Trojan versus NAPA AGM
« on: August 22, 2024, 04:51:47 pm »
I plan to switch from flooded to AGM batteries in our 3100. Phoenix Service told me they put in Trojans as an option and I have read several threads on the forum about AGM's. I prefer to deal local in our rural area and our NAPA dealer (my contact there is also an rv-er and retired military like me) is offering me a top of the line AGM for $300 each (I am getting a military discount). He also says this battery has a 36 month warranty although online says 12 months. Here is the online page:

https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/BAT9844

Anyone with Trojan AGM's care to comment on how this stacks up before I pull the trigger on two of the NAPA batteries? NAPA guy says the dimensions and weight (68lbs..ouch) are the same as their/my flooded GC2. Might need a young neighbor to help me.

Hank,
I wish I could speak for Trojan AGM's, but I have only had experience with their flooded batteries as I have used them for years in golf carts and our aerial lift.  I know my question to you is slightly off topic here, but will you have to change any settings on your charger in your PC to switch to AGM's from flooded batteries.  We are still running the original batteries that came in our PC, but we know the day will come when we have to replace them and I have wondered if I would have to change any settings on the charger if we go with AGM's.
The NAPA batteries you are considering sound to be quite bullet proof, but I agree their website is confusing in regards to the warranty.  One place it says free replacement for 3 years and in another it says 12 months.  Please update this thread with your final decision.

We bought a pair of Duracell 6V AGM batteries from Sam's Club back in 2015, which are still in service today.  We just returned from a trip around Lake Michigan and they continue to perform well.  Unfortunately, it appears the 6V AGM is no longer offered, but the 12V versions may still be.

Gary - I called Phoenix Service and Keith told me there is nothing to change on my 2019 if I change to AGM batteries from flooded. I see on other previous threads there was talk of needing to do something, perhaps in prior-year units. It appears Phoenix sorted that out.

For those of you with older PCs......2006 to ~2014.

The inverter/converter combination unit in the earlier PCs is similar or identical to this one.

Phoenix introduced the whole house inverter concept with the Tripp-Lite and 2 batteries as an option mid-year 2006.  It became standard beginning in 2007.  The whole house inverter was the primary reason for adding the second house battery.  There is a simple procedure changing the Tripp-Lite from wet acid, to AGM.  The Tripp-Lite in our 2007 cannot handle Lithium.  Maybe the newer ones can.

For reasons unknown to me, Phoenix changed to separate inverter and converter units around model year 2014 give or take a year or two.  From what I recall reading posts on this forum, there were initially some issues of which Phoenix quickly resolved.  I believe the ultimate solution was changing brands of converters and/or inverters.  To be honest, I didn't pay close attention to the subject matter when it came up.

Hank,
Thank you for the information that Phoenix supplied you regarding switching to AGM's from flooded batteries.

I just found out NAPA offers only one year warranty (replacement) on both flooded GC2 and AGM batteries.Wow - the last time I replaced either car or RV batteries they had a several year warranty. MY NAPA guy says prorated warranties are a thing of the past. He claims his 5 year old flooded batteries are going strong. I do see an Interstate Class 27 AGM with 3 year warranty. But aren't the PC batteries a Class 24? That Interstate Class 24 has a 2 year warranty. Besides the GC2-ECL-UTL (big and heavy), Interstate has an "EFB" (Enhanced Flooded Battery) which is smaller and lighter. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks!
