Coach House Trade-in Question/ PC 2551/2552/3100 Availability

Linda and I are looking for a 2552/2551 or 3100 PC.  We are considering a trip to factory to look at some of the options on a new PC. I noticed that a used Coach House is for sale at PC. That is also a possibility.  It will be nice to be able to compare PC and CH. (PC is higher on our list).

To help consider the CH it is always good to know history of a vehicle. So, if the previous owner of the CH is willing please email me at sarz272000@yahoo.com with any information you think may be helpful.

Also, anyone looking to sell a good 2552/2551 or 3100 email me with the details. We are looking to buy/ order very soon, but can wait if someone is selling later in the year.

CH and new PC on RV Trader. Seems that PC is not updating their web site with any regularity. Hopefully they are creating a new web site.  It would be a shame if they abandoned current web site and forum.

That Coach House looks quite nice.  Their "asking" price is not out in left field either.

I would love to get your honest opinion on how Phoenix and Coach House compare.  Of coarse Coach House is a step ahead of Phoenix having a seamless body.  But does the "quality" stop there?

Things I did not care for were.....
- tiny shallow bar-style sink
- stove turned sideways
- very tight galley in-general
- dinette table looks very small, also wonder how the leg room is with people sitting across from each other
- inside of all cabinetry is white which marks-up easily from bouncing items
- what is the story concerning the rust on the lower side of the slide out, wonder if this could be chronic on every CH
- lack of storage in the B+ cap area

Things I liked....
- seamless body
- dinette seating appears to be very comfortable and easy to setup a bed
- seeming a decent strong rear bumper that does not stick out beyond the spare tire
  it stores the waste hose so it might be very weak, a decoration, not a decent bumper.
- top-hinged over-head cabinets with push-button latching knobs...no head banging when door is left open
If ordering our PC again, I would consider requesting top-hinged doors above our dinette.  Good thing I have a full head of hair to cover the scars on my scalp from hitting the corners of an open door.

we looked long and hard at Coach House before purchasing our first PC (2351) The big problem I thought was that it is very heavy. So they had to go to More-Ryde for the rear suspension. And they were very expensive. BUT the cabinets and hardware were great. See the hinges and latches in the photos. Now, if PC would upgrade the cabinets/drawer hardware. Hello, Hello, PC, are you listening. 

We owned a 27' 2010 Coach House and honestly, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be.  It was a low mileage unit and in good condition.  But here's a few of the disappointments:  the exterior paint seemed to be soft - easily scratched; the commode was angled so as to force your leg into the door or the aisle if you left the door open - never could figure out what drove that placement; this unit had push button, spring loaded cabinet latches - I believe they were German made, but were easily broken and a headache.  And, we just didn't think the quality was what it should be for the pricing.  By the way, we visited the factory before purchasing and had a great visit - very nice people.

I installed a button latch on each of the 3 drawers in our reconfigured base cabinet, details and pictures HERE.  I understand your comment about them for I too thought they could have been made better for they did not operate smoothly at all, sometimes even binding up.

I was able to get them to operate as smooth as silk by spraying silicone lubricant throughout the internal mechanisms.  I sprayed them during the reconfiguration process four years ago and the latches work smooth as silk to this day.  The manufacture of the latches should have done that.

O.P.-  If you buy a Ford Powerstroke diesel rig those funky Coach House cabinet latches will be the least of your worries.

Cal, odd, I’ve got several friends and know many farmers with those engines in later model trucks with no issues other than the one that would keep me from any diesel after 2007. That damn DEF system .  In that case be it Mercedes, ford ,Cummins , cat and on and on you are in for headaches and expense sooner or later due to DEF.   I can’t find one good thing about DEF.

FWIW, a close friend of mine is a certified Ford mechanic for many years now.  He said that 6.0L diesel Ford discontinued around 10 years ago in the E450 was a terrible engine.  Where he and I both volunteer as mechanics for charity, he clenches his teeth every time any Ford vehicle with that engine gets donated, most often comes in an F-series.  He knows it's been donated because of the same old trouble.  It is his reoccurring nightmare of which in reality he is happy to serve the ministry in that capacity.

This is all a mute discussion now because that Coach House is sold.

Ahhhhh! 

We looked a couple of CHs. We concluded they are way too expensive, feel like you are in a cave, are cramped, and the paint is not good quality.  Their twin beds are longer and roof is less prone to leaks. Don’t like not having a ladder to view roof. They do have suspension items already installed. They have ducted a/c. We went to factory to view a used one and tour the factory. We felt like we were bothering them. Requested a tour while there and was ignored. Also I heard getting parts for interior items like faucets and such can take a while because they are high end from foreign countries.  The one that sold at PC would have been priced $20-$25k higher at their factory just because it is a CH. BTW CH had the peeling fake leather issue as well. They usually replace material on every one that comes as trade.

PC has always been a great experience for us whether at factory or talking to owners. The unit is high quality and is the nicest Looking RV around!  The recent price hike is of concern as is moves it further out of reach for buyers but keeps resale higher!  I shutter at any units with fake leather. $4-5k replacement bill coming in the future depending on your solution. We prefer cloth but not many around.  We stay away from multiple slides do to limited chassis capacity. After a recent viewing by kind PC owners I have another issue. It didn’t seem to be a problem at first but the more I think about it the more concern I have. I am 6’2” and bump the a/c unit along with anything on the ceiling close to the side walls. I knew that but on the visit I nearly smacked my head going into the rear bathroom. That could be a problem in the middle of the night. A second a/c unit in the bed area could also be a problem. Ugh I long for ducted a/c!!  On the other side Linda is short so she enjoys the easy access to everything, something she has never experienced!! Quite a conundrum! Not sure what we are going to do. Lazy daze an option but we are not really enameled with them. I refuse to look at mass produced units, but may be forced to.  Tiffin is too big for us now as we want to be mobile. PC still on list.  I could ignore my issues if the price is good. That way I get a great factory support and awesome PC owners to look forward too. The hunt continues....
