Nova Scotia

My wife and I plan to go to the New England states and Nova Scotia this summer.  Do any of you have any experience with the best time frame that we should be thinking about ie.:  June, July, August or early September?  We plan to spend about a month on the road.  Have any of you gone by ferry from Maine over to Nova Scotia with your PC's?

Last year we went from Florida to Nova Scotia and then on to Prince Edward Island (when you go onto Phoenix website-Adventure Anywhere-you will see our photo in front of the Wood Islands Lighthouse in PEI). We left in June and did the Blue Ridge Parkway/Shenandoah NP and then on up. We spent 3 monthes on the road.

We are going again this year to finish Nova Scotia and then to PEI again. We are leaving FL on June 19 and heading to Sebastian Inlet SP, Ft. Clinch SP, the Outer banks and onward. We plan to be gone 3 monthes again.

We have not taken the Ferry from New Brunswick to Digby NS beacuse of the cost. We drive through Maine to New Brunswick and then to Nova Scotia. We will then take the Ferry from Nova Scotia to PEI. Did that last year with no problems. The ferry from NS to PEI is free. You pay when you get off the island.

We had a wonderful trip. Beautiful country. Stayed at some super campgrounds and some not so super. If you would like more info, sent a PM.

Be careful about using a ferry in Canada.  I read on another forum that they charge rv's by the foot, and the price was recently increased significantly.

My brother and his wife ferried through lower Alaska with their 21 foot Starflyte.  They had a rear hitch rack.  The rack came off to save big by-the-foot money.

Another problem they were faced with regularly was the difference in height between the pier and the ferry.  Pending tidal conditions, the angle of approach had them scraping the rear of the motor home, doing damage to things more than once.  You might want to invest in those rear end protecting wheel thingies to prevent damage to things like your mascerator pump.

On the Ferry from New Brunswick to Digby, Nova Scotia, they charge by the foot and then add a per person fee and I believe, a fuel surcharge. Their website is nfl-bay.com.

On the ferry from Nova Scotia to PEI, the fare is collected when you leave. We take the ferry over and the Confederation Bridge back. The bridge is $42 which is less than the ferry.

Both ferries transport semi's so you won't have any problem with size.

There used to be a ferry from Maine to Nova Scotia but last year it was discontinued.

We were up to Nova Scotia 15 years ago.  We go to Maine every year.  We took the ferry from St John's Canada to Nova Scotia with our MH. We had no problems and the expense was not too bad.  We drove route 1 all the way up through Maine to St John.  The scenery is wonderful. In Nova Scotia there is a campground overlooking the ocean on the lighthouse trail called The Ovens(www.ovenspark.com) that we enjoy. The campground is owned by Harry Chapin's kids and they too are gifted singers and put on some good shows. You could spend weeks up in Nova Scotia and PEI. We went the first three weeks in June and the weather was a bit cold, but tourists were less.  July and August are bib tourist season up there, because it is warmer.
