Battery door locks
« on: March 30, 2020, 12:46:29 pm »
Maybe y’all know this but:  one side would lock, but the other side would not.  Examination showed the rotating arm was not aligned with the slot in the fiberglass.  Previous owner had kept per evidence enlarging the slot to make the arm lock.  I got a flat file out to do the same, but with more care than had been previously done.  Looking at the arm, I noticed it would screw in or out by twisting the knob.  Ahha this makes the swing arm move in or out to fit the slot.  This gets out of align as I see it because I can’t remember which side screws clockwise or counter clockwise to unlock.    They are opposite.  So if you screw the wrong direction too much you’ve  misaligned the arm to the slot.
Sorry , slow day and I’m bored

I 'm bored too..

So.. To open them, you turn then "away" from the side they lock into.   So the lock on the left side (facing the door) turns to the right (clockwise) until it loosens and "clicks" against itself.  The right side turns to the left (counter clockwise) to open.

Just the opposite to close and "lock" them.

There... Wasn't that interesting!

My wife and I recently purchased a used PC.  The battery door locks were mismatched.  One side locked on the flange of the fiberglass exterior body panel.  The other side locked on a metal flange attached to the metal battery compartment..  Seemed the metal flange on the one side had broken off.  Also, it seemed without the benefit of a metal lock on the "strong" side, any stress imposed by a load, the weight of the battery tray would break the fiberglass (already weakened by having a slot cut).
Not being the original owner, I can only speculate the fiberglass slot was not factory authorized.
Having access to a welding machine, I modified the battery tray opening.   The addition of a right angle bracket mirroring the placement of the other metal piece seemed appropriate.  Now both sides lock into the sturdy metal frame.

These locks are like clamps, the more you turn, the tighter they get. To maintain the Righty Tighty-ness the locks can work on either side of the door (right or left), you just install one the opposite way of the other.
