Rusty Transmission dipstick tube

Rusty Transmission dipstick tube

So before I left on my trip for the 4th of July weekend, one of the things I checked was my Transmission fluid. When I pulled out the dipstick I found the end was covered in rusty flakes... little more clunky than a normal flake. After doing some research it sounds like this is common  for the E350 and E450 models. On the inside of this long dipstick tube they will build up rust. Just curious if anyone else has came across this issue. I'm sure it doesn't do the transmission any good to push these rusty chunks into the fluid.

According to factory recommendations, vehicles will need their auto transmission fluid changed about every 25,000 miles, though some will specify a longer interval. Driving conditions may also require more frequent changing. 

Checking the fluid regularly will usually show if there has been substantial fluid degradation.  I purchased my PC used.  With thirteen years since new and ten thousand miles, I had the transmission fluid drained, new filters (internal and secondary) replaced.  I check regularly during periods of use.  Fluid looks clear and uncontaminated.

I have never had rust in the tube and if I did I’d have it cleaned up and flushed.  Just my 2bits.
I take mine in every roughly 30,000 miles and have a hot flush completed.  Costs $200 at ford dealer here, maybe less elsewhere.  I changed out rear differential on a schedule as well (this I do myself).  I won’t argue if it’s needed or not because I use swag as my guide which isn’t exactly scientific. I also change out my antifreeze every few years.  I had to replace a radiator once for not paying attention. Don’t plan on doing it again.

For my oil I ran a lab test at 6,000 miles to see where I stood. From that I knew how much longer I could run if needed or if I should be changing earlier.

I change the transmission fluid, rear end oil, brake fluid per Ford at 30,000 and the oil every 5K. Had the transmission and rear end serviced at Gator Ford in Tampa, they have one of the largest commercial vehicle service centers I believe its 65 service bays. Really nice place.
