DISH Network with Winegard RoadTrip P4 Dome

  We have a Winegard Road Trip P4 in-motion dome on our 2019 PC 3100. Thinking about getting DISH for some longer trips this year. I read some informative posts from Mike and Don from 2019 on the subject. Don posted a link to hardware which today took me to a Wally Receiver/DVR Expansion bundle for $168.  Any current thoughts on needing anything besides the boxes to connect up? Have not checked subscription prices yet.

  We have Direct TV in the house but seems better to have a dedicated (and HD) option in the PC..??

For less than $30 and no additional subscription plan you could connect a Roku streaming device to tv’s hdmi port and put  the Dish streaming app on your iPhone to screencast Dish TV to the Roku.

Let me update my earlier comment (I presume I am the "Don" you mentioned). I love Dish when stopped.  All you need to do is try to get a spot that isn't obstructed to the west-south-west.  It's great.  You (I) have to run what Dish calls a test installation the first time you setup the Wally in your RV.  I take the 2nd Wally from an upstairs room to put into my RV and at the end of the trip, put it back in the upstairs room.   That's because the 2 antennas are different.  It takes about 5 minutes to run the test.  My RV antenna is a winegard RT 4000 which is an in motion antenna.   From the few times I have had a rider in the RV where I tried to use the in motion feature... It's not worth it because of the constant "searching" for the satellite easily gets through the roof as a very annoying noise.  Also, depending on where you are driving (mountains, plains, city, etc.) the signal will drop out.  When parked, you have to put up with the noise for only 5 minutes.   That is the bad news.


The good news is the 2nd receiver for me is only $5/month.  I don't get local channels either in the house or on the road.  I use a regular TV antenna for that (like the RV's rooftop antenna.  That way, I never have to call Dish to change my location.  I get all subscribed channels on both Wallys and both have a USB hard drive connected so can act as a DVR.

The Wally CAN watch one channel and record a 2nd channel; however, the Road Trip can only receive 1 satellite at a time so if you want to watch 1 channel and record a 2nd channel, they both have to be on the same satellite.  That's not an issue at home as my rooftop Dish antenna can get all 3 satellites at once.

I am very happy with my setup. I keep both Wallys "active" all the time so no need to suspend/activate the RV/Upstairs unit but Dish does allow it if you wish.  To me, it's well worth my total bill of $73/month.

That presumes you have fast internet where you are.

CalCruiser - Thanks for the suggestion for streaming. But we actually like the option of recording for later playback although that comes at a cost.. We were recently watching "live" TV for a couple weeks away from home and the commercials and other breaks were really distracting.

Don - In the 2019 thread (which I cannot seem to locate right now)  I recall a discussion about using a Direct TV receiver (I have a 2017 Genie) with a couple adjustments. I also recall it would only be SD, no HD but the picture was actually pretty good. And that, even though the SWM was required, the receiver worked anyway. Finally, I just found a DTV page that says the Genie will not work with the Road Trip. I remember a mention of using an older HR24 (I used to have that in another RV). If that was your post (or whoever) I might try one of my DTV receivers in the PC if I can get the setup right. The PC is fully hooked up next to our house. Any thoughts? I can also call Direct TV tech support (right..). They might help since I am a very-long-time customer (both home and previous RV).

In the end, it may be easier just to spend a few extra bucks and get full DISH capability.

As Don said in his first post--I think I am the "Mike" you mentioned in your original post, and the information you recall regarding the Direct TV use in the RV were mine.  Actually--here is a link to that thread that you said you couldn't locate--it will take you to my 2019 post, but you can access the whole thread from there:  https://forum.phoenixusarv.com/index.php?topic=3845.msg33380#msg33380

