HWH Leveling System Malfunction
« on: June 27, 2021, 12:23:06 am »
We have a 2014 2552 with the HWH Leveler system.  On a recent trip, the drivers side front jack would retract vertically up but would not rotate backwards (to the rear) into the fully STORE position.  I've placed a call to HWH but they have a backlog and I have not received a call back yet.  Is this as simple as a thorough cleaning or low level of fluid?  I did have the jacks checked out by HWH when passing through Iowa in 2019 and they were great to work with as they provided a complimentary check on the system to ensure it was operating properly.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Can you swing it up by hand? If so, you may have a problem with your springs. If you can't swing it up by hand then the kick down actuator may be staying pressurized or the pivot point may need cleaning and lubricating. HWH has two different set ups for pressurizing these jacks.

One uses two hoses, one hose to the kick down actuator and one hose to the jack itself. There are separate devices that operate the kick down actuator and the jack that require troubleshooting.

The other setup uses a single hose that feeds pressure to the jack through the kick down actuator. I don't know when they changed from one design to the other. If you have the single hose setup and the jack is coming up then pressure should also be releasing from the kick down actuator and the springs should swing them up.

HWH has lots of detailed info on the operation of their systems online. If you can get the part number off the decal on the jack the website may be helpful.

Update:  Following Kevin's counsel, I was under the coach today and lubricated all points of movement on all four jacks (BTW, our jacks have the single hydraulic line).  In addition, I wire brushed the large springs to remove any crusting/rusted material (fortunately, very little corrosion).  Then I tried the jacks and all moved easily to the upright position.  When I put it into the STORE mode, all but the driver front jack moved to the store position.  I could more easily move it by hand into the STORE position but in the process of moving it back and forth, the tensioner broke (actually it is the tensioner that determines the degree of vertical tilt).  Though this is not the likely source of the original problem, it was better to have it break in the driveway than on the road.  I will order four of them and replace them all since they may all be ready to break.  Again, if anyone has additional recommendations....I'm listening.  Thanks again.

So if it swings up easily by hand but does not swing up when the store button is pressed and the springs are good, I'm out of ideas.

Please update us when you figure it out.

I will update when I have additional information to share.  HWH has still not called - must be a tremendous backlog.

Thanks,
Wayne

I spoke with Frank from HWH today and he was very helpful.  Turns out the actuator (small piston on back side of jack) is stuck and will need to be replaced - along with the cable tensioner that holds it in the vertical position.  I ordered two of the wire cable tensioners - the first to replace the broken one and then a spare to have "just in case" another one breaks ($40 apiece).  The actuator itself is not in stock due to issues with suppliers so that will need to be replaced in the future.  Bottom line:  three of the four levelers work at this time.  I'll continue to see if I can loosen up the actuator that is stuck but if 3500 psi can't move it, I'm not sure I can.  I'm open to suggestions, however!!!  Thanks again for the advice...so appreciated.

Check with  Stuart's Service - 2990 C.R. 6 W - Elkhart, IN - 800-826-6267 | 574-262-0225. They may be able to provide an actuator. I talked with them a few weeks ago about actuator availability to replace a leaking one and Chuck thought he could get one. They are around $240.00 each.

At this point Campers Inn is supposed to be replacing the entire jack assembly under warranty vs replacing just the leaking actuator on my coach.

Thank you, Kevin...appreciated!   And I thought the cable tensioner was expensive at $40   :)

We bought a new 2351d from Campers Inn,Jacksonville,  in April, it has been a total pain in the a**.  We are driving from Colorado to the factory in August to attempt to fix the levelers and other items to include, awning, inverter, water heater, tv macerator, and door , guessing we will experience other issues based on what has happened..  Hoping our experience with Phoenix improves.  Seems pretty crazy.
