Backup Camera Monitor Not Working
« on: July 09, 2021, 11:43:00 am »
My lastest problem 2018 2552 Ford E450. Backup Camera Monitor is not working. I disconnected the chassis's battery do to a ECM issue. After that the backup camera Monitor stopped working. Does anyone know what fuse number the monitor is connected to? And any suggestions?
Thanks much, John

Is your back-up camera function integrated in the radio display?  Or is it a separate unit mounted elsewhere?

Generally speaking, fuses added by Phoenix are located behind the kick panel associated with the parking brake foot pedal.  If all other Ford fuses check out good (under-hood and under-dash) then remove that panel and check the fuses there.  There are only a few in-line socketed fuses located there that are easy to replace.

Thanks Ron, it's the camera system that Phoenix put in.  You made me think it might be a setting in the radio even though it's separate from the radio. . I went thu this before I just can't remember what the fix was lol

Well that didn't work... Still looking for what fuse number the monitor is or any other troubleshooting steps

I am interested in replacing the BackUp Monitor portion of the  rearview system in my 2007 PC.  I think the camera is functioning properly.  But, the existing monitor is junk.  The display resolution is very poor. Virtually unusable! Mottled to the point of not providing detail.  And, the on screen controls are unreliable. It needs to be upgraded to newer technology.    I'm not even going to mess with repair suggestions.

I would like to find a compatible system to allow replacing the monitor without rewiring everything.  Dealing with the cabling running the length of the coach is the primary obstacle causing me hesitation.

I checked out a plug compatible replacement monitor from the original equipment supplier .And, learned it was priced higher than a premier 60" HD Home Theater Screen.  So, meanwhile, I installed a license plate bracket mounted camera that is viewable on my GPS.  No complaints.  Excellent quality and full featured with customizable parameters.  My only option: it only operates when the transmission is in reverse.

Driving the PC in city traffic, I notice the tendency for motorists to position themselves in known blind spots.  I have good mirrors and am instantly aware of drivers pulling into blindside slots.  I need a full-time rear view camera to detect tailgaters.  I'm going to follow this topic and look for suggestions others have about upgrading fifteen year old  installations

I've got the same issue with the same year of PC. The Zone Defense monitor is shot and unrepairable. Zone Defense has completely changed its wiring connections. I made the mistake of buying a new Zone defense monitor with recommended connectors. But after I looked at all the connectors it still would not hook up to the existing camera.  I'm also hesitant about running new cabling, but may have to. I'll be interested in the replies you get

I have a friend with a livestock trailer he wanted to monitor while underway.  He had a similar camera, the reverse lights powered it so it only worked in reverse. We hooked it up to the marker lights instead, and it worked whenever they were on. Worked well, just had to remember to turn off the marker lights when parked in the daytime!

Our 2006 camera stopped working  2 years ago.  I called PC and asked if there was a replacement screen, that they knew of, to plug in.  The answer was No.  Old technology.
Their advice was to replace camera and monitor with a new, wireless system.  No cables.
I studied, and sent for the Tadi Brothers wireless camera.  Color, no sound.   Mounts over the existing rear view mirror, on the windshield.  7 inch monitor, i believe.
Tapped into old wire feeding the existing monitor.  ( It had power. )
Tapped into the center marker light for power to the camera.   So lights must be on to use.

Beautiful,  sharp color.  Puts the old system so to shame, I couldn't believe it.
When not on, it still functions as a rear view mirror.
You can hide the wire to the monitor by pulling down on the headliner where it meets the windshield, and stuffing it up there.
I too had checked the fuse behind the kick panel, and it was fine.
Totally satisfied with the system,  wished I had done it sooner.

I know, dumb idea, but have you tried calling Dave at Phoenix and asking him where the fuse is?

I had installed the new 10-inch Garmin GPS in my 2552 (which has zero interior rear vision), and wanted to use the matching Garmin wireless camera to provide full-time rear view of traffic (especially in congested areas).  Like most GPS setups, the BC-35 camera automatically broadcasts to the GPS unit only whenever it receives power.  The default idea is to wire it to the reverse lights for use as a backup camera, but I wanted to be able to readily switch between extended full-time rear camera and GPS screens.
The solution was this unit:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P4DZ2JT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Rather than wiring the 12-volt camera feed to reverse or marker lights, I installed this little wireless switch to a constant 12-volt source and fed the camera from that. Hung the key fob on my dash.  Click the "ON" button on the key fob, and I've got camera feed to the Garmin, click the  "OFF" button and I'm back to the GPS screen.
Works great, and I've got a 165 degree view of everything behind me.

Mike

Our 2007 model year PC has the original Zone Defense system with 5" monitor.  It continues to work like it did when the rig was new with exception to the sound which stopped working some years ago.  It was nice to hear my wife standing behind the rig giving verbal instruction when backing up.

I can raise the volume on the monitor and hear the ambient sound like I did before, but I don't hear anything from the camera in back.  I thought maybe there was a tiny hole for the microphone and it got clogged with dirt or something, but I never found such a hole on the camera or elsewhere.  I inquired about it a few times with Phoenix but never got an answer, also tried to work with Zone Defense with no reply, so I gave up.  I'd hate to break the seals of and around the rear camera to investigate, only to learn I was looking in the wrong place.

My Zone Defense owners manual does not cover what I need to know.  If anyone knows were the rear microphone is on the old Zone Defense system, I would like to hear from you.

I replaced mine a few years ago with a wireless system from Tadi Brothers also. Works much better than that lousy rearview camera stuck in the rearview mirror. I took the old camera off the back and installed the monitor to the left of the driver on the dash. It is on all the time as I like to see when a slow Prius is trying to pass me lol.

I have followed the links suggested in this thread.  Looking to find a direct replacement for the factory mounted system, it appears nothing is offered.  I want a camera that can be inserted into the  existing camera receptacle.  The one that is factory molded into the top frame of the PC and faces rearward from above the clearance lights..

Same for the monitor.  I want to re use the existing swivel bracket that suspends the screen from the headliner - above the driver.

Although I haven't stumbled onto the combination, it is difficult to believe there isn't something that exactly matches.

Strange.  My 2007 backup camera is "bracketed" on, not molded into the rear wall.  You have a 2007 model year, right?

Here is my 2007 back-up camera.
