NEWBIE with several questions
« on: February 10, 2020, 10:40:19 pm »
Hello.  I'm Robin Rodriquez.  I joined this group several months ago, but time got away from me.  We purchased our 2011 2551 in August, driving from Huntsville TX to Jacksonville FL to pick it up sight-unseen from Campers Inn.  It immediately went in the shop locally for 2.5 months to fix things the dealer didn't do (but they paid for the repairs).  Then we drove it 9 hours out in west TX for Thanksgiving and boondocked on relative's property.  Back in the shop for more attention.  Then end of December boondocked at daughter's in Dallas area.  So we had our first "real" camping this past week for only two nights in east TX.  While boondocking we were unable to plug in and had to use battery/generator/engine.  Batteries didn't last long so had to use the generator or the truck engine to charge them.  At home we are using a battery maintainer to keep them charged since we are unable to plug in at home either.  Campers Inn gave us a 15 to 20 connector saying that would work to be able to plug in at home.  The repair shop here said the same thing, but every time we try it throws a relay on the circuit which is 20 amp. So what do we really need to be able to plug our PC in at our home?  Do we need to install a special outlet in the garage?  We really love our PC and are slowly outfitting it to meet our needs.

Loose Steering:  The steering seems very loose to me.  My husband says it's okay for him and he had his truck-driver brother test drive it and he didn't have a problem with it.  It's scary to drive for me with such loose steering.  Is this normal?

Back up camera:  We have the camera, but no monitor.  The dealer was supposed to give us one, but we never got it, even after several calls to them.  They told us the black cover on the dash was where the monitor would go.  Husband recently looked up the brand and said that location is for a GPS.  So, do we just need to purchase a monitor and attach it somewhere on the dash?

TV:  We've had a heck of a time trying to figure out how to operate the TVs.  (There is some sort of dome on the roof that is for the TV, but not sure how that works.  Probably have to subscribe to some service to use it.  Should we remove it?)  We just use the regular antenna that you crank up or will use the cable at a RV park once we start staying at those.  The park last week was a Corps of Engineers park so no cable hookup.  Never could get the antenna to pick up anything.  We've followed the instructions given by the dealer, but still problems.  (We really need to make the trip to PC and let them go over everything.)

So, in looking around this forum, it seems very complicated and the information seems outdated.  Such as the Phoenix Cruisers Owners Club.  The link provided there is no good.  The Factory Contacts appear to be outdated.  I did see a reference that they were looking for a different platform for this group that would be more user friendly.  That would be GREAT!  I finally figured out the most current posts are at the very end.  I tried searching for "loose steering" and found a little, but the talk is above my understanding.

I feel very overwhelmed in trying to understand the workings of the PC and where to find information.  I tried to ask a couple of questions on the FB group, but they insisted that I come here, so here I am, finally.  Hoping some friendly soul can offer a lot of (dumbed-down) answers to my elementary questions.  Thank you in advance for any information!
Robin

Sounds like your very new to RVing. Good luck but all of us started from scratch somewhere. I like to use the saying that "Sometimes you don't even know what you don't know".

You didn't say if it is the RV if the circuit is in the RV  or in your house. I'm assuming it is your household circuit.
Trouble shooting suggestions
1. Make sure all electrical equipment in the RV is turned off including the frig
2. Make sure you are not plugging it in to a GFI receptacle. If so plug it into a different receptacle as close to the fuse box as possible
3. Make sure you use a household receptacle that is using a limited amount of other electrical connections.
4. Use a heavy duty 15 AMP Extension Cord that is 14 gauge grounded STW. Both male and female ends are NEMA 5-15. 125V/1875W
with as short of length as possible.
5. If those suggestions don't work you need to call an electrician. Your household wiring may not be able to handle the load.

Loose Steering:  The steering seems very loose to me.  My husband says it's okay for him and he had his truck-driver brother test drive it and he didn't have a problem with it.  It's scary to drive for me with such loose steering.  Is this normal?

Don't worry about it. Your driving a truck not a sports car. It's going to have a different feel.

Your monitor is likely on the sun visor. Other then that you need to talk to your dealer. I don;t quite understand your problem. Why would your dealer sell you a camera without a monitor??? A monitor is part of the backup system????? If you only have a camera you don't have a backup system???

Sounds like you have a satellite system. You also should have an antenna for local stations. You have a switch that lets you choose either one. Sounds like you need some specific assistance on this one. Because there is also the sound system that can be very complicated in synchronizing everything. Check the papers that came with your RV. That might give you a direction to follow. My dome is made for Direct TV. You have to use a specific receiver to get reception and it costs a fee. But your antenna can pick up local channels for free.

