All goes well until it doesn't
« on: September 08, 2020, 10:21:17 am »
I am almost finished finding all the loose stuff in my RV.  The holder for the stove cover is almost coming off the wall.  Anyway I had to take the stove out in order to get at the screws/etc.  While unscrewing the line my brain went dead and I twisted the line about.  It appears as though the line is long enough that I can cut and flair.  Question is:  Should I have a professional do the job?

I am sure you can perform the task.  The flaring of copper tubing is pretty straight forward, you can do a single or double flare.  I am sure the original was just a single flare. If you don't have a flaring kit you can pick-up one for little to nothing at Harbor Freight and it comes with easy to use instructions, also get a tubing cutter it will make a nice straight cut on the end of the tubing.  Test with soap and water when finished to ensure a proper seal...

I suspect you will need a bit more copper line, if possible replace the whole line but yes, flareing copper tubing is easy and as Lance says, test with soapy water.

I also agree.  You can cut it or extend it yourself.

When I reconfigured our 2007 model year base cabinet to 3 large drawers, the opportunity arose to seal off the left side of the stove-top storage pocket.  Do so eliminated the worry of things falling behind the drawers.  Just a little carpentry skill took good care of it.

Thanks to all the replies.   I am PO's that I even did this, but stuff happens. Ron,  I read your article and when you were rerouting the gas line, was there enough to cut off about 4 inches?   Also, when you say extend the line, what is used to accomplish this?

Hi Bob,

It has been a long time since I reconfigured the base cabinet drawers.  All I remember about my gas line is that I was able to bend it out of the way of the new deeper drawer that would have otherwise had an interference with.  In your case I would cut off all damaged line using a pipe cutter for a clean cut.  Then see if you can bend the remaining portion sufficiently to the stove top.  You might have more line than you realize by picking up more length when drawing across behind the left cabinet group at an angle.

Regarding "extending" the line, there are "couplings" sold for that specific purpose.  You will need more copper line as well.  Take what you cut off to a home improvement center to help select what to purchase.  I feel there is less worry about a gas leak than people realize because the PSI of gas is so much less than that of fresh water.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a pile of my own mishaps around the house.

Ron,  I suspected I have more line just by straightening the 3-4 bends.  I am going to get a flaring tool at harbor freight and try that first.  If that don't work, then plan b.

Thanks to all.  I got it repaired.  Had enough pipe to cut approx 3 inches off.   Good time to secure the pipe as I found out some of the rattling and styrofoam  squeaking was all about.  The 2 gas lines come up through the floor and run right along side the water heater styrofoam shroud.  Yes they rub and squeak like crazy.  I wedged pipe insulation between the wtr htr and pipes.  Squeak is gone.

Again thanks to all for your suggestions/tips.

Thanks.  I did work out for the better.  Now I really know about 85% of the interior stuff and fixed (to my satisfaction) about 60% of all the little things I thought could be better.  Thanks to all for giving me your insight/tips and suggestions regarding the PC.
