Sylvan Lake to Spearfish via Mt Rushmore
« on: August 09, 2021, 11:17:32 am »
Going to Spearfish for the reunion from Sylvan Lake Campground in Custer State Park and while we're in the area we want to see Mt Rushmore. I did notice that the google route has tunnels and the one I looked at, via street view, sign said the height was 10'7". Our 2351D is listed at 10'1" with air unit. This make me a little nervous. Then another tunnel had no sign and was too hard to judge but looked even tighter. This route is on SD87 to SD244. Any one have another way to see Mt Rushmore while in the area?
Jack is what we call our PC 2351D, and he has taken us from campers to RV'ers and loving it. We're no longer Team Bob. Just Jack the RV!

If concerned, consider filling your fresh water and waste water tanks to weigh the rig down to lower your height.

We will be in that area later this season.  When and where specifically will the PC reunion be held?  Maybe we can work a stop in during our travels

I too wonder if our PC will make it through the Rushmore tunnel and needles highway.

I wonder if this guy made it through without damage to his rig.

We decided to avoid the tunnels & hairpin turn roads. Used Trip Wizard to take a safer route. It will require far much less alcohol once we get to the campsite.
The reunion is Sept 19 thru 24 at Spearfish City Campground, Spearfish, SD. But I believe it is sold out, limited to 40 rigs, I think. If you are a member you can check on the club web site, https://phoenixcruisertravelclub.org/, or inquire there about membership. There is generally a cancellation or two and you could get on the waiting list.
Our itinerary is taking us a week to get there, a week plus at the reunion and area then 2 weeks back home. Here's our plans so far with reservations made from American Creek, SD thru to Spearfish. From there we're winging it, but watching, especially on the weekends. Then we might have to make reservations.

9/12-9/13 American Creek Campground
9/14   Cedar Pass Campground
9/15 Devils Tower KOA
9/16-9/17. Blue Bell SP
9/18   Sylvan Lake SP
9/19   Spearfish
9/24   Rapid City Elks Lodge
9/25-9/26. Left Tailrace Campground
9/27   Snake Creek Recreation Area
9/28-9/29 Cottonwood Recreation Area
9/30   Freemont State Rec Area
10/1-10/2   Bob Shelter
10/3   Crowder SP
10/4-10/2   Arrow Rock SP

Thanks a bunch. That confirms that I'll have to leave Sylvan Lake to the town of Custer then up to Mt Rushmore.

Thanks again. Nice find.