MY suggestion is to try to find an independent RV tech to assist you rather then a dealer. I think they would be more helpful in giving you the help you need.

Hi Robin,

Welcome to the Phoenix Cruiser family.

It seems that in some cases, what you think is a problem, is actually considered normal or have relatively simple solutions.  zolman offers some great tips.  Try your best to follow his suggestions.  I will elaborate on a few of them.

About your concern of steering wander.
You say you bought a 2011 model 2551.  You did not mention miles on the odometer.  Unfortunately a brand new Ford chassis has loose steering.  A chassis with 40,000 miles will wander worse.  You either get used to it, or like us, you can invest is a few things to help reduce the floating feel.

One thing you have going for you is that model 2551 and model 2552 are two of the best PC models for lesser wandering.  Having a 2011 Ford chassis means your front and rear stabilizer bars are decent, not perfect, but better than 2007 and older.  Your bars might require adjusting to eliminate play that may have developed over the miles driven.

Assuming some of your steering handling is wear and tear, you might need new shock absorbers and a better steering stabilizer.  We have heavy duty Bilstein shocks and a Safe-T-Plus steering stabilizer which helps the wandering a lot.  You might also need a front wheel alignment.

One very important factor is making sure to put in the proper amount of air in your tires.  You won't know how much air is required until after you weigh your rig.  But there should be a Phoenix-provided tire pressure sticker inside the driver door.  Start with the numbers they recommend until you get your rig weighed when on a trip.  Too much air increases wander.  Too little air reduces fuel economy and increases the chance for a tire blow-out.  Tire pressure is a serious matter with every motor home, regardless of make or model.

Following zolman's tips, you should be able to plug into your main house, a 110v/15a outlet as long as you don't power up your air conditioner.  I recommend using your PC-supplied yellow cord and a simple 30a-to-15a adapter.  Walmart sells them for under $10.  Here is a picture of it.  This eliminates all concern of using an extension cord that is too thin of a gauge, and/or is too long.  If your yellow PC cord is too short, buy a 30a extension cord, also sold at Walmart.

Here is a nicer one, sold at Home Depot.  I like it because of the 90 degree 15a connection.  It hangs down properly from the main house wall outlet, less chance of disconnecting on it's own.

Here is a basic 30a extension cord.

Using the right cords on a 15a circuit at home, you just might be able to use your a/c unit, but not with the microwave working at the same time.  Get the basics working, then test from that point.  But it starts with the right power cords.

I don't recall if a 2011 has a Tripp-Lite whole house inverter, or the next generation Xantrax or whatever.  In either case, when plugged in, make sure the inverter/converter is turned on to maintain your batteries as well as supply 12V power to all your 12V operations in your PC.

Our 2007 has the typical crank-up roof top TV antenna and it sure is difficult capturing free air waves, so I feel your pain.  I added this contraption called a Winegard Wingman to our Winegard antenna which is supposed to improve picture quality.  Because we camp in remote locations, most often with "obstacle interference" we won't bother fussing with antenna TV.  We do love to watch DVD movies.  If we stay a while near a line-of-sight city, we will attempt antenna TV.

Since you also have a satellite dish, follow zolman's suggestions regarding a switch of some sort.

Regarding your back-up monitor, I think zolman is incorrect.  In 2011, I believe the backup monitor is in the dash board radio and is simply not working.  If you are missing the radio, then you are surly missing the monitor.

One thing certain.  This is the best place to hang out and get your PC questions answered.  Get familiar with this forum.  It will be worth your effort.

Hi Robin, welcome to the forum! I can help with a couple of your questions.

First, the Travel Club site is phoenixcruisertravelclub.org  As the President of the club I, of course, think it's absolutely wonderful and everyone should join  :-D We changed our name and website address since that first posting you saw. The new info is further down the string. We've waived dues again for 2020 so you can join without cost. Registration for our annual reunion opens with our February 15th newsletter so if you think you might be interested, join now. The 2020 Reunion will be September 20-25 in Spearfish, SD (The Black Hills).

This easiest way to navigate this forum on a regular basis is to log in then click the "new posts" icon on the main menu. There are icons for each main topic. Once you sign in the system knows which topics have been posted to since you last looked (it does not know if you actually read all the new posts under that topic, just that you opened that topic). The icon to the left of the topic changes if you have new posts to read. Click the icon not the words. It will show only the unread posts. You can change the style of your pages in your profile.

The TV/sound system and possibly whichever satellite dish you have requires different settings in the cabinet over the passenger seat. One biggie to try is the elusive red button. Open the cabinet over the passenger seat. Look for a 12 volt, cigarette lighter type outlet on the front wall (bet you didn't know you had that - you can charge things there - draws from the house batteries). There is a red button on that outlet. Try pushing it to see if you get TV reception.

