Luggage rack dimensions
« on: April 03, 2020, 12:04:55 pm »
What is the clearance from the roof to the bottom of the tubes along the sides?
What is the diameter of the tubes?

Thanks

I'm guessing that you don't have one on your PC or you would go measure it...are you wanting to build one yourself? I can go crawl under the cover and measure on my 2551 if so.
Personally, IMHO   :)(:  I see no use for it, would never tie anything up there, more drag and weight ...looks cool tho. ;) I do use the side rail to assist hoisting myself up there when needed.
(maybe that will get some response as to what people do put up there)

My estimate... 1/2" aluminum tubing and about 4.5" from roof to top of rail.

I only use it for mounting my cell booster antenna and then like 2Lucky...to help get up/down the ladder.

I mounted one of these flood lights on the back tube and find it very useful for boondocking.   I simply ran the wire the short distance to the bathroom fan and mounted a switch and got power back there.   You can also find similar lights with a wireless remote control.   Note the lumens.   I found these a few years ago and used them to replace old 12v halogen landscape lights and they have given perfect service.

That is such a great idea, I ordered three! I've been wanting to put exterior lights on back and both sides of the coach (like on my Aliner) to illumminate the whole boondock site if needed or I'm surprised in the middle of the night. This will be a whole lot easier than the complex wiring I was trying to imagine that would be needed for the porch light-like fixtures I was thinking of.

Brilliant in more ways than one!!  :)(: :)(:  (3 to be exact)  Thanks

I agree, that is a great idea.

It looks to be very tiny.  Another interesting mounting point would be on the conventional crank-up Winegard antenna.  It would be mounted a few feet higher for a broader spread of light and less in-your-face, though on the rack is already so.  You can also direct the light to where it is needed by turning the antenna.  One issue with that idea is the shadow cast by the roof itself.

  Follow up:
I actually ordered four, and finally found the Round Tuit I needed to get it done.  I put the 4th light behind the grill on front and three on the roof rack rails that I thought I'd never need. I drilled a hole through the side of the black tank vent pipe near the ceiling in the bath closet and ran the rear light wires out the top of the vent (plugged the vent pipe hole in the closet with shoe-goo.) Wired the front light under the coach. I powered it all off of the bathroom closet light to a master with individual lighted switches for each of the four lights. Put the switches in the wall above the curb side bed so I can reach up, hit one switch, and fill the site with light at night (in case of fright, or hindsight, or just delight.) The hardest part was getting the nerve to drill into the paneling. Figured I could always cover it up with a picture or something if needed. I just had to remember what we carpenters used to say, "it's only a piano, it's not a Steinway..."

Can't wait to illuminate that bear or coyote or the person who thinks they want to park right next to me in the middle of nowhere!

We continue to enjoy ours on the PC.   I also replaced my 12v exterior lighting halogen with these little 10 watt wonders.  I am tempted to buy a couple of the 30 watters and get my sunglasses on after dark heartshower!

By the way, I also bought some similar 30 watt 110v with motion sensors and replaced my old halogen flood lights in the backyard of our home.   They have been great lights for the last few years and you can adjust the sensitivity so birds, small animals etc will either set them off or takes something bigger like a person.   So far, they have alerted me to armadillos once, skunks more than I want to recall, possums galore, racoons and an occasional fox or two.   Kind of fun when they go off in the winter before bed time to see what is visiting our little "nature preserve".   They are, as I recall, 300 watt halogen equivalent and I believe it when they light up.   I seem to recall they cost about $30 each on Amazon.
