Sofa Bed Will Not Extend
« on: July 08, 2016, 06:06:28 pm »
Our sofa bed will not extend.  The switch is dead; nothing happens when we push the switch to extend the bed out.  Has anyone else had this problem?  I'm thinking of taking it to an RV repair shop (like a Camping World) to see if they can fix it.  I'm thinking that it is an electrical problem.  We could take it back to the PC factory, but would rather get it fixed locally if we can.  We have a 2015 2350 Sprinter.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

The first thing I would do is check the breaker and fuse.   If they check out good and you can wait until Monday,  I'd call PC for suggestions if no one here responds with the solution.

We had an electric sofa/bed in our previous motor home that could be operated manually if the switch failed.   Wish this one had that feature.

Thank you Gail.  We checked the breakers and fuses and they all appear to be working so we are kind of stumped.

I hope some of our knowledgeable forum members have some ideas for you to try over the weekend.   Kermit or someone in the factory service department should be able to offer help in resolving your problem.   I would call them before taking it to a repair center.

Check underneath the couch, behind the switch, to make sure the wires are plugged into the back of the switch......that's where mine was loose!

Thanks, Marcia.  We tried to look at the back of the switch, but that was not possible due to the way the sofa bed is configured, and it is not movable at this point.  I think if we could extend the bed out then we could see the back of the switch.

Will probably end up checking with the factory on Monday to see if they have any ideas.

Thanks again for your response.

Are you plugged to electric or running on the house batteries? Did you check the switch by the door? Do the 12 volt lights work?

The wires underneath were separated on ours. Take a look underneath and check the wiring.

Our couch has a three prong plug that must be plugged into an outlet that is located against the floor at the outside wall. On one occasion somehow the plug was dislodged from the outlet. We plugged it back in and all was well.

Many thanks to everyone for your help and recommendations.  However, I don't know how to check out "disconnected wires" or "three prong plugs being dislodged" because we cannot access underneath the sofa bed to check out the wiring or plugs.

On the fuse/breaker panel for our 2350. . . . does anyone know what number fuse would be associated with the sofa bed?  The handwriting that PC provided on the drop-down panel is so illegible on the fuse descriptions, it is very hard to tell what number fuse relates to our sofa bed.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

I suggest checking for any time of manual or documentation for the sofa bed in the massive packet Phoenix supplies. I don't think we have anything for ours but it's always possible there was something for yours. After that, I agree with a previous post that you should call the factory. They are unbelievably helpful and knowledgeable about all the different components of the Phoenix.

Dale and Cindy,

Since you don't know which fuse supports the sofa bed, I advise you check every fuse, one at a time.  Use a small pliers like this to remove each fuse and inspect it to see if it is blown (burnt and/or broken inside).

If the metal material inside the fuse is not broken, immediately place it back into the same exact socket.  Don't mix the various colors up.  Make sure the same amperage goes back into the same socket.

You are inspecting for a blown fuse as shown below.  A blown fuse should be replaced with another of the same amperage.  Fuses can be purchased at any automotive store and at places like Walmart in their automotive department.

If the new fuse of the same amperage (same number) burns again immediately, temporarily replace it with the next number larger.  You want to get the sofa open to inspect everything the other helpers here have mentioned.  If you find something suspicious and can resolve it, then replace the new higher amp fuse with the same number as the original.

Thanks to everyone for your great suggestions!  Ron, we did what you suggested and inspected every fuse and made sure none of the breakers were tripped.  All fuses were in good condition, so we did what everyone suggested, we called Kermit.

Kermit is the proverbial "answer man"!  He told us how to take off the upholstered panel on the front of the couch so that we could inspect the switch, the wiring, and motor.  Sure enough there was a yellow wire that had become disconnected from the splice near the motor.  That was the problem and I am very happy that we know how to fix it now!

Again, thanks to every one for your help and advice.  And, 2 Frazzled, I did check all of the owner's manuals but did not find any info for the tri-fold couch/sofa bed, which is odd because there seems to be papers on most every system in the coach.

Happy travels everyone.  In a few weeks we are headed to the Canadian Maritime Provinces and we don't plan on coming back to the Midwest until mid to late October.  We'll be joining a caravan (Adventure Caravans) for part of the trip.  Can't wait to get on the road again.

Happy to hear Kermit solved your problem and you are "good to go ".    Thanks for posting the fix and outcome.   No problem with ours but good to know how to get to the wiring and switch should we experience a malfunction.

Enjoy the caravan.

So Kermit told us that on the front upholstered panel of our tri-fold sofa bed there are two round decorative upholstered buttons.  Remove those buttons and there are screws underneath the buttons.  Once you unscrew the screws that are underneath the buttons, the front upholstered panel can be removed to facilitate inspection of wires underneath the sofa bed.  We never would have guessed that if we hadn't called Kermit.

Dale reconnected the wires and secured them with electrical tape and the sofa bed slides out perfectly now.  We don't use this couch as a bed too often, but we do bring our grand-kids along with us on some trips so we need this bed from time to time.
