New tires, replacing factory ones
« on: July 30, 2019, 02:59:23 pm »
Hello!  I know new tires have been discussed in previous threads but it's been awhile.  We have a 2006 2551 with a 450...Has anyone changed tires to something new and like them better?  I feel as if there might be something bigger and better, something not for an SUV or light truck?!   It's time to replace ours regardless and any input would be appreciated.  We've been saving up for a bit and would just like to get some great tires for full-timing.  Thanks and safe travels!

No regrets with my Bridgestone  Duravis R500 HD’s 2o2

Even if you don’t buy your tires from Tirerack.com, its a great  website  for  comparing tire ratings, test results,  and actual customer reviews. If you are looking for input, thats the place to start before you go price shopping.
Goin' where the wind goes...

Here is a link to a discussion topic that Ron Dittmer began at the end of 2018.  He mentions some tires that carry better load ratings than the standard 2680 pounds found on the normal "E" series tire (though I believe that all are still LT-type tires):

https://forum.phoenixusarv.com/index.php?topic=3497.msg29723#msg29723

You might also do a quick forum search on "Rickson".  That should bring up some discussions of the Rickson wheels, which several PC'ers adopted to greatly improve load carrying capability over the standard units.  The Ricksons are 17.5 inch wheels rather than 16, but use a different tire configuration (215/75R17.5) which results in approximately the same final tire diameter.  Since these are load range "F" and "G" tires, they can bump each tire's load rating by almost 1000 pounds.  Downside is that this is an expensive move, since the new wheels will add about $900 to your new tire bill, the tires are more expensive as well, and then new wheel covers would add another $400 to that.
The Ricksons have primarily been a solution for the 31-foot PC's with multiple slides that are virtually operating at load capacity on some of the tires as they roll new out of Elkhart.  With your 2551, they would probably be overkill, but would put you in a regular "truck" tire, as opposed to "LT".  The units like Ron identifies in his post, would be a much less expensive way to upgrade ratings to some extent when you change out your tires.

All the best,         Mike

I would not consider the extra-load-range tires for the lighter-weighted model 2551.  I assume the side walls are thicker and will make for a rougher ride.  I might consider them for model 2552, but definitely consider them for models longer yet.

Weigh your axles, then compare the tire ratings to those numbers.  You surely want some margin of which I think the standard "E" rated tires offer plenty for models 2551 and shorter.  Excessive tire over-kill will "earthquake" you and your rig to death.

Take a look at my post of April 14, 2019 entitled:  "225/75R16 Tire with Very Goos Max. Load Rating".

If anyone is looking for a 225/75R16 Tire with a Very Good Max. Load Rating take a look at the Michelin Agilis Crossclimate now available in the USA ("https://www.michelinb2b.com/wps/b2bcontent/PDF/AGILIS_CROSSCLIMATE_B2B_product_sheet.pdf").

Max Load Single Tire 3,195# @83 psi.

Max Load Duals 3,085# @83psi.

Thank you all for the input, will go back and look at the threads mentioned.  We definitely don't want a rougher ride, was hoping for a bit of the opposite.  I have chronic vertigo so the smoother the better, no earthquake feeling please.  We aren't loaded super heavy, just wanted something that would last and provide a comfortable ride for all seasons.  Just wanted the best bang for our buck since buying seven tires never seems to be budget friendly.  Thanks again!

Thank you, I've been looking at that site.  It's just confusing because Michelin which came with the PC didn't make the list.  The Sumitomo Encounter HT which has the highest rating, the first review talked about how horrible it handles. So I'm eyeballing the Bridgestone as of now which were mentioned in this thread.  I read a review of someone who loved them on their 40ft trailer.  I'll let everyone of course know what we end up with and how they handle.

Thanks again,
Sarah
