Storage Covers
« on: May 29, 2018, 01:56:03 pm »
Hi to all,  As my wife and I are getting closer to delivery we've been researching storage options.  We'll not be able to store it inside so we were wondering about ideas anyone may have regarding a cover to place over our rig when we're not using it.  I've got a place to park it at home and at some point there will be either a carport or open ended pole barn for protection but what to do until that decision is made?

Thanks!
Gary

My second motorhome was a new 1996 Bounder 34J.  I was able to park it in my back yard.  I bought a cover.  Eventually, it became somewhat of a pain to put on and take off.  Granted the Bounder is larger and taller than a PC.  I have never again considered a cover.  Look at it like this...if you were on the road a lot, it would be outside.  Just keep it cleaned off and keep it "waxed" or some other way of protecting the paint.  I used a product called "The Solution" and is great for clear coated surfaces.  I now rent an indoor storage bay and will use it for my new PC. I just sold my Diplomat that I had for 17 years and the paint was in great shape.  On the other hand, a cover protects more than the paint.   It boils down to a personal decision.

Had a cover for 1st RV, Never had one with either Phoenix since 2006.
Maybe more necessary in different climate.

Main reasons NOT to use a cover:

1.  Easy to accidentally step off of the roof ending your RV days or your life!
2.  Easy to step through or damage a ceiling mounted item or to slip on a partially installed cover and fall off
3.  Usually poor fit
4.  Honestly, item 1. is the best reason - I'm 65 and don't plan to be on the roof except to do a cursory inspection.  The risk is just too great as we age.

I'm not too keen on putting a cover on but we have a lot of Walnut trees which give off a lot of dust and small stain causing leaf debris which I'm not keen on cleaning off either.  The trees are an investment in standing timber and won't be ready for harvest for another ten years so they're not going anywhere.  Safety is definitely a prime concern!  Any ideas besides a cover to keep the roof clean?

Thanks!

No matter what Class unit we purchase, the roof takes a beating if the unit is left out in the sun - and as you point out, for some, it's not just the sun!  I guess the obvious is to try to find a storage facility that
has covered storage.  If you store at home, perhaps a dedicated pad with a simple cover?  I know these aren't the best answers for your problem, but I don't know what else to suggest.  We happen to have a
very innovative person in our town who realized there was a market for indoor RV storage and purchased an abandoned warehouse.  He's got to be a millionaire now - the place is full of high-end coaches.  He
also provides 50A power and guarantees the temp will never go below 38 deg (he retained the heating system). Wish I had thought of that!
