Dometic A/C Molex Plug
« on: April 14, 2021, 06:25:47 pm »
Upgrading an old Dometic Duo-Therm to a Penguin II 651816HXX1C0-01. The new unit comes with a Molex 194030014 120V power connector. My older unit had a junction box for power connection and the instructions for the new unit claims a junction box is supplied and is used to make power connections; this is blatantly untrue.

The Molex part number is 194030014 and I'm not able to find a mating unit for it yet. I called City Electric and they couldn't locate one.

I called the vendor, Country Camping Corner in Kings Mountain, NC. They apparently didn't know they were talking to an electrician by the way they bandied about unrelated terms. I think they're one of those "we just sell this stuff" outfits. They first told me I would have to cut this Molex connector off so I could connect power and when I said I'll bet y'all won't honor the warranty if I do. The next words out of his mouth were "yeah, you're going to have to buy a connector".

I sent a support request to Dometic; hope I live long enough to get a response. :-) Also calling some vendors online tomorrow.

Has anyone else encountered this? Solved it?

Thanks Don. I saw that on the Molex site and I did find some of the 194031300 online. I refrained from ordering one as the pictures/specs provided don't really tell me visually if they'll work.

I just got off the phone with Dometic support and they're clueless. They don't know anything about a Molex connector being used in this unit. Imagine that. :-) They're supposedly going to find out and email me the exact part number I need or agree that I can cut it off and make up the power connection in a junction box like the instructions say to do. I'll keep the thread posted.

and the instructions for the new unit claims a junction box is supplied and is used to make power connections; this is blatantly untrue.

Maybe there are missing parts?  Call the vendor you got it from, and see if they can open another box and see. If they are reluctant to do so, tell them you will be returning the unit, as it is missing parts that the manual says are supposed to be there. This may motivate them.

Electrical: New units come with a mobile-home electrical connector pre-installed on the power cable. At least mine did... but Dometic only gave me 1 half of the connector pair. The connector is thin/flat and certified as a junction box. This opens up some additional room for airflow around the side of the duct (vs- the old steel junction box), so I bought the other half of the connector pair and used it. There are many variations of this Self-Contained Power Connector (SCPC), and here is the specific part if you need the other half for 12ga romex:

Edit 2 -

Pg 12-14 covers the connector.   https://documents.dometic.com/?object_id=54637

Saw that post. If you look at the datasheet for the part that link goes to is has a "mates to" section. The 194030014 (the part in my unit) isn't listed.

Well RATS.  You wouldnt think that they would have used two different connectors in the same model.

I have seen similar connectors that 'Mate to themselves', IE:  Flip one over, and they connect. This almost looks like it could do that. If you look at the WRONG part datasheet i supplied, it does mate with itself.

https://www.mouser.com/datasheet/2/276/0190451000_IO_CONNECTORS-140221.pdf

Edit - I bet it will mate to another molex 194030014.  Just like these do, I use these frequently - https://www.grainger.com/product/3BY20

EDIT - Page 14 in Dometic manual, Fig 29 - "Hermaphroditic" Part Mates With Itself   (cheer)

EDIT - It would be REALLY nice if they had connected another 194030014 to the one attached to the wires on the unit when they pack it. Guess that would make too much sense.

Well, as I expected from dealing with Dometic in the past, they decided to NOT call back or email me the information I requested as they promised.

I made the decision to follow the included directions and use a junction box. To use a junction box as the directions instruct it was necessary to take a pair of 9" Klein side cutters and remove the offending Molex adapter.

Problem solved. :-)
