  But, after about four we begin to think about home.

Speaking of cramped quarters, how about a family of four in a 17 foot long motor home for 3 weeks at a time?

When we became parents at the age of 25, we bought THIS motor home brand new for $12,225 in late 1983.  We would go on trips for 2 or 3 weeks at a time.  Only one 2 week trip was taken leaving our two boys with Grandma & Grandpa.  When we sold that motor home 24 years later in 2007 to buy our PC-2350, the boys then men, were terribly upset to hear of it.  Fast forward to today, our sons now 32 & 27, talk about those trips with such fond memories.

We did something right in life.

As you can imagine, just the two of us in our 2350 is a palace compared to that Mirage, probably the main reason why we don't care about a slide out......it's what we upgraded from  :)

We did three months is a larger motor home a few years ago.  With our Golden Retriever BTW.  We have only done two weeks so far at a time in the 2551.  We plan to leave end of August for about a month in it.  Wish us luck.  The worst time of day for me (the copilot) is stressing over finding a decent camp to stop at.  I like to stop early enough to get settled, cook dinner and take a walk etc.  Doesn't always happen that way.  I think several two day stays is necessary to regroup and relax a bit.  Wish us luck.

Just got back from a 2 month trip to Newfoundland, Canada, but the longest was a 3 month trip a few years ago to Eastern Canada, PEI, Newfoundland / Lab., Wife said that trip was too long and would not take any trip longer the 2 month from now on.

Three months – two adults – two 50 pound canine companions to Alaska. We were concerned about storage space so we took out one mattress and temporarily converted the area to storage space. Wife slept on the jackknife. In retrospect, we could have left a good deal of “stuff’ at home. But storage space was not an issue. If one person is seated it sure makes it easier for the other person to move around/do tasks – it’s easier to just need to navigate around the canines.

John and I had to institute a "Zone Rule" - one person moving around in a zone at a time. Anyone staying in the rig with us is instructed in the rule first thing. Examples: if John is cooking, I'm in the living or the bedroom and ask before crossing his space so we don't collide midway; If we are both in the bedroom getting dressed, one gets the floor (to access bins and change clothes) and the other waits on the bed until the zone is clear then they get a turn. Also, the one that is up asks the other if they need anything prior to settling back down. It's easier than fighting for the space and it isn't like anything is seriously out of reach for the person standing.

Our zones in the 2552 are: Living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. We were full time for a year and half (living AND working in the rig with most meals cooked and served in the RV), did a two and a half month trip with the then-8-year-old granddaughter along, and we had another adult on board for four days bringing us up to four people sharing a small space. We have since done trips with the granddaughter and one of her friends for up to four days and the zone rule has kept the frustration with each other to a minimum.

People are different and sometimes personal space is required. At that point we segregate ourselves as best as possible (bedroom door closed between us if we are stuck inside) or one of us heads off for a walk about if the weather and location are good for it. I suppose if one of us was a shopper, they could roll out to wander but that would be punishment to us so we work with what we've got.

John and I have lived weeks at a time in a small tent so the RV is spacious compared to that. It's all a matter of perspective and working out what each person needs. Long periods of serious togetherness doesn't work for everyone.

Six weeks trip to OK, TX, AR MO
Three weeks to Montreal, Quebec
Six months out west to TX, NM, AZ, NV, CA,

Being theatre folk, we have choreographed our movements like a perfect dance.  In addition, having been married and being best friends for going on 49 years,  ((hug)) we know what works.  We also have had the benefit of having lived full time as RVers (no house) for several years, so we are as much attuned to the RV life  as we are to stix 'n brix life. We keep moving. . .we're harder to hit that way! ;)    :)(:

We traveled over 3 mos. in 2015, almost 5 mos. last year, and could be 6 mos. this year especially if this heat wave continues, enjoying the cool Oregon coast.  Thinking I could use a larger motorhome or a smaller wife.
