Kwikstep / Kwik-Lube

I keep looking at the "lubricate this once a month" sticker on the kwik step, knowing I'm past due.

In the instructions, it says one must only use their special "kwik lube" spray-on grease or the heavens will open and a rain of cats and dogs will presage the end of days.  (Paraphrasing.)

Is this true?  With finite cargo capacity, I'd prefer not to lug around something so special purpose.  What do you use?

Bill, are talking about "Marvel" mystery oil? I used that in my air impact wrench every day, about 6 drops, it lasted a long time. Then I rebuilt it!

Sold my jet boat but still have the Bombardier spray lube and it is worlds better than normal lubes for staying where you want it to be.

    I have used white lithium grease(which comes in a spray can), for the past seven years on my steps, and they are still working fine. I use it every 2 monh's or so, and wipe off the excess.

I am a bad boy.  I think I lubricated my step once, a few months after I bought my PC in June of 2007.  That would make it .....3.5 years ago.  It does work extremely well with no strange sounds or squeeks.

Are you owners having issues with your electric step, or is it simply preventative maintenance?  I suppose I should lube mine up.

All this forum talk and it's been about as long for me, and while looking for what I used before I found a can of the lithium spray stuff in the cabinet and you would be surprised at the lower noise level while actuating.  I guess you should lube, ever now and again, or at least a year or so.  You should have  the wind at your back after you crawl under to get the hidden lube spots.

Now that has me thinking about the slides, hmmmmmmmm.

How do you lube the slide?  On our last trip, my slide was making noise and I sprayed the sliding arms on the sides with silicone and the noise stopped.  I looked under the slide and wondered if I should lube the screw drive somehow.

Well this sure turned interesting.

I'm glad to know my step isn't about seize up, and that I can be a bit flexible in what I use.

And I'm definitely interested in hearing more about how (and how often) people lubricate their slide-out.

I'm also interested in info regarding the best way to lube the slide (a little Lithium grease on the metal to metal areas?).
My last rig had hydraulic cylinders that moved the slide so I can't draw from that.

You should use a dry lubricant on all the metal components.  Don't use a moist lubricant like wd-40 since it will attract dust and road grime--a dry lubricant will not.  Protect All makes a very good dry slideout lube.  I've used the walmart slideout lube, but I'm not sure about it's quality.  You'll have to crawl under the slide to get to the mechanism.  Clean off as much dust/grime as you can (I also crank up the compressor and blow out the area), then spray the lube on all the moving parts.  I also lube the joint points on the sides of the slide.

It is just incredible to me that in this day and age anyone makes equipment that has to be serviced monthly and besides that it is a PITA to do. Surely Phoenix can find a step supplier with self lubicating bushings or something simpler than this. I just use engine oil and it lasts at least 3 months but is messy to apply climbing underneath with an oil can.

Go to a bicycle shope, and purchase bicycle chain lube, won't collect dirt, works great on the step.
