New sewer hose storage solution
« on: April 03, 2020, 10:42:51 am »
This may not be applicable to other models but for my 2014 - 2350 model this fits like a glove.  I looked at the Valterra and Super Tube products but both of them have fixed position brackets that wouldn't work/ I found the Ultra-Tow conduit carrier kit from Northern Tool - https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200649179_200649179 - and the bonus is that it uses 6" sewer pipe that easily accomodates my RhinoFlex hose with all fittings and has enough room to store an extension hose as well.  U-brackets attached to frame rail (one hole was already there!) but I had to shim it down from the frame a few foam pads (all I had on hand)  in order to stay below black tank.  Sturdy & spacious - since my macerator has been out of service twice due to broken ears (nice to discover when tanks are full and attempting to dump)  I've added a "fail safe" Valterra Black T58 Twist-On Waste Valve before macerator close that valve and simply use the rear sewer hose hookup.

Great job! I did something similar with 6" drain pipe that has 1" holes along the length of the pipe which lets the sewer hose dry while in the carrier.

Please tell us more about your problem with the Macerator. I don't know what the "ears" are.

Thanks

Hmm, great idea Ashby - wish I would've thought of that!
Note that newer models (I think?) have the "Turbo" Sanicon so might be different for you but on mine the adapter that screws onto the actual macerator and attaches to the sewer outlet has twice had the plastic "ears" break off allowing it to separate and sewage to gush onto the ground.  I had an entire new assembly installed at the factory and Doug beefed up the support but it seems road vibration coupled with cheap plastic isn't a good combo as it happened again last year.  That time I simply ordered a new adapter from Carol and installed it myself, it's still fine but now I'm prepared if it fails with a backup valve and hose.

Ron, you have the exact set-up that I was contemplating with the Valterra tube, fortunately I did an "engineering test" with a 5 inch cardboard tube I had in my garage.  What I found is that I could attach the back end to the frame rail on the driver's side but the door that you have on passenger side would interfere with my storage drawer.  Close but no cigar so stopping short on the passenger side and opening below sanicon access door worked, the adjustable hangers were needed to utilize frame raised since I couldn't attach to sanicon door or black tank.  Must be just enough of a difference in gas tank placement on yours vs mine to make the passenger side opening too small.  Would've saved me some time but hey, that's all I got right now.  (exactly)

Thanks Dogyard, your right my 2019 does not have detachable connection, just pipe with glued coupling. Thank goodness!

I reinforced the plastic "ears" on the outside of them with a good amount of JB Weld and smeared some around where the ears are molded on.    The whole design on our 2350 is poor in my opinion.   As stated in the posts above, normal road vibration is pretty tough and the whole shebang on our rig was out of a straight alignment from the pump to the connection the ears fit on.    So, a stress was already in play.   I realigned the pump mounting bracket with shims in an attempt to partially correct that problem.     I love the system but I really wish it had been installed a little differently.   JB, Gorilla Duct Tape, and Gorilla Glue:   what would I do with an rv without them??  roflol

What I found is that I could attach the back end to the frame rail on the driver's side but the door that you have on passenger side would interfere with my storage drawer.
Here is our 2007 2350 outdoor storage compartment.  It has no drawer as shown.  Maybe the design of the later drawer system renders my idea here a bad one for people with drawers.

This is the tube below the compartment.  I can open the tube and remove the hose just fine.  Like I mentioned in my post for this, it is not ideal because the access is on the wrong side of the motor home.  But given it is there for emergency use alone, it's more like a spare tire than anything else.  So it doesn't have to be ideal.

Ron, every time I've seen photos of your storage compartment I'm envious, and not just because it's immaculately clean! I think the slide-out drawer assembly is a bad design as the weight carrying capacity is far less than what can be stored in yours.  Mine is already "cocked" with one side never wanting to go in as far as the other - it needs to be pushed in, then secured with the latch to stay in place.  I haven't been able to adjust the glide rail so I just limit the BIG spacious drawer to carrying lightweight supplies and accessories with heavier items like my Blackstone griddle on the shelf above.

I only seen the drawer systems on-line, never in-person.  But I always thought they were a marketing ploy.  They sure look nice and organize your stuff better.  But for our needs, a bigger compartment is better utilized and also better sealed.  I honestly think Irene and I could both get inside our exterior storage compartment and close the door.  It is that big.

In an odd way, I place exterior drawers in the category along with slide outs.  They are not attractive to me given our plan to keep our PC until we are no longer safe drivers.  That is hoped to be at least a 35 year ownership.  I don't think I could get 35+ trouble-free years with slide-outs and exterior drawers.  But at the same time, slide-outs and drawers can keep working with enough owner-determination.  I am simply attracted to simplicity.

The 2350 exterior storage compartment got smaller with the drawer, but got smaller yet when Phoenix relocated the fresh water tank forward and centered for improved weight distribution and for improved vehicle handling.  So there were sacrifices made in storage for gains in other areas.  That is why it was even more important for our 2007 E350 chassis to have the aftermarket heavy duty suspension upgrades to counter-act the 300 pounds of fresh water sitting in the right rear corner of the motor home, along with the extra weight placed in that storage compartment.  Every benefit has it's gains and losses.  I am fortunate to have a solution to address my losses via suspension upgrades.
