Custer State Park

Hello, asking for tips, suggestions or any pertinent information on visiting this park and surrounding area.  Currently planning on making the trip early September this year.  I am probably looking at four days travel  time from central Florida and requesting how many days to experience the area.  Questions I have revolve around recommended rv parks with FHU  and the availability without reservations in the event I want to park hop in the area.  I don't have a toad, possibly tow motorcycle, car rental would be an option as well if weather became an issue.  Wx Sept  averages indicates highs 70's. Lows 30's, could be brutal on this Florida boy.  I haven't tried to make reservations yet as awaiting responses from this post.   Due to time restraints, I will confine myself to Custer, Spearfish along with the other must sees in the area.  Thank you for your consideration.

We were at the park last September on our way back from Alaska.  I towed the motorcycle and was glad I did; the area in and around Custer State park is some of the best MC riding in the country.  Beautiful scenery, lots of wildlife and some great curves.  If you look at the Sturgis website:  https://www.sturgis.com/content/rallyinfo/future-rally-dates.html  you will find excellent info on camping, dining and popular motorcycle rides.  PM me if you want specific info:  Tom Snyder  tswhitewater@gmail.com

I visited the area in September several times and the weather was warm.  Cool nights, but that’s perfect. Make sure you visit Deadwood.  Yup it’s a tourist trap, but it’s lots of fun. Black hills are really special. Bear Mountain, aka Devils Tower was very moving for me. Very spiritual for me.  Sacred to Indians.   The whole area is awesome.

Legion Lake C.G. in Custer is really nice by the lake and in the trees.  It's not too big but you shouldn't have a problem with reservations this early.  The park won't be too crowded after Labor Day  except for the buffalo walking past you.  There is another campground in the park- sorry I can't remember the name.  It was much larger and more out in the open tho'  the bison made their presence known there also.

The Spearfish City C.G. in town is one of our favorites.  There is a restored fish hatchery on site.  They have several miles of walking/biking trails along the river  and turkeys in the trees.  We've also seen turkey vultures in the same trees but not at the same time.  I usually ride my bike although it is walkable in to downtown for an ice cream cone.... however you will not feel like you are in a city.

P.S. John and Holly,  this could be a good place for the midwest get-together.  They have a privately owned event hall on site available for rent.  There are quite a few places for day-trip entertainment , Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore etc.

Thanks Patti, we've been there to visit family that live above the park but didn't stay at the park. We'll add it to the list to check out. It could be perfect. There's a ton of things in the area worthy of day trips.

Good morning!  Please check the 7th Ranch RV Park located near Garryowen, Mt. It is located near Custer State Park (5 Miles). Great place to stay with full hook up, level sites. Showers and laundry facilities are clean.  Please check their website. We stayed four days during August 2017.  Enjoy the trip.

I know this isn't SD but if you need a place to stop in northern GA Amicalola Falls in the northwest part of the state is incredible!  Now to SD, a stop at the Badlands is time well spent.  Also, check into Minuteman National Monument, it is seriously cool!  In Rapid City there's an Air Force base that offered tours when we were there several years ago.  I'd type more but I would just repeat what was already said.

You will love Custer State Park, it is one of our favorite places in the Black Hills. Two super nice campgrounds within the park are Legion Lake and Game Lodge. While you are in the Black Hills you probably will want to visit Wind Cave National Park and it isn't far from Custer State Park. Drive the wildlife loop also to see herds of buffalo. You will find plenty to do and see in the Black Hills, enjoy.
