Awning will Not Open.
« on: September 27, 2020, 08:28:49 am »
Just tried to open open awning after several months. Starts to open then arms stop and fabric just wants to unfurl. I pulled on arms thinking stuck but no luck. I rolls backs in OK but several tried and same result. Something stuck?

Once about a foot of fabric unfurls you need to pull the arms away from the side of the rig, then continue to open.  At least that is how ours works....

Ours does that periodically. I just put my right hand up and gently push on the awning roll just outside the door. The bars usually pop open pretty quick and the awning continues to deploy without a problem.

Got it to open by first  pulling arms out about a foot to tighten the fabric slack. The front tightener knob was also tightened down for some reason which did not help. But when I bring it back in and try to extend it again the same thing happens and I have to pull the arms again. Maybe it will fix itself over time.

Do you have a wind sensor installed on your awning?  I wonder if the vibration of opening the awning could be setting off the wind sensor and causing the awning to close.  My awning will sometimes close when I don't want it to, like when I am cleaning it.  Trying to avoid this, I removed the sensor while I cleaned the awning and I learned that if the sensor is removed, there is a timer in the controller that will retract the awning automatically after several minutes.  The wind sensor is a good idea, but I don't always like it when things have a mind of their own.

There is no wind sensor. We had them on our previous Class A's but very unreliable even when I kept adjusting the dip switches. We never left the awning out when away from the coach at all. And a couple times when I deployed this awning, if I did not release the switch immediately at full rollout, the awning decided to roll back up. I never had that happen on previous 2 power awnings both of which were also Dometic. Sounds like gremlins at work. Of course the awning has not been used in at least 6-8 months so might need some TLC. The factory got this unit in Jan/Feb from previous owner and we bought it March 23.

2 Frazzled has the correct answer.  Mine does the same and I handle it the same way he does.   The adjustment knobs should be moderately tightened AFTER you loosen them with the awning OUT, once the arms fully extend, then moderately tighten them and then, roll the awning up into travel position.

Earl and Kyle (sales manager and operations manager under prior owner of Phoenix) both emphasized that to me.  The adjustable arms must be fully extended when rolling in or out!  Once rolled out, then adjust to your desired position.
