PC Plant

Thinking of visiting the PC factory early Sept and driving up from St. Louis, MO to spend the night at a campground near there and then the next day going to talk Cruiser. Thinking of either Potato Creek State Park or Elkhart Campground. Are there any others in that area that we should consider? We are more campers than RV people and then thusly more apt to prefer the state park over Elkhart Campground.
thanks
Jack is what we call our PC 2351D, and he has taken us from campers to RV'ers and loving it. We're no longer Team Bob. Just Jack the RV!

We've stayed at Shipshewana North and Twin Mills which are both east of Elkhart. Both were nice. Shipshewana North you can hear the highway AND the Amish buggies clip clopping past. They also have a custard stand on site that may or may not be open that late in the season. Coming from your direction, Potato Creek would be my pick. We stayed there and liked it a lot. We were restricted on spots as we wanted electric hook ups but if you are camping, you'll have many more options. It is a beautiful park with a human swim beach, doggie beach and swim area, boat rentals, trails and more. Lots of wildlife to watch and places to explore. We would definitely go back. It is a good distance from Elkhart.

Hello Garmp--I've stayed at both of the parks you mentioned.  Potato Creek State Park was lovely, but expensive with a daily use fee charged on top of the camping fee.  Elkhart Campground was really close to the PC factory, similar in price to Potato Creek.  I did like that they had great bathrooms and laundry facilities, making the price a little more bearable.  Still, it was no state park!  If you are looking for an economical option, the Elkhart County Fairgrounds in Goshen has water/electric sites, decent bathrooms, and interesting walking.  You just have to be sure they aren't hosting a big to-do during your visit and that there will be space.  Good luck!

I suggest calling to check on that daily use fee at Potato Creek. It has been several years but my recollection is that we paid it on the first day but got in free with our camping pass the days after that. You pay the fee at the park entrance then drive a good way to the campground where you register for your site. They charge the fee so people don't lie about being on the way to camp there. It's a big park with several different areas.

For our first time we were there we stayed at Eby's Pines campground.  Just down the road from the factory, kinda out in the country. There were only a few level sites. For the second second time we stayed at Shipshewana South. Most of the sites were level and very wide. It is very close to the Amish market and shopping. Lots of good places to eat. It took about 20 minutes to get to the factory but was well worth the drive. It allowed me to check out how the PC drove and handled. My wife listened for wind noise and any rattles that should not be there.

I would strongly suggest you camp where there are full hookups in order to check out all the features and functions of the new motorhome. Without full hookups, how will you know that the dump valves work? Open and close every door, drawer, roof vent, and all outside compartments. Turn on every light. Take an electric plug tester and plug it into every plug both while hooked up to shore power and when not hooked up, turn on the inverter and check the plugs in the wings, under the kitchen sink and the outside plug. If you get the jacks, make sure you put them down even if you don't need them. I drove three hours in a storm to Indianapolis before I camped and found out they forgot to put them on. I had to drive back the next day. Try the TV, DVD (take a DVD with you when you go to pick it up), the surround sound and if you get a satellite dish, that also. I know that is a lot to check out and may take more than one day. So I would suggest if you have the time to spend two nights at the campground. You can also tour the Amish stuff if you get done checking things out the first day.

Let us know how it goes and what you think of this life style. and most of all, have fun.

If you are just driving up to see PC. Not to checkout a new coach, you can stay for FREE in their level parking lot. They have free power cable to use also.
Call them and make sure there is room for you that night.
I've stayed there 3 different times, buying, repairing and trading in a motorhome.
