Roadside Assistance
« on: March 21, 2019, 11:21:12 am »
I know that this is a topic explored before, but was hoping there might be new takes on the subject.  I just got my Good Sam Roadside renewal for $150.  Is this worth it in that I believe I have assistance via my insurance carrier and also Ford.  Have never had to use the Good Sam.  All thoughts appreciated.

Check out the roadside assistance from FMCA. It’s significantly lower cost than Good Sam. I haven’t heard many good things about Good Sam. At one point I found a comparison online, between FMCA, Good Sam, and AAA and if I recall, FMCA was the winner. Try doing a search. I will have to search again myself.

We have used Good Sam roadside assistance three times.  The first in 2006 and the other two recently with excellent service from Good Sam and their providers.  That said, it would appear that their prices have gone up significantly.  We have another year to go that
we bought  2 years ago using the points from our Camping World credit card.  We no longer shop at CW so will also be looking at all other options.  From a service perspective, I wouldn't have any issue using them again.

Mike, I have used Coach Net for years and would consider nothing else.  FMCA now offers a plan, but I have not investigated.  People always comment..."all the plans use the same road service teams".  This may be true, but Coach Net gathers the info concerning your situation and uses it to send out the proper help.  I have the Coach Net plan that covers any car I am driving and also my motorcycle.  I highly recommend Coach Net.

As a side note, I am a Charter Life Member of Good Sam, but over the years I have come to avoid all things Good Sam AND Camping World.

Cheers  :)(:

We will NEVER use Good Sam (or shop again at Camping World but that's a different tale) and here's why.  The one and only time I called Good Sam Roadside Asst was after a front tire blowout on my Fleetwood Class A.  The blowout occurred about 5pm at highway speed on busy I-85 and I was pretty rattled afterward.  It was 95 degrees out but I got stopped under a bridge overpass for some shade.  When I called GS a giggling young lady answered the phone.  I answered all her questions (what state, which highway, what mile marker on that highway, etc) and she said she would send help.  I happened to be about 15-20 miles from two pretty good sized cities in North Carolina (Winston Salem and Greensboro).  I waited a couple hours and finally got a call..."I'm here but I don't see you" he said.  "I'm right here under the bridge at exit 102" I replied.  "No I'm on the bridge looking down - there's no RV there".  Then he said "are you headed toward Spartanburg" and it hit me - SHE SENT HIM TO THE WRONG STATE.  The helpful tire man was in South Carolina (and ironically dispatched from across the border in NC to go there).  I had some lively discussion with GS when I called back, but the short version is I had to wait until the next day to get my tire changed because "we can find anybody tonight."

The next morning about 10 am a nice young man from Schneider's Tire service got us back on the road.  Interestingly he told me that he had seen us a couple times the evening before sitting under the bridge, and that they (Schneider's) get calls from GS "all the time" but GS did not call them until that morning.

I understand that many folks swear by GS and this is just one story - but it was enough for me to say enough.

We are long time AAA members, and added the RV to our plan.  It's top tier, We get (1) 200 mile tow and (3) 100 mile tows a year. For our limited travel at this time, it works perfectly. Hope I never need to use it.  (nod)

The founders of Coach Net are the ones the created and run the service sold through FMCA. Don't remember all of the history behind that.

I had GS for years but never really used it except for a locked door once. Switched to the FMCA sourced one as much lower in cost and a decreasing trust in GS overall. Haven't used the FMCA one as yet.

The service is also the one sold through the Escapees but FMCA had a lower price.