YES--I had ordered my 2019 2552 with the Winegard RoadTrip dome with the automatic satellite location but not the more expensive "in-motion" option, since I would be traveling alone most of the time.  When I finally got around to setting it up several months later, I remember researching options to do that, and ended up using information from Winegard as my primary guide.  I, too, had been a long-time Direct TV user in my home--so wanted to go with that if possible since I was familiar with the system.  Following Winegard's recommendation, I ordered a separate receiver from them--it was the Direct TV HR-24 unit, though it seems now that they may have mentioned a couple of options, and by now another model may be a better recommendation.  In any case, the HR-24 was $200 up front (from Winegard), plus a $7 ongoing monthly charge on my Direct TV bill.  I don't remember the in's and out's on the SWM guidance, but my 2019 post DOES mention that the SWM possibly should be used with that particular antenna--HOWEVER I definitely am NOT using SWM in my RV installation--just the regular power adapter to the receiver, and everything works great.  My home Genie system can display/record five simultaneous programs; I don't remember how many the HR-24 can support, but I have never had need to record more than one while watching something else.

I had actually forgotten that bit about no HD on that setup, and if you had asked me today if I get HD in my RV I would have told you YES--the picture on that 32-inch Samsung is that good.  However, I definitely see looking back at my 2019 message that I confirmed that the setup does not provide HD.  I see a BIG difference on my home TV's between SD and HD, so because I just don't remember any disappointment or concerns with the picture in my RV, I'm almost tempted to go to the RV and try to fire the system up to confirm that it's not HD.  I usually readily notice that stuff, and I have been perfectly happy with the quality of that picture.  Just thought I'd update this discussion with what I can offer currently.

Hank/Don,

Don, your information may shed some light on the "HD or No HD" issue.

I just double checked and see that on my DirectTV feed, virtually all the usable signal strength comes from satellite transponders on the 101 (32 transponders) and 119 (11 transponders) degree satellites.  We're pulling zeros from the 3 transponders at 110 degrees, and there are NO KA-band units at 99 or 103 degrees--only 96 more transponders on CA, CB and S bands on those satellites--all of which have more depressed signal strength.

It just may be that there IS in fact HD capability on most of those transponders, and somehow the fact that it's not on 110 or the KA band of 99 and 103 got misunderstood as applying to everything.  That is much more in line with what I've seen on my RV TV---I KNOW that picture had to be HD!

 I hooked up the small "secondary" Direct TV receiver from our spare bedroom (CK something or other) to determine what satellite is already set up since we have not used it after the previous owner. The dome recognized it, even tried to do a setup,  but soon the yellow network light on the front started flashing. I rebooted several times and got same result. May because it is now separated from the main genie in the living room and can't connect with it?  Maybe only the main genie works?

  So, even though it will not do the setup, it appears the dome is set for Direct TV. If not, I will have to wait until we get further south next week to reset the dip switches on the roof dome..not safe right now. I would be happy to just have the DTV receiver for now instead of hundreds of dollars for a Dish receiver and subscription.

  So I called DTV Tech support just now and they wanted to do what was mentioned here earlier - sell me an older model H24 or whatever DVR/Receiver for $105 plus tax and a $7 per month charge. We are headed to Arizona for possibly a couple months to help family so I might do it down there.

Hank, it sounds like the receiver you used from your bedroom is a "client" receiver--and you're exactly right.  Those have to connect with the main genie to function--although they take a coax connection, they can't decode signals on their own.  The HR-24 is likely your least expensive option to get up and running.  According to the literature I received with my dome--the dip switches were set from the factory for DirecTV, and would need to be reset for Dish.  It would be helpful to know what the previous owner used, but I'm sure you can sort it out.
For what it's worth, I'm now fairly confident that the high-definition question has been misunderstood--for DirecTV, I believe it is just some transponders on certain satellites or bands on satellites that won't provide HD.

  Thanks. I will post later if this all works out. Packing the RV to leave in the snow and cold for not-as-cold Arizona for a while. But not really a vacation since it is a family issues thing. But we know the area well (Apache Juncyion) having spent 14 years down there as RV snowbirds from 2003-2017 in our previous diesel pusher. We were just down there 3 weeks ago in the car. This time we have our house with us..way better.

This is the correct DirectTV solution. It is what we have and it works just fine except you have standard definition, not high DEF.
