Changing Oil
« on: May 19, 2011, 04:55:57 pm »
I am wondering if there is a Sprinter PC owner out there who has put synthetic oil in their rv.  ???

Also, where do you folks go to get the oil changed....Camping World?  Jiffy Lube?  Other?
Am checking prices...and to see if they can "do" this vehicle....tall and 24 ft. long.

(Our previous rv was 38 ft. long and a diesel pusher that had fewer options for service places.)

Just wondering if anyone has used a place like Jiffy Lube where they have a "pit" for the workers and tall bays.

One more:   What about changing the oil in a LP generator?   Same place?  Kind of oil?    How often?

Thanks a lot.
 :)

We traded in our 2350 Sprinter for the 2551 in February. We had the oil changed on the Sprinter by a Dodge dealer. A Mercedes dealer will change it as well.  The owners manual should tell you what grade of synthetic to use-there are different grades of synthetic. The Dodge dealer had the oil that met the requirements.

Another avenue of information is the Sprinter-Source Forum. We found much useful info on the Sprinter from that Forum.

As far as we know, Jiffy Lube does not carry the grade of oil that Mercedes reccomends. Better to stay with the Dodge or Mercedes dealer.

I had a 3.0 L M-B Sprinter and changed the oil myself.  The engine takes approx. 11 quarts of oil.  You must use oil that meets M-B 229-51, either 5-30 or 5-40.  The oil must be low ash and there are only a few  oils that meet this requirement.  Mobil does in their Mobil 1 5-30 ESP, or Pento Super Performance III (made in Germany).  Expect to pay $10.00 per quart and you can only get such oil thru a Dodge or M-B dealer or thur a few  outlets on the web like Euro Oils.  The engine takes a paper filter Mopar #1-05175571AA (has the M-B logo all of it) and it will set you back $34.00.  M-B sells the same filter for 1/2  that and Wix does have basically the same filter for approx. $15.00.  Do not let Jiffy Lube or anyone tell you any other Mobil 1 oil will work.... none  will, it must have the ESP designation and M-B has a lock on who can sell this oil....just them for the most part!  Take it to a dealer if you do not want to do it yourself, other than being real dirty oil it is extremely easy to change the oil since the drain plug is right behind the radiiator and can be easily reached from the front and the filter can easly be reached from the top.  Sprinters are not cheap to maintain despite the fact the oil change inervals are greater than the Ford.   Good luck

Thanks so much for the oil advice!
Voices of experience are much appreciated.
Guess I will drive a little farther and find that Dodge dealer.
