Lights out
« on: May 24, 2021, 12:36:32 pm »
I have a couple of questions concerning lights.
On the remote switch for the Onan Gen Set the ‘hour meter’ is out.  I have no idea how many hours are on the generator. Do I need to replace the remote switch?
The water heater control has that red light between gas and electric that should be on when system is on?.  This has never worked.  I replaced with a new red light and still no light.
Both of these issues were present when I bought the 2008 2350 PC last year.  I never realized that the joy of ownership in a motorhome becomes a part time hobby tweaking this and that and fixing stuff!

The red light on the water heater switch turns on when there is a problem.  It's not an on/off indicator for the water heater itself.

Take the RV to a Cummings/Onan shop nearby, let them figure out what you need.  I presume the start/prime/off switch works and the generator itself provides power.

On any 12 year old vehicle, there will be some things that simply wear out one way or another.  Hopefully, the old owner passed all the manuals on to the dealer and the dealer gave them to you.

If not, get the Manufacturer model and serial numbers where you can and get the manuals by searching on Google.

Sparroweye,

As Don says, you likely do not have a problem with your water heater light.  I was confused by that at one time as well--but the light is a fault light, and if your heater is working properly it won't light until you have a problem.  I suppose you could "introduce" a problem and see if it comes on  :)--but it's very likely just fine.

Regarding the hour meter.  The meter runs from a simple positive/negative 12-volt feed.  It has a ground wire on one side, and picks up a positive 12-volt signal from the adjacent Start/Stop switch when the generator is running.  If your remote start control is working properly (primes, starts generator, stops generator)--the wiring feed between your generator and the remote panel is likely fine, and you probably have a faulty meter.  Should be pretty easy to check for proper voltage and ground with a multimeter.  I don't know if you can pick up just a replacement meter that will fit, but the control panels are commonly available for about $50.

All the best,       Mike

And yes you bought into a hobby. Even buying new doesn’t change it from being a hobby. The cost of any hobby can in many circumstances be directly related to the passion one has for any hobby in question.  Now go forth and enjoy!

I will check out the meter and if it’s an easy fix I’ll do it.  Relieved that water heat switch should be off and a little embarrassed!   I printed off the wonderful new manual PC put out, 3 holed punched it and was planning on adding it to all the others.  Maybe I should read it first!
Thanks everyone for your help.... this blog is a Godsend.

Sparroweye,
I recently purchased a 2012 2552 and the hour meter was out as well.  I diagnosed the wiring first and then spent $17 for a replacement hour meter.  Works like a champ.  Direct replacement with POS/NEG on the back.  No modification to the panel.  Beats spending $38 for a replacement panel from PC. You can get them on Amazon.

The first thing I would do is to simply unscrew and pull away your Onan control panel and make sure the hour meter you have is properly connected.  You never know.  You might find a disconnected wire.  Reattach it and all is well.  If the connections are secure, then follow Gixxerkid3's advice.  That would be step #2.....hopefully your final step.

Just like Joseph says....owning any motorhome is best mentally handled as a hobby.  Things happen so be sure to have the right attitude about it or you will never be a happy camper.

Additionally, I could not agree more with the fact that an RV is a Hobby. Im still learning about mine and so far, we love it.  We just bought our RV last month and we have done so much “personalizing”. It was / is in outstanding shape when we purchased but we are upgrading as we go.  Preventative maintenance (as with anything) is key to keeping our coaches in tip top shape. My 2012 only has 10500 miles on it but I went through the motor and changed all the fluids, filters, etc.  I also changed the gen oil since the hour meter was dead, but I would have changed it anyway.  I do that on every used vehicle I purchase.
Best wishes to you on yours.
