Ladder Leak

Ladder Leak

On my new Cruiser I found rusted screws and thought I would change them to Stainless. I remove one rusted screw and water came out the hole. The ladder being folded I drill a four-¼ inch holes in the bottom of each leg and lot’s of water came out!

How about more clarification here. ?Is this something we all ought to check out?  How much water? What screw did you pull out? Hints and suggestions?

I am beginning to wish my pole barn was heated so that I could tinker all winter like you people. HMMMM?  You  think I could convince the other half that heating the pole barn is a great idea  and a necessity???

When I folded my ladder in the up position I noticed the screws that hold on the black plastic (hinge part) the flat head screws were rusting. I removed one screw (that holds the black hinge thingy on) to see if a stainless steel screw I had would fit, thats when the water came out of the screw hole.  So I drilled a 1/4" hole in all four leg bottoms. (Those black thingys) Is thingy a word????????

    I just went out into the cold and drilled the holes in the black plastic hinge. Water came out of one of the top legs. The ladder already had a hole in the bottom. I have seen water come out of it in the past.

Had water in both legs of my ladder.  Thanks for posting--probably should add this topic to the general area, too.  Now I have to go dry off my drill...

I was wondering how long it would take you to chime in on this.  I need the ladder to get my kayaks up top. I also have found that the roof is a good place to get away from the kids and my honey. lol

Sorry for that lame joke.  I never meant to imply it's a bad idea to have a ladder and rack.  It's just not for me....at least not just yet.  I came from a different mold than most.

I do have my roof rack and ladder stored in my "other" house in case I ever change my mind.

Ron, I did think about you when I was drilling my ladder legs, that you wouldn't have to do this.  One advantage I've found with having the ladder is using it to absorb the impact instead of the mh when backing into an overhang while looking in the wrong direction.  I've kept the dent in the top of the ladder to constantly remind me to look up as well as side to side--old dog, old tricks, old blunders.. pyho.

Now here is really lame:  When have a ladder and you back into the gutters it's not near as hard on them and you only leave two half round dents.


Ask me how I know after seeing my neighbor do it to 2 grand worth of new guttering.

While co-pilot was shampooing the carpets I drilled the requisite holes into the ladder brackets & came out w/only a weep in 1 of them.  Must be the "Dry Heat" of Arizona! 
 ;)
Full wash today & oil change later in the week (I almost soiled myself when the local RV dealer AWA "quickie" lube/oil change shops quoted $70-$100 w/o the oil or filter!).  Father-in-law has ramps & drain tubs & I sh/be able to figure it out from there.

Dry heat is still heat!  We're 90+miles north of Phoenix, so it's a little less dry here.  Still can't figure how so much water got in my ladder--must be condensation. You can certainly beat the cost of your local rv dealer for an oil change.  I buy the oil and filter at walmart, crawl under (it's high enough for me without ramps) drain the oil, change the filter (it's in a convient location and easy to change and fill up with new oil in less than 20 minutes.  While I'm under there, I also lube it since I have the time--and all for less than $20.
