Mothership & maintenance
« on: June 17, 2022, 04:50:53 pm »
For maintenance on your rig, including liquid springs, HWI Levelers, generator, everything else, have you had the mothership do this or where do you go for what? We'd like to schedule an appointment, have it all done, plus a few other things that need Doug's touch.I understand they are booked till Dec, but I can wait to have it all done right, so its ready for next season.
Your thoughts?

For Liquid Springs, I would go directly to their factory in Lafayette Indiana.  They have a service bay and can lift the whole Phoenix Cruiser up for a complete inspection of the Liquid Springs system.  They also have all the replacement parts in stock if needed.  We were in and out in just a couple of hours and even received a factory tour.

That’s only practical if your close. Ridiculous for say someone in Ca or Texas to spend $2500 on fuel for a service check.  The question would be where are liquid spring authorized service facilities around the US? If none, it’s do it yourself or a crap shoot like everything else.

In my experience factory-level service is an excellent way to go for repairs (especially) or for maintenance needs if (as Joseph says) access can be made to work.  Some time ago, I posted about my experience of stopping at HWH's Moscow, Iowa factory for repairs on my HWH Automatic Leveler System:  https://forum.phoenixusarv.com/index.php?topic=4596.msg41017#msg41017

As with JJ Cruiser's experience with Liquid Springs, I found the HWH factory quick and easy to get into, very capable and well equipped, and even a bargain cost-wise to boot.  Later, when I was deciding who to trust with some serious slide-out repair, I decided that it was worth a trip to Phoenix at Elkhart to again get factory-level capability.  Phoenix is not inexpensive, but they have the parts and the expertise, and you can expect competent service that resolves the problem.  Unfortunately Phoenix is not geared for high volume service through-put, and unlike HWH and Liquid Springs which focus on their own limited set of coach components, they are on the hook for the whole thing, which is logistically more difficult.

For common maintenance, I have trusted myself all my life--even though age makes what used to be quick and easy now more slow and difficult.  But a generator oil and air filter change is still a very simple 30-minute-max job that almost anyone can do--so almost any mechanical source can handle that type stuff reliably.

Has anyone had service work done at a Camping World Super Center? Their rv techs  should be able to handle all the standard  rv stuff like air conditioners, furnaces, refrigerators, water heaters, converters, inverters, roof vents, awnings, valves, maceraters, leveling jacks, back up cameras, etc. They probably have better parts availability  than the  indie rv service guys and even some rv dealerships. If their parts and labor warranty is  honored at all CW Super Center locations that would be nice to have.

We will NEVER use Camping World again. They claimed  Atwood denied our warranty repair and wanted us to sign that we would pay without warranty coverage. They never contacted Atwood. They had to order what should have been a stock part. We waited three days in freezing weather with no furnace (bought extra space heater) for a part we discovered was less than an hour away (we would have driven up to get it). Another conversation with Atwood to discover it's the wrong part for our unit. Gave up and headed to warm. Tried a repair shop in the south who couldn't reproduce the problem so no fix. Finally back to Phoenix USA for success. It was a pinhole in the the igniter which was a known issue with Atwood furnaces.

Call Liquid Springs for a list of authorized installers. There might be one close to you. All other repairs on my unit have been done at the factory and I've been very pleased with results.

We are hoping to have some other work done and wanting to make it a one stop thing. Do our repairs and add ons and have the maintenance done in one fell swoop. And yes, Liquid Spring has a dealer a lot closer to us than Elkhart.

Finally back to Phoenix USA for success. It was a pinhole in the the igniter which was a known issue with Atwood furnaces.

We bought our first RV from K&C RV in Colorado... They had a Camping World store and Service Department there.  Now it's all branded as Camping World.

It was a brand new Winnebago Minnie that we brought.  Being in Colorado, it doesn't rain much so we didn't notice a leak by the front window of the Cabover bed.  We made an appointment with the shop for evaluation and repair.  It was a week it two out.  Brought it in on the appointment day.   They said they were busy but would get it in as soon as they could.  6 WEEKS LATER, after bugging them what was up, we drove over there and discovered our RV was still parked Outside where we had parked when we dropped it off.  I got ahold of the shop manager and he agreed to get it in for an evaluation that day.

We got the evaluation that day, leaking caulk around the window and by the back of the front cap.  I asked them to fix it and they asked for proof that I had the caulking checked and redone after we owned the unit for 6 months.  The RV was about 9 months old at this point.  He pointed out in the Winnebago manual says that leaks were not covered unless we had the Seals checked and repaired every 6 months!   I called Winnebago and they verified that.  So, I agreed to pay to have it resealed.

A week or two later, and about $1,000 lighter, we got it back. A couple of months later, we took a trip to Illinois and overnight were hit with thunderstorms.  Literally water was pouring in from around that cab front window.   Service folks looked at it and decided it was coming in from the cab marker lights.  They caulked (no charge) them.  A few months later, the fiberglass on the side of the Cabover started rippling.   They claimed water damage from that first leak and not covered because of the no check at 6 months.

That was the last time I took it to Camping World.  Never Again!

I fixed the rippling fiberglass myself, it was the plywood underneath delaminating.  The original caulking wasn't installed properly, it was mostly missing.    Last Winnebago I ever bought too.  It took another year or two for an RV body shop to finally get all the leaking stopped.

Never Again will we get shop work done at Camping World!

I am having slide-out issues again on my 2020 year model 2351. It does not go out or come in straight and drive gear is eating into tract. Is there an alternative to the factory for a fix. I spoke to VROOM factory but no openings for at least a year. Would the Lippert factory be worth a call?

To be honest, I would suggest Phoenix.

This is also my story.  So far, I had other people touch our PC twice in 15 years.  The first time was the initial suspension upgrades done back in 2007 when our PC was new.  The second time was a wheel alignment last year.  But like you, I am feeling my age doing everything else.

Oh....there was that third time during our trip last year.  We had a mechanical failure in the middle of nowhere Wyoming that required towing and the replacement of the fuel pump driver module.

Regarding Camping World.  From all I read, bring a big wallet and also plan on a return trip to get a few things done right the second time.  At least it will get done.

I looked through the Liquid Springs maintenance list and thought it didn't look to bad till I came to torquing the upper bolts  to 600 ft/lbs.
Don't know if I could lift the wrench for that one!  roflol

(will probably just make sure they are still tight)

Regarding Camping World, I have a question.   Has anyone ever heard a GOOD story about their service?   Surely some folks have had positive experiences but I personally have never encountered one of those people.   Of course, it didn't always have the current corporate structure and it may have been a very different company back before it was rolled up.

There is a very large Camping World location less than ten minutes from my home and I doubt if I have been in it more than three times in my life.   Once, it was to buy something I didn't have time to order before a trip and once to look at a used motorhome.   Let's just say I was far, far less than impressed with the way they approached the potential motorhome sale.   A couple of months later I bought a similar unit  three hundred miles away.
