Advanced RV air conditioner
« on: November 08, 2018, 03:47:28 pm »
I am wondering is any PC owners have had experience with a/c units sold by Advanced RV. Our a/c installed on out 2017 2552 is so loud and thumps when it cycles we rarely us it.  Anyway, we have looked for a quieter and more efficient unit and found Advanced RV sells a unit from Australia that is three times quieter and 20% more efficient. Price is high, $2741 installed and waiting list is long. February at the earliest. So will install it myself. I know most of the problems on installation (240 volts/50cycles vs our 120 volts/60 cycles, etc) but would like to hear from anyone who has actually heard, seen, or felt this unit. Thanks (WH)

Another member of this board has reported a lot of detail on this AC unit.  I cant remember who it was, but I am sure he will see your comment soon and comment.  You might do a search of "Australia" here

Not commenting on the Advanced AC units, but more towards the loud start complaint -

I have been looking into these, and found nothing but praise. This is NOT just a capacitor.

""How difficult is installation in an RV?

EasyStart mounts inside the rain shield on a rooftop unit. The wires are run to the electric box and connected to four points in the box. We have many wiring diagrams available for rooftop units and in some cases complete installation guides. Although most customers install EasyStart themselves, a few opt to have it installed by their RV dealer, HVAC technician or electrician.
""

I have read many accounts of how it reduces the start up noise of the compressor significantly. Many claim it eliminates it.

The primary benefit is that it allows a small generator or inverter to run the AC. Thats what got me looking at them. Many people find it allows 2 AC units to run on a 30A service.  :-D

May solve the noise problem with a lot less money.  2o2. Have not purchased one yet, I am behind in installing the current purchases for the camper as it is, so Mrs V will NOT approve of any new purchases until I get some things installed. What a wise woman.  heartshower

Just got back from a cold and snowy trip the Cleveland, OH where I had the Houghton A/C unit installed. They gave us a demo prior to installation. Amazingly quiet, has three speeds, dehumidifier mode, and is controlled by a remote. No heat strip. So lay in bed and change the temp. The temp you set is displayed on the outlet; speaking of which is thinner than the Dometic by an inch giving me more headroom. I'm 6'3". It is just below the interior lights by half an inch. They installed it in about six hours, have a nice lounge, and invite you to look at their high end Class B units. Advanced RV units are very high tech, high end units. They have a 2016 used unit with 16000 miles 4X4 MB loaded for a mere $254,000. We are off the Florida  ;) next week so will write about how well it works (or not) Cost was just over $2800 with tax. A little high but I cannot sleep with that Dometic tornado roaring overhead.

If passing n/w of Chicago on I-90 at Route 31 at the Elgin/West Dundee IL exit, regular 87 octane gas at the northbound exit, Thorntons & BP was $2.01, jumped this week to $2.35 but coming down daily, yesterday at $2.29, very cheap considering the area.  A Thorntons club card holder saves an additional 3 cents a gallon.

I don't know what a diesel fuel bargain looks like.

I’ve been in contact with advanced RV this past week. They are too far to go just to have one installed however they are now selling direct to consumer. The cost is 2137 plus shipping. A new 15,000 btu penguin with a ADB runs about 1800.00 so it’s really not that much more. If it’s really three times quieter as the claim it’s on my wish and hopefully done soon list.

I look forward to hearing what Ron & Toni have to say. I’m itching to pull the trigger.

Hi: Has anyone here talked to PC about the possibility of this upgrade on a new build?
I am very interested in this as an option.
Would also value opinions  about the need for 2 A/C on a 2552 w/ insulated windows.
Was thinking I would go for the 50A 2 AC option but perhaps upgrade one of the units to the Advanced RV AC.
Plan would be to use the upgraded unit in the front as primary cooling and the smaller AC in the bedroom only to supplement during extreme heat.

Part of me also wonders if a single Advanced RV AC unit might be adequate on the 2552.

Also, what is the penguin ADB mentioned above? Never mind found it. Air Distribution Box

I really appreciate the combined wisdom found on this site.

When we saw our first PC, it was a 2552 and we were in Sioux Falls, SD and the temperature was hitting 100 degrees every day.  The couple who owned the PC welcomed us in their unit and offered several suggestions to consider when ordering.  The first suggestion was to get 50 amp service which provides for the second A/C.  Their single A/C was unable to keep up in the 100 degree heat.
We upgraded both of our A/C units when we ordered our PC.  We went to a 15,000 unit in the front with a heat pump and a 13,500 unit in the bedroom area with a heat strip.  We changed the rear unit from the stock unit so that both units would be controlled by wall thermostats.

Jim,

I think you probably already know my input regarding 50 amp & second A/C from my earlier comment to you.  Obviously a primary consideration is where you will use your coach--if you just never get into REALLY HOT weather, you may never be uncomfortable with the single A/C.  In southeast Oklahoma last year we had some multi-day strings of 108-112 degree days (not uncommon for us).  Unlike the desert heat, humidity was also high adding to the heat load.  One can run into similar conditions traveling in other areas of the south and gulf coast.  There is simply no way a single 13.5 or even 15K BTU A/C can maintain reasonable conditions in a 28-foot coach under those conditions (insulated windows or not).  If you can avoid those circumstances, a single A/C may be all you need, but chances are that over your ownership some of your travels will result in that type exposure.  The other obvious consideration is that the 50-amp service and second A/C is one of those things that needs to happen in the initial build, if you ever want it--adding later would probably not be impossible, but would be a pretty major project.

I first became aware of information on the Houghton A/C imported and sold by Advanced RV on this forum.  Initially they were not making them available for direct sales to consumers, and by the time they started that program it was unfortunately too late for me to explore the possibility of coordinating with Phoenix to see if they would install them in my build.  I don't have experience yet with living with my Dometic units, but the single most frequent complaint by far deals with the noise.  Since I took delivery in February, I only briefly started mine to ensure they're working properly--but they are loud.  If the Houghton units reduce that noise as much as all the information implies--I believe I would have invested the extra money to install them if Phoenix is willing.

All the best,       Mike

Mike and Gary: Thanks for the clarity on this issue.
I was intending to do the 50A 2AC option until this morning when I started adding everything up and looking for ways to save.
I agree this is not the right area to skimp. I have camped in my 32' fifth wheel on occasions where my single 15K unit could not keep up and it was not pleasant.
The benefit of redundancy is a plus as well.
I will wait to see how much the Advanced RV AC upgrade will cost before deciding to upgrade one or both units but there will definitely be two AC units. Thank you!

Just got home from Florida. We had about 10 days in the high 80's and  two days that were 91. The Houghton a/c kept our 2552 nice and cool set at 74 degrees and cycled on and off as normal. Very happy with it. Back in PA now and PC is in the barn. Dang.

...but what about the noise? How much quieter would you guess it is when operating? Is the reduction in noise worth the cost?
