New Ford E450 Chassis with Garmin RV Vieo 1051 Radio
« on: February 06, 2022, 07:50:55 am »
Anyone have a closeup picture of the new Ford E450 (2021 and later with 7.3L V8) with a 10" Garmin RV Vieo 1051 radio?  I'm considering the purchase of a used 2021 PC2552 built on the new Ford E450 chassis.  It appears to have been built before Phoenix started installing the new Garmin RV Vieo 1051 and it has the stock Ford radio with no display screen.  The dash also appears to be a single DIN slot, so options for a replacement radio are limited.

Apparently, new orders from Phoenix come with the Garmin RV Vieo 1051 radio which is a dock system and 10" removable display/tablet.  When looking at Garmin's specs for the Vieo dock, it appears to be a double DIN unit.  I'm curious what Phoenix has done to modify the dash to accommodate a double DIN radio/dock.

I've attached a picture of the stock E450 radio/dash (2023 E450 Cutaway chassis).

Here are a couple pics that the PC sent me.  I'm scheduled to have this unit installed in my 2021 2552 later this month.  My dash currently looks just like your pic.  I know nothing about DINS.

Thank you very much!  It looks like they replace the entire front of the dash with a custom piece, that allows for a double DIN radio.

If you don't mind me asking, is the factory going to install the new Garmin Vieo for you, or are you having it done at a PC dealer?

So far, I can't find anyone, including Crutchfield, that has a dash kit that will allow installing a double DIN radio in the new E450.  DIN just refers to the slot where the radio is mounted.  The stock E450 radio is considered a single DIN.  The Garmin Vieo (and most full featured modern radios) requires a double DIN slot, which is twice as tall as the single DIN stock radio.

I am scheduled for this install at the factory in Elkhart later this month.  Made the appointment about 3 months ago.  Sorry for the low resolution to the pics.  I had to take a picture of the original picture so it could be resized to attach into the forum.

Is it possible that the little storage cubbie under the radio is removable with the radio to create a double din size.

I haven't seen the dash in person yet, but from the photos, it does not appear removable.  I think a very skilled installer could probably cut the divider between the radio and the cubbie, but the installer would then have to make a custom trim piece since the cubbie is wider than the DIN slot where the radio is installed.  I've searched as best I can, and I haven't found a single retailer that has a dash kit, allowing for a double DIN radio, in the new E350/E450 chassis.

It looks like both PC and Coach House, have designed an entire dash replacement to allow for a double DIN radio.  They are both using the Garmin Vieo dock/tablet, which doesn't even seem to be available for retail purchase, oem only.  Although the Vieo might be a nice unit, with the abiility to control Garmin's proprietary multiplex system (perhaps PC is headed that way), it does not appear to be as nice or capable as higher end radios, like the Kenwood eXcelon unit I currently have installed in my PC 2350.

I did a quick search on "2022 E450 dash board" and found this picture.  It is from a company selling brand new commuter busses for hotels and such.  This is a 2022 E450 dash board.  It has me thinking the pictures posted higher-up are of something previously customized with extra large over-lapping escutcheon plates (trim plates).  I pulled this picture from THIS WEBSITE.  I feel the installation will go cleanly without hacking up your dashboard.

For those of you who don't understand the term "DIN".  It is an acronym, a German term (Deutsches Institut für Normung) a world-wide automotive radio dimensional standard.  DIN to DoubleDIN will have the same width.  Only the height varies.  DIN is a small car radio commonly found in older vehicles.  The picture of the 2022 E450 shows a DIN sized radio with trim and a storage compartment utilizing the larger hole.

1.5DIN units were popular for a while to make the radio fancier, accommodating more impressive controls like this.

DoubleDIN radios were introduced in-part to accommodate large bodied multi-CD radios.  As of late, most vehicles have a DoubleDIN sized radio to accommodate large display screens.

Sorry if this is way more information than you care to know.

I did a quick search on "2022 E450 dash board" and found this picture.

That does not look at all like the new 2021 and newer Ford E450 cutaway chassis used by oem RV manufacturers.     That looks like a pre-2021 chassis.  The biggest giveaway to me is the steering wheel.  Every picture and piece of literature I can find on the newer chassis has a different designed steering wheel and newer instrument cluster, and the dash looks like the one I posted.

Good info - I should have thought of looking at the Garmin Vieo manual.  Under the E350/E450 section, I found this.. "You can use the hardware to flush mount the device in the single DIN panel with dashboard modifications."

It looks like PC does the "dashboard modifications" by replacing the entire fascia for the front of the dash.  I dug around on the Ford parts website, to the best of my ability, and it does not appear you can just replace the front part of the dash surrounding the radio and middle vents.  The only replacement part I found is for the entire piece that wraps around the instrument cluster.

How to remove  the bezel and radio:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S5PRt-76h-4

The 09-14 bezel appears to be similar to the 2021. Ford forgot all about the KISS principle. A Dremel  tool or coping saw should do the trick.

Good point.  I wonder what they are selling on that website.

I know Coach House just modifies the dash to accommodate the garmin unit. I assume PC does the same thing. The trim piece you’re looking at on the front of the dash pops off. Probably not a big deal to modify it.

I have pulled the Ford radio and replaced on my prior RV.  Yes, the "compartment" under or over the radio faceplate comes out relatively easy.  On that RV, I had to pop the whole dash panel out.  2 screws over the instrument panel and push-in clips that pop easily.  I just had someone hold the dash panel out of the way while slid the radio out enough to pull the plugs & antenna out.  Put the new radio adapters to factory harness on, plugged all in and slid the new radio in.  It was a 1.5 DIN radio.  Fit perfectly and it's new faceplate looked "factory" installed.

Maybe 1/2 hr to 45 minutes for the whole job.

On the 22 stock radio in the picture, I will bet dollars to doughnuts that compartment will come out with the radio giving you room for the Garmin

Hi everyone!
I happened to see this thread and thought I would jump in... yes, there are a handful of Phoenix Cruisers that were produced prior to us having the ability to install the Garmin and it make sure that it effectively works with our upgraded steering wheel controls. We worked with Garmin over several months to get to the point in which we can install it in production. We do have to modify the dash and there are special brackets and connectors needed to install the components. At this time, we do it at the plant in production and in our service department. However, it can not be done at a dealership currently. That could change if we (along with Garmin) can develop an "install" kit that would provide the dealer all of the items and instructions needed to do an effective install.

Replacement radios etc can be easy in general... the tricky part here is how this system works with the steering controls. That is not yet a plug and play situation. If we get to a point that a kit is available, I will definitely post and let everyone know.

safe travels!!
