Bilstein Shocks
« on: August 25, 2021, 10:16:56 am »
I have a 2010  2551  27Ft  PC and when it hits ruts in the road the whole chassis shades and was wondering if replacing the shocks  will this give a better ride?   On the highway, it rides perfect until it finds rough roads.
Is it because it being a "C" class motor home that it is a rough ride compared to a "A" class RV??  Any Suggestions

If you mean the bang and shudder sounds then yes you need new rear shocks. They are probably shot if still in service  for >40k miles. The Ford factory original Motorcraft shocks were black, in case the service records are missing. You can’t go wrong with Bilstein HD’s f & r.

You are driving a "truck" not a "bus" like many Class A motorhomes, especially diesel pushers.

No idea what Phoenix did in 2003, but my 2015 2551 rides rough on badly maintained roads.  That's since day 1, so it's not time or mileage.

I have found out that most Ford RV factory shocks are not very good much past around 25K .  I changed mine to Bilsteins.  It's better, but I agree that we are driving trucks, not luxury cars/suvs.  Change them and you will be happier.

Here is a link to what I found on my 2017 2552 https://forum.phoenixusarv.com/index.php?topic=4024.msg34977#msg34977. Since installing the new Bilstein shocks, sway bars, steering stabilizer and Timbren rubber spring kit it drives like a large SUV.  It was well worth the money to upgrade the suspension.

Lots of good choice for shocks if needed.  I have never heard anyone on this forum suggest Monroe RV shocks.  My motorhome mechanic suggested them versus the others and said he would provide lifetime warranty on parts AND labor.  10,000 miles on them with good results.  I also have done all the other suspension upgrades on my 2007 2100.  Heavy duty anti-sway bars, front steering stabilizer, air bags and the shocks.  All worthwhile, but a truck is a truck when it comes to bumps on the road.

Others on this forum have suggested different springs, front and/or rear.  I'll skip this.

I went supposed high end and installed Koni FSD. The rig rode lighter but only because my wallet was light after paying so much. One failed at just under 40,000 miles and ruined a new tire. One of the rears on inspection appears to be leaking.  This time around I’m installing Gabriel fleet line. Are they any good… not a clue but I do know paying more doesn’t guarantee a damn thing.
