WHERE might this inverter be?
« on: January 25, 2020, 10:40:45 am »
We purchased an 2013 2552 a few months ago and have been slowly learning the systems. We were told by the seller that this unit had only a converter ... and, sure enough, the Xantrex is visible mounted under the curbside bunk. However ... there is also a manual for an INverter included with our coach. Who would I call to see if this particular build had an inverter included?  And where might it be is, in fact, there isone in the rig? The curbside bunk is firmly covered. I don't want to start taking too much apart on a wild goose chase if I can get some good direction beforehand.

Thanks in advance for any info. A good Owner's Web Forum is like pure gold for people who need quality information. One of the very best things about owning a Foretravel is it's owner's Foreforum.   Foretravel had schematics for every coach they built ... from day one ... stored in their archives. If you neded the info, you could call the Yoda of that department and he would look on the blueprints for you and help to locate a possible source of the thing you needed.  I am hoping that Phoenix will have a similar Yoda in their system, somewhere!

Our 2017 2552 has both and are both located under the passenger side bed. Hubby says xantrex is the inverter. The switch for it is behind the drivers seat on the wall where the other controls are to check tanks etc. So, if you have the switch you should have an inverter.

And what type of "inverter" does your manual speak about?

The Zantrex is a modified wave INVerter that converts 12v DC from the house batteries intp 120v AC to power the TV and the standard household 120v outlets by the sink and in the bathroom.

In the power panel, for things like the water pump and interior lighting... There is a CONverter that takes the 120v AC from shore power or your generator and converts that to 12v DC and then feeds that 12v to the 12v portion of the fuse panel. That also feeds/is part of, the charger circuit that recharges the house batteries.

I am fine on the difference between an Inverter and a CONverter. We have mads some calls and on the control panel behind the driver's seat, we get a message that says "fault". We were advised to disconnect the house batteries for 45 minutes and then reconnect, to see if that reset the unit. No dice. I am pretty sure that the curbside bed will have to be dismantled to get to the unit. Has anyone had to do this?  There must be a short somewhere or the unit has failed. I don't think just taking the panel off is going to be enough access.

Thoughts?

If you have the manual (and if not, can probably get online) try to get the fault code before you start and look up that fault code to get an idea of exact cause.

That's the Xantrex inverter.    To get to it, remove the passenger side mattress, remove about 14 screws on the plywood mattress base.  Lift the plywood off.

The inverter is mounted on the kitchen end of the front panel.  I don't know how handy you are but there are seversl LARGE wires on plug in connectors that you need to wrestle with to remove the input and output connectors.

Once they are off, I believe the inverter itself will be latched into a mounting bracket.  You will have to take it to a shop for repair.

Mine went bad in my 2012 PC. Yours has failed

This is what you need,
Xantrex XM1800 Pro Series 1800 Watt Inverter
I only paid $319 last year but now $400 at the same store with shipping.
https://xantrex.factoryoutletstore.com/cat/83096/Xantrex-Pro-Series.html

Maybe PC can sell you one cheaper, call Carol at Phoenix

Not hard to change as donc13 described., but don't waste your time with repair.

If you go the purchase route you may consider getting a automatic temperature compensation charger if you plan to go with AGM batteries in the future.  Lifeline AGM recommends a charger that is temperature based.  Here are FAQ on there website.

What is the best way to charge my battery?
Charge with a 3 stage charger that compensates the voltage setting as the battery temperature changes.

What is the best charge voltage setting for outdoor applications if temperature sensing is not available?
NONE! Charging voltage varies widely depending on the battery's temperature and there is no single voltage that will work over a wide temperature range. Batteries will fail prematurely if this is attempted.

Here is a link to Lifeline technical manual.  Page 19 shows charge rate for range of battery temperatures.

https://lifelinebatteries.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/6-0101F-Lifeline-Technical-Manual-Final-5-06-19.pdf

I am not sure how a charger could know battery temperature.  I would think chargers use ambient temperature.  The battery will change temperatures slower than ambient temperature so a charger can never get exact voltage to charge.

My Xantrex bulk charge is 14.2vdc and float charge is 13.5 Vdc. This I feel is close enough to the temperatures/charge values on page 19 of above manual to adequately charge the LifeLine AGM batteries for the temperatures we see when charging is needed.  When I am ready to upgrade to AGM I will call LifeLine to verify.

His problem is not with his converter but with his inverter. The inverter is a totally separate unit.in his model and that is what has failed.

Thanks for the correction.  This stuff turns my mind to mush!

After a bit of research, we happily replaced the inverter on our 2013 2552.  I am very familiar with Xantrex inverters, as we had those on our Foretravel. We did use a local RV Repair shop ... because we are old and lazy and have realized that our best tool in most instances is a credit card and a telephone.  The job was easily accomplished, the shop had a very decent price on the Xantrex inverter and reasonable hourly rates. Think we will use him again.  We don't boondock very often, but everyone needs to be ready for a night in a Walmart out of necessity ... pressure for time, bad weather, illness, etc. Now we are good to go!

Thanks, everyone, for the help and advice. I am slowly learning this rig and the systems. Of course, they are VERY close to what I am used to ... but not quite.
