Samsung dvd replacement
« on: November 14, 2024, 11:22:46 pm »
The Samsung dvd player w/ surround in my 2011 unit is going bad. It seems the Samsung is no longer made. Can anyone tell me what brand and model number is that’s currently used? I’m hoping it’ll be plug and play. If not I guess it’s a search for used on eBay.

It might be worth a call to the factory to find out what they are using now.

I’ve learned from past experience that you never get anyone to answer. Leaving a message is hit or miss on if or how long before you get a reply. Based on this I was hopeful someone with a newer model than mine who has what ever brand is currently used might be able to assist.
If not I’ll purchase a used unit on E bay  and hope for the best.

From the web site I can see the newest system won’t work, it’s a completely diff set up.  Ebay may be my best option.

DVD Replacement

With the primary requirement for complete replacement being size and fit in the available space, other options include newer generation technology.  Offering many additional features and improvements to ease of use and picture quality.   Advertised as "simple and compact". some are happy with the technology options.  However, some have issues with the array of options.

Opinions differ on functionality, value for money, and quality.

Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
Options to Upscale DVDs to near HD quality
Stream wirelessly from a host of online entertainment providers
Enjoy fast, stable Wi-Fi even when streaming in HD
View smartphone content with screen mirroring
Included HDMI
Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
Keep things simple with modern user-friendly interface

Whatever you buy, just make sure it offers the same connections to the TV or you'll be messing with wiring and maybe even replacing/updating your TV.

Our 2007 head unit brand is Executive that has red/blue/green RCA jack connections to the TV.  It plays CDs & DVDs, and it has am/fm radio which we rarely tune into a radio station.  It would be ideal if it also played blu-ray disks, otherwise the dated technology continues to meet our meager needs.

Someone on this forum sold me their working Executive that I keep as a quick-fix backup, just in case ours goes bad.....an indicator of how important it is to me in keeping up with technology.

Our home entertainment system is also falling behind current technology, though not nearly as much as our PC entertainment system.

Repeating.....if you don't want to mess with your TV and wiring, make sure whatever you buy is plug-n-play.

Once is a great while, I've had good luck in opening up electronic things, clean it up inside, checked solder connections for fracturing, resoldered questionable connections, and the devise is good as new.  A CD optics cleaning disk has also proven useful.  Also the extreme fine drive belts can loose their grip.  Good new ones are sold for a dollar or two on eBay.

I restored our 1976 GTE Sylvania stereo receiver that suffered from broken solder joints.  It's in our throw-back rec-room, supplying tunes down there.  People enjoy working it with the Technics stacking turn-table.  I also successully repaired some CD and cassette players.

My point here is....you can't break it any worse if you are replacing it anyway.

I’ve learned Samsung no longer makes dvd players or dvd 5-1 systems. I found a bit newer Samsung model thats blu ray capable and has the exact same connections and dimensions on EBay.  The only thing it does not have is the IPod connection which I’ve never used.

I certainly don’t need blu ray with a small tv but having so many blu ray movies on hand it’s a plus.

Ron , I agree on backup on some systems, this being one of them.  I picked up a second unit that’s the exact same of what came from factory. It of course doesn’t have blu ray but that’s ok as a back up.  They can be had as low as $15.  Even if it never gets used it’s no loss.

Like you say, blu-ray capable would be nice, if only to utilize our blu-ray collection.  But we have the same issue with our TV in the bedroom being DVD only.

Here is our total collection, most are DVDs, but many of our favorites are on exclusively on blu-ray.......oh well.  Life could be a whole lot worse.

Ron, no question, Life can always be worse. 2 1/2 years in on cancer treatments. Still kicking and grateful for every day.

We don’t have tv’s over our RV beds.  Don’t have one in our bedroom at our home as well. Heck we don’t have a microwave in our home either and have never used the one in our RV.

Oh my.....I can relate to that, but not for so long a time.

One thing certain with me, God answered the prayers of many.  I just finished chemotherapy, and starting tomorrow, will begin focussed radiation treatment on my right shoulder.  Last May, I was diagnosed with Large-B-Cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, the most aggressive type.  A few weeks back, I was told I am in remission, the raditation being only a precautionary treatment where the cancer originated and was most predominent.  There is dead cancer tissue in my upper right shoulder.  They want to make sure is stays dead until my body can absorb it and discharge it naturally.

So.... DVD or Blu-Ray........ whatever.  It is a trivial matter in life.

Ron, keep up the fight , keep up the good attitude and most importantly keep up your faith.

I have a friend who has been battling cancer for 20+ years.  It has really taken a toll on her with treatments on and off so many times yet she keeps on fighting. I truly believe it’s not just her will but her faith that keeps her going.

I purchased my current Phoenix Cruiser 2350 as a used vehicle.  The entire rig was in very good condition.  The previous owners had taken excellent care of it.  Appliances were in like new condition. Nothing had been modified to compromise the integrity of the original assembly.
Except, the original TV had been replaced with a newer "smart" version and the luggage case sized DVD player was missing.  The emptied CD cabinet had been converted to storage and became the receptacle for the grey vinyl bag containing owner's manuals.   I continue using it as a bookshelf.  A function I feel it is better suited for.
Considering my experience with the CD player, of the vintage discussed in this thread, I remember the difficulty with the front panel controls, weak/redundant radio, and obsolete player options.  I instantly accepted the reality of the space being better used as a storage shelf.
The current availability of wireless signal options allows streaming video of live broadcast and being without the CD Player makes the choice - penalty free.   Alternative DVD/Blue Ray players, smaller than a Belgian Waffle, are available with HDMI connectors.  I have one and it performs flawlessly.

I believe you describe the "Executive" branded head unit.  I agree with your evaluation of it being "weak & obsolete."  The Exective is surely NO gem.  Still, I keep ours in-service as it serves its purpose, be it barely.  It sure would be nice if it had 1970's control knobs and such for selecting the various modes and for tuning..... for user friendliness.

In my case it’s the surround sound that stopped working.  Without it I gave a difficult time hearing the Tv.   Upgrading to a slightly newer Samsung with blu ray cost wise is minimal and I bought a second unit as backup for $15.   Switching them out took all of 15 minutes and works perfectly.  Found the one on eBay in its original box and I see several listed frequently.  Odds are with the miles I have on my rig now the player will outlast the Motorhome.

First unit lasted thru 82,000plus miles.