Did you get a massive pile of manuals? As the rigs go down the production line and each component/appliance is installed at Phoenix, they drop that manual into a big pouch that goes to the buyer. Many owners pass that pouch on when they sell. Barry-Sue pinned a post under the "Links and Contacts" topic titled "Product Contacts" which might help. Things change quickly on the web so some might be outdated but many should work. Barry & Sue update if they know there's a bad link. For those with newer gear, they'll add links also.

Do you have a hand held voltmeter? If no, you might want one on board. You can check power at different points. We had battery issues, replaced batteries. More issues of not charging/holding a charge. Worked fine on trickle charger or solar panels connected directly to batteries. Replaced battery connectors, seemed better... Then not. Went to Phoenix to replace controller. Doug at Phoenix tested and discovered controller was fine. There was corrosion in the battery cables themselves whee they connected to the batteries. He cut them back, put copper connectors on, and our batteries work! The voltmeter would have told us that months earlier if we had checked.

Tripping breakers. This was mentioned in another post but I want to stress it - make sure your air conditioner is set to off before you plug in regardless of your hook up. If it is on and you plug in, things can trip. It is a huge power surge drawing down at one time.

You should have a basic RV book to help with all these new systems. We carry this one https://smile.amazon.com/Woodalls-Owners-Handbook-Yourself-Maintenance/dp/076275141X/ref=sr_1_9?crid=FYND3RY428NS&keywords=rv+repair+book&qid=1581433358&sprefix=Rv+repair%2Caps%2C203&sr=8-9 - Gary Bunzer/RV Doctor also has a web page http://www.rvdoctor.com that I check periodically IF we have signal. We carry FEW books due to weight but wouldn't leave this one behind. Just comprehending the electrical systems is worth the price and weight onboard. Others may chime in with different books they find helpful.

Hope this helps!
Holly

I forgot to mention the satellite dome. I'd recommend ignoring it for now. You can consider paying for a plan or removing it later (leaves holes in roof and might actually add value on resale if you leave it there). The only concern is if it adds complications to using your TV then there might be something to disconnect in that front cabinet. We don't have satellite and seldom use our TV so I'm not the best help on that... Other than the red button. Toggles between cable & over air TV I think. Can't remember if it has to be turned on/off for sound system. If something doesn't work in electronics land, I push the button and see if that fixes it. If not, I push it again to put it back the way it was. High tech!

Another forgotten item. Ron mentioned the Tripp-Lite Inverter/Converter single unit. I'm pretty sure your 2011 has separate units:
- Converter -converts AC shore power to 12V DC power for fans, lights, fridge if on propane, other 12V/DC items AND charging house batteries with what's left over
- Inverter - takes that 12V/DC power, inverts (changes) it to AC power so you can use outlets and such when you are not hooked up. You should only turn the inverter on when you are using it. Then off when done.
Both units on our 2552 are under passenger side bed. Not sure on 2350. Wherever your big electrical panel is.

Welcome Robin,
Glad you finally got online on this forum.  It is a great place to be!

Loose Steering
My 2010 2551 also had some loose steering.  I replaced the front steering stabilizer.  I did not replace it with a Safe-T-Plus model (~$800).  Just had the RV shops recommended brand. Cost less than $100.  That gave a noticeable difference and firmed up the steering.  It is not as firm as using the Safe-T-Plus but made acceptable to us.  Linda liked the better feel as well. If you look under the vehicle at the front bumper you can see it.  It looks like a shock absorber mounted horizontally.

TV Reception
I support Frazzled advice.  When trying to get over air channels push the red button in the cabinet above the passenger seat.  This is a signal booster that allows one to get channel reception. Most of us forget to turn it on sometime during a trip. Without it in on it is hard to get any reception. Also make sure the TV is set to air or antenna input.  This is usually done through the TV remote on the TV screen.

Robin, I am going to second zolman's recommendation to see an independent rv service person, pay them by the hour and have them go over everything on your rig with you - what it is, how to use it,etc.
Also, if you have a friend or neighbor with an rv ask them to go over the rig with you.   All these systems basics are pretty comparable.

Finally, I am sure there are other Phoenix Cruiser owners in your neck of the woods.  You may well be contacted by them on this forum and if you want to ask elsewhere, try rv.net forums for CLASS C.   Again, anyone with a Class C motorhome near you could help you a lot.

Verify the air conditioner or thermostat setting is switched to off whenever you connect to 110v AC at home. Most homes have 15 amp circuit breakers. That should be sufficient to power the DC converter in your motorhome, which supplies 12 volts DC to charge the batteries and run all of the electrical systems EXCEPT the air conditioner and microwave, which run on 110v AC . Those draw a lot of current and require a 30 amp electrical source.  For example, an 1100 watt microwave draws 10 amps (1100 watts divided by 110 volts). So if you attempt to run the microwave while plugged in at home, that leaves only 5 amps of additional load capacity before you overload your  home’s 15 amp circuit breaker.

