Foggy backup camera
« on: May 24, 2022, 11:46:57 am »
On our last trip we noticed our 2351D backup camera is foggy. Like condensation has gotten inside between the lens & outer housing. After a while on the road it clears up a bit, but still not it's normal self. Any hints for a non-mechanical sort looking for an easy fix that won't break the bank.
Thanks in advance.

On your trip where you noticed the foggy camera display, were you in rain, fog, high humidity quite a bit?   Maybe a little moisture seeped into the camera?

I have never experienced the condition you are having but if I did, I would let that camera take a good baking on a bright, hot dry day or two or three and see if it cleared up.   If it did, I would tighten every screw on the camera and I might even be tempted to clean it good with Isopropyl alcohol and put a thin coating of a clear, high quality silicon around every joint, nook and cranny.  Especially where the cable intrudes into the camera.

Just some thoughts of a simple solution that costs nothing to try.   Others on this forum probably have better ideas and may have experienced the same problem.

I had this same problem on my last trip.  I'm curious to see what solutions other people have come up with.

My solution was to replace the camera and monitor. I had a 2013 3100 and the Sony replacement camera was no longer available.

I went to a Halovision wireless 4 camera system.

Try holding a hair dryer set to medium at arms length from the camera. Wave the hair dryer back and forth and don’t let the camera get too hot to touch. While you are doing this have someone else watch the  monitor so you don’t overdo  it.

Thanks Cal C. That sounds like a solution even I could do. If it doesn't rain tomorrow, I'll try that. If not it'll have to wait until we retrieve it from storage and our next outing in June.
Thanks again, appreciate it.

I can say "ditto" to DONEWORKING's advice to clean it and reseal with silicon lube. I used silicon lube for pool equipment (similar to Vaseline). I did mine 2 years ago when the camera was 10yrs old. I got a lot of dust and fumes(?) off the inside of the camera when I cleaned it,,, not just humidity. Find a warm dry day to do this as it helps eliminate moisture inside the camera. Why not do it in the AC you might ask? I did the entire cleaning on the roof so no wires to disconnect.

When done I was shocked how much better the view was on the monitor. Before, it was gray and blurry in daylight and very foggy/worthless at night... After, it is crisp and colorful. Still is 2 years later.

Also be sure that the ring around the lens touches the glass when you reassemble it. If it doesn't then light from the IR blasters will leak in and totally white wash the night vision. I didn't have that problem on my PC camera... But I learned that lesson on a home outdoor surveillance camera. So, always good to check that.

Hey Larry
Great advice, my camera isn't foggy but it isn't very clear either. I think I will follow your advice and pull it apart.

Thanks
Very Respectfully

About 5 weeks ago I started noticing moisture(condensation) inside the backup camera.  At first it would dry out and work ok during the day but then moisture stayed in it all the time.  I took a storage bag full of rice and tied it around the camera for a day.  Didn't seem to help.  I finally decided to replace the camera.  After removing and installing the new camera, I took the old one apart and let it dry out and replaced the cover.  I've left it out in the weather for over a week now and no visible moisture inside the lens.  Also, I will note that the camera had a 2018 date on it.  Don't know if that matters or not.
