Residency state for full timers
« on: September 01, 2021, 02:09:20 pm »
How to pick the best state. What are the factors to consider?

Health insurance (at least until I hit 65)
Taxes; income (investments, retirement savings, social security, etc)
Taxes: property (since we'll eventually settle somewhere)
Taxes: sales - don't buy much
Transfer and licensing fees for rig and car
Insurance for rig and car
Property tax (if we buy property - someday)
Jury duty (some states let you declare full time travel)
??? What am I missing?

We love the Pacific Northwest so think we'd buy there when the time comes. Do Washington or Oregon make sense or should I "move" to one of the big three: South Dakota, Texas, Florida?

Thoughts?

I inherited undeveloped land in Alaska but we no longer own a home except our PC so the residency/domicile issue shouldn't come into play with Maryland. We have a shared storage unit there that we'll probably move west. John is concerned we Co-own the rig and car and might live in two separate states. I don't think that's an issue.