If Mr. Rod has an 18mm wrench and socket it’s super easy to replace the steering stabilizer in 20 minutes. A new Monroe part for the E450 is under $50 at any auto parts store. Even though the boys have no qualms with the steering now, replace it before you venture out on a windy day. It will be the best money ever spent on your motorhome.

Back-up camera monitor problems seem to be commonplace, and apparently Phoenix used many different makes and models, many obsolete now. It’s very likely that your back-up camera and satellite antennae were installed by a previous owner., but IMHO it’s still lame that CI wouldn’t help. If the  monitor is built in to your stereo/ head unit it might be more feasible to just get a new wireless back up camera and monitor instead.

Even if you are not big DIY types, it’s good to have some basic electrical and home repair knowledge, and carry common hand tools and a  digital volt-ohm multimeter when venturing far from home. YouTube is always the go-to place for troubleshooting problems.  Buy a roadside assistance and towing policy for all  the other (automotive) stuff.

As Ron questioned, it is important to know the miles on the chassis before responding to the sloppy steering. There are components in the front suspension that can be dangerous if loose or damaged.

As to the sattellite antennae on top, if it is like mine there are dip switches under the dome that can be set for different TV providers. We chose a Dish Wally as it is $8 per month (with Dish home service) and can be suspended anytime.

I shocked that Campers Inn did not resolve all of the issues. Was it bought "as is"? There should have been some type of warranty for you. It is a drive, but I'd travel to Elkhart and see Doug. Express your displeasure with CI and their follow through.
Thes things should be fixed or at least explained in detail, all to your satisfaction.

One more thing.  If you haven’t already, please have a good repair facility check the brakes. Have them remove tires and inspect all brake components.  It costs about $300 but worth it.  Equipment like brakes on RVs that are older and have low miles can deteriorate a lot quicker then ones used frequently.

Enjoy!

Seconded!  A visual inspection will warn of the obvious, but many components look good on the outside and may not be working correctly inside.

A brake fluid flush is recommended. Supposed to be every 2 years....most often is ignored.  My 2006 was almost black.

Soon after I started driving mine, I had a front caliper lock up from lack of use. Lucky I made it home... the wheel was hot. It was not the flex line internally stopped up (also common...) but the caliper itself.

I am suspecting that my rear calipers are not working properly. I have not flushed them yet (BAD owner I am....Should have done it last tire rotation, but ran short on time...) and sometimes stopping on wet roads, the front brakes ABS deploys.  They are up next. Using the trailer brakes made for MUCH better stopping, so I am doubly suspicious of the rear not working well.

Putting a brake fluid flush on the 'to do ' list can be some good preventative maintenance.  The DOT code on the tires can tell you how old they are also. They can look great after 7 years, but not be 'long trip' worthy.

If it is built on a 2006 or older E350 chassis as I think they are, you don't have a rear stabilizer bar (unless added by a previous owner).  I advise to look under your rig and see if one is back there.  If not, install a heavy duty Helwig, and also install a front Helwig in place of the tired stock front stabilizer bar.  That will be the best $500 you will have ever spent.  The installation is not difficult for a do-it-yourselfer, but if you are not up to the task, a mechanic can do it for an additional charge.  You will greatly appreciate the improvement in handling, driver and passenger comfort, and over-all much safer driving.

Wow!  I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for all of you responding to my questions!!  I will let my husband read through all of this valuable information and see if we can figure out more stuff.  The mileage on the Ford E450 was under 10,000, and that was part of the problem with all the stuff that wasn't working - sat too long unused.  I'll have to check what it is now, but probably around a 1,000 more.  The RV has the backup camera installed on the rear, but inside there is no monitor.  Where the radio is located on the dash is a black rectangle "cover" and that is where Camper's Inn said the monitor would go.  (There definitely is no monitor on the visor.)  We definitely did not purchase this RV "as is".  We were in communication with Camper's Inn via email and phone.  They agreed to have the RV in excellent working order and they had ten days from the deal to our arrival.  They did absolutely nothing except put on new tires which we paid for.  You wouldn't believe the problems we had just on the trip home to Texas from Florida.  But that's another story.  We got most everything fixed locally and Camper's Inn did pay for it. -- Well, I started this a few hours ago, but had to leave.  I'm going to have to study all of this info, along with husband, and try out these suggestions.  I sincerely thank you all for taking the time to help!  I'll keep you updated.  Robin
