Ford 6.8 V10 Chirping Away (2017)
« on: November 27, 2021, 10:44:56 am »
This past summer while chasing sprint cars all over the Midwest and East I began to hear what can be described as a chirping sound on startup and acceleration.  Went to a Ford dealership in Indiana where the diagnosis was belt tensioner.  Unit had 32,000 miles at this time.  Replaced tensioner and belt, $389 later on my way.  About 3000 miles later back comes the chirp.  So we are on the road, but eventually get back to Indiana and return to dealership.  Their diagnosis: "can't really be specific, but seems there is a lot of dust around the belt area".  They suggest cleaning the area: tensioner, pulleys, etc for $500.  My answer in short was  see ya and drove home to Florida.

So after some research on various RV and Ford sites it seems this is a chronic issue.  Further investigation finds that their are 2 different serpentine belt schematics.  Mine has only 1 idler pulley on the passenger side of engine.  Another schematic shows a second idler pulley on the driver's side on the longest unsupported part of the belt.  There is a boss in the block where this pulley would have been.  On many of the forums others have reinstalled this second idler pulley and said it solved the issue.  It is not an expensive part, install seems pretty straight forward.

Just wondering if others have any experience with this issue and/or advice.  Thanks

Hello
I have a chirp in my V10 as well. I figured it was the alternator, I keep an eye on everything and haven't had any issues. It would be interesting to know if you add the tensioner and the chirp goes away.

I just started doing some research as well on this second idler pulley.  They say it stops the noise that sounds like the fuel knock around 2100 RPM. They also said the first run of the 6.8L engines had them then they removed the pulley when they changed from a 8 rib belt to a 6 rib belt.  Seeing as the pulley rides on the backside of the belt the number of groves don't make a difference. The part numbers I found were bolt p/n N808102 S437 and Pulley (Motorcraft YS-385) #1L2Z-8678-AD. I am going to call NAPA tomorrow and see if they can order me in the parts. I have the same knock that sounds like a fuel knock at 2100RPM. I also have a chrip that comes and goes which I believe is the busing in the alternator, which I can live with as some of the oillite bushings will do it on occasion as they wear.

This information came from the Blue Oval Forum, E-450 with V10 serpentine belt instability and noise, By Bullitt6283,
Here is a video that shows it,  https://youtu.be/Oa6cr2dFkPE
I would have never guessed that was it, wild...

Not sure this applies, but........

For a number of years, I owned a Ford Ranger pickup truck with the 3.0L-V6 engine.  I bought it used with a chirping belt.  I replaced the belt with a new per-spec one and it still chirped.  Long story short, I ended up buying another new belt that was 1/2" shorter which solved the problem.

I will always wonder if the idler pulley was replaced at some time by a previous owner and it was a tad bit smaller than the original one.

Hello Ron
That could have been the case with the ranger. I have in the past on other vehicles sprayed belt dressing on the belt and it would stop the noise for a little while. In this case however I took a mechanics stethoscope and I can hear it at the alternator in my case.

A friend of mine has a Tiffin Class A with the Triton V10 and he has the idler pulley installed on it. His Tiffin is a 2018, plus for my 2017 you can look up and Ford lists a idler pulley for the right side. Not sure if Tiffin just knew of the issue and installed the pulley or that frame with the Triton is setup like that when it arrives at the factory. Just more food for thought.  Does your coach have the idler pulley on the drivers side?

I added the second pulley to mine  in hopes it would resolve the minor pinging type noise I experience under no load 2100-2500 rpm.
I was very hopeful after coming across a video online showing how the belt can vibrate without the second tensioner.
Unfortunately adding the second pulley didn't seem to have any positive or negative affect and my noise persists.
Was trying to decide if I should remove the pulley but think I will leave it on for now as it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

My noise is not loud or obnoxious, almost sounds like the engine is purring under no load. (It does sound like a cat purring)
Like a soft rolling tapping noise.
I could live with it if I knew it was normal or not causing any damage.
It goes away under any load or below 2K rpm.

Have never heard a chirp from under my hood. (on this vehicle)

Here are the parts I used to add the pulley:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NSG1X4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008Y7P7OK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It was an easy 10 minute add.

Hello Jim
In my case the noise in the video mimics exactly what I hear inside the coach. Its been that way since I purchased it. I have high hopes that this solves my noise issue.  I am going to try and source the bolt and pulley tomorrow locally either from Ford or Napa..

Good to see your still around, I see some of your comments on FB occasionally.  I hope you have had time to enjoy your coach some. We are getting prepared for our Fl trip. Thanks for letting me know that you have installed the pulley and it didn't really solve your noise. I will let you know if it solves the noise I hear in my PC.
Good Luck and Safe Travels
Very Respectfully

@ Lance - Glad you saw the video before replacing your alternator. The alternator has the smallest pulley diameter of any driven device, and the smallest contact area. So when the belt tension relaxes and restores, you hear the 'chirp' of the belt getting traction again.   Stethoscope was giving you correct info. :)

GM had a similar problem with the AC pulleys in the early 2000's, had a TSB out for it. I was unable find a TSB for the 6.8 , but I am also out of the loop to get them these days.

I had a chirp when we got the coach, but put a Gates belt on and never had one since. I will use no other brand of belts.  (exactly)  Maybe something in their construction dampens harmonics/oscillations.  (WH)

I am gonna look and see if the second tensioner is on mine sometime, and add it if it is not.

Thanks for the information, I think I am going to take your lead and get a gates belt. Gates is a quality product and I have as well had good luck with them.

I never heard the chirping until this morning when I started up our PC to warm it up before our trip south. I am not sure if this is the first time it did it or because I read this post last night I was aware of the issue.

Our 2007 V10 does not have that second belt tensioner.....and we have no belt squeaking.

 2o2 2o2

And for 'The Record'  I do mean Idler, not tensioner. I have been pedantic a few times........  :-[ But we all know what we are referring to.

Yes Volkemon,  "idler",  not "tensioner".  Terminology corrected. 2o2

I was just starting my research on my engine bay "rattling" noise when I came across the post from Engineerlt with the serpentine belt noise video. Noise sounded just like the noise I heard starting at that 2100 rpm point. I did a little more research at the Forest River and Jayco forums and ordered the pulley and bolt from Fordparts.com on Sunday. They arrived this morning and took all of 5 minutes to install. Didn't even have to remove the air filter.

No more noise!! Amazing!

I was not looking forward to starting the try higher octane gas, taking it to a Ford dealer to be told it was "normal", etc. cycle.

Thanks Engineerlt.

I also just installed the pulley and it has solved the noise issue.  I bought mine from the local ford dealer, $28.75 for the pulley and $5.00 for the bolt.... Simple install..
