Alaska Bound in our 3100 --Any special preparations needed
« on: April 15, 2019, 07:18:13 pm »
My wife and I are headed to Alaska this summer in our PC3100. We aren't planning to tow which may or may not turn out to be a good decision. We have gone twice before and towed both times but that was when we had bigger class A's.  Has anyone driven up in their Phoenix Cruiser and did you make any special protective coverings etc. for the Ford grille, headlamps or for underneath the motorhome. Any input would be appreciated.

We drove a truck camper from TN to AK in 2007 and drove our 2018 2552 from TN to AK last summer.  The 2018 trip totalled 11,500 miles, as we entered Canada at Sault Ste. Marie and drove the Trans-Canada to connect with the Alaska Highway at Dawson Creek.  We spent about 6 weeks in Alaska, about 18 weeks total time.

The big change we noticed was that northern Alberta (Grande Prairie to Pink Mountain) has apparently sold its soul to the oil companies, and the roads have been overtaken by huge (40+ tires) trucks that fling large rocks with abandon. We lost our windshield just south of Dawson Creek.  One note:  the glass repair shop in Dawson Creek asked if the windshield had any special features (tinting, special sensors, etc.) and we said that a vanilla replacement would be fine, as it was in stock.  Other than this, we did no prep work had no damage. (By the way, we prepped the heck out of the truck camper and had no damage that time either.)

We pulled an enclosed box trailer with a 650cc motorcycle and were glad to have the smaller size transportation, especially in places like Homer.  The trailer took major surface damage, especially in the fenders.  Since you're downsizing from a Class A, you'll probably appreciate the agility of the 3100, but gas is still expensive (it averaged US$4.40 last summer).  The 2552 drove great, better than the truck camper, which rode on a Dodge 3500 long bed dually.

Hey thanks for the info. I was really concerned about the open spaces on the Ford grille and rocks flying through to the radiator. I guess conditions have gotten worse by Grande Prairie than they were in 2015.
