Garmin 1090 Mount
« on: January 04, 2023, 09:27:28 pm »
A while back someone posted that they used the ProClip center dash mount extra strength to mount the Garmin 1090.  They stated that they also used a 25mm ball socket to AMPS connection adapter and an adapter plate.  I just ordered the 1090 but haven’t received it yet but in looking at dash mounts I saw that the 1090 has a 22mm socket, not a 25mm.  Does anyone know if is actually has a 22mm socket or was it incorrect information.  Maybe Garmin made a change????

Any help/comments would be appreciated.  I have gotten so much good information on this forum.

Hi Sharon,

I think that was probably one of my postings on my Garmin 1090 that you are referring to--I've made 3 or 4 postings on the unit since I got that model Garmin.

YES!  The 1090 as received comes with the smaller 22mm ball socket mounted on the power base that fastens to a 22mm ball suction-cup type mount which sticks on the windshield.  I didn't want to use a suction cup or windshield mount--I already had the heavy-duty ProClip center dash mount installed and wanted to use that since the mounting position is perfect for that big 10-inch screen, and screwing the mount to that 4-screw AMPS mount is MUCH more solid and permanent than using the suction cup.

I don't know if the 22mm is a proprietary size, but I couldn't find a ball anywhere in that smaller size that had the standard 4-screw AMPS pattern that would bolt to my ProClip dash mount.  The larger 25mm (1-inch) is a standard size, with lots of mounts available, but 22mm doesn't seem to be.  Fortunately, however, Garmin also uses the 4-screw AMPS pattern to mount their 22mm ball socket on the back of the power base of the 1090.  The solution was as simple as buying a 25mm ball socket with the AMPS pattern to mount to the ProClip mount, and buying a 25mm ball with the AMPS pattern to mount to the Garmin power base and replace their 22mm stuff.  The fact that they used the AMPS pattern on the power base gives you an easy way to make the switch.

You've probably already seen these, but here are links to a couple of message strings that include some links to the required socket and ball needed to make the mounting (take a look at the entire message string):

Hi Mike!

It was you that made the post that I had been looking at and I thank you for responding so quickly on this.  I loved your set up and wanted to do the same once I received my 1090 but was afraid that Garmin had made a change since you purchased yours.  I am definitely going to do the same set up that you posted now that you have put my question to rest.  Thank you so much!  Have a great day!!!

I have the Garmin RV 785  GPS with Road Camera.  The Ball Mount is 17mm.

I would like to find a compatible connection to raise the level of the GPS.  The straight Ball Mount results in the camera position barely skimming the top of the Dash.

Taildragger,

I'm not sure how or where you currently have your RV 785 mounted, but I assume it's by using the standard fixed Garmin suction cup mount that is furnished with the unit?
If so, perhaps something from the iBolt 17mm adapter line might help give you more flexibility:  https://iboltmounts.com/all-mounts/components/17mm-ball-adapters-andmount?gclid=CjwKCAiAuOieBhAIEiwAgjCvci1quhqqJNlKH8N0xLJDfYkZSqhLdRjB6a4B-CBHqpk2VSXNk_b-lhoC9lAQAvD_BwE
Looks like most of their stuff uses a 17mm to 25mm ball to ball adapter to bring the Garmin to 25mm, then mounts using various 25mm connections and mountings.  You can also buy the 17mm to 25mm ball to ball adapter individually at iBolt or on Amazon, and then work on your own with the variety of 25mm stuff available that will vary your mount length, etc.
As noted in my below reply to Sharon, one way of building from an extremely solid mounting position is by use of the Heavy Duty ProClip Center Dash Mount, which screws to the Ford dash and provides the 4-screw AMPS Pattern base--it's a lot more solid and permanent than a suction cup mount to work from.

All I know about alternative ways to mount a GPS is what I am learning by following this Forum.  Good ideas!  Applying them is the challenge.

Changing from a windshield mounted suction cup to using the HD ProClip Center Dash Mount, that you feature, has me convinced of it being the preferred method.  Struggling for an alternative to the direct connection has me puzzled.  In order to lift the GPS mounted road camera for a better perspective on traffic, I need to find an extension with a right-angle bend included.   I think I need a rigid adapter, rather than a flexible gooseneck to accomplish the desired outcome.

I not only want to raise the highway camera, I want to improvise a system that clamps and holds the selected position while underway. Suggestions are appreciated

You are so right Mike.  I followed your instructions and set it up without a problem. I have to say that my husband is so impressed with this set up and how sturdy it is.  My husband thinks that it’s amusing that I am always spending time on this forum.  Now he knows how beneficial it is to be on it because we never would have thought to do this to set up our Garmin 1090.  So thank you for all of your postings with your knowledge.

This should work.  Looks like the clamps are sturdy.

Sharon--glad that worked out in your rig!  I think it's a good setup!

Taildragger--YES.  If you use the HD ProClip Center Dash Mount, that will give you the solid 4-screw AMPS pattern mount on the front of your dash.  That particular iBolt mount should then fasten right to it.  The combination of the two swivel balls should let you position your RV 785 however you want.  The clamp arm is 3.75 inches long--which will certainly get your camera high enough I think.  One thing you can experience with a longer mounting arm is to pick up a little vibration at your GPS; that's why using the most solid mounting arrangement is important.

Problem solved!  Appreciate the inside information.  Couldn't find it on my own.
