Northwest get-together in 2020?
« on: February 06, 2020, 12:27:44 am »
Is there a place on this site to find out where there are group events so we can meet each other?

I'm going to give this one a go but it's a bit convoluted as several things need explanation.

-This Factory Forum has two main menu topics "Adventure Anywhere" and "Around the Campfire" where it might make sense to post a subject like you just did and see who is interested (though this string here works also). You may wind up with a bit of topic wandering but I've seen the Florida folks pull it off several times.

- Phoenix Cruiser Travel Club (PCTC) is an owners club, no dues at this time (and the foreseeable future). Accused of being "exclusive" which I guess we are because you have to join to be a member. We ask just enough info to get by-monthly newsletters to you and occasional info updates. We don't share info. We are run by members. www.phoenixcruisertravelclub.org We have an annual member reunion each year. This year will be Spearfish SD. Next year is somewhere in central time zone.

- RVillage.com is run by an outside organization. RVillage is a get-together program that PCTC (travel club) recently set up a private group on. Yes, our RVillage group is also exclusive - you have to be a member of PCTC to join the group. We locked the group because we are extremely cautious about member information getting out. Free to join RVillage. Free to join the PCTC group. Bill Golden has a northeast get-together planned on there and I hope to set one up for the northwest this spring or summer. Not many members are on RVillage yet (39). It is a little clunky to work with but not bad once you get on there. One major irritant is notifications. You have to be ruthless in turning them off to avoid getting inundated with emails or texts. Then it works fine.

- RVillage OPEN group. If you truly don't want to join PCTC, there is an open group on RVillage called Phoenix Cruiser. This means EVERYTHING you post is public and feeds to the main RVillage page. But you could set up gatherings there.

That was the technical post. Now for the personal post.

We are headed to the northwest in April. We received confirmation on a volunteer job at North Cascades Visitor Center. We'll be rolling North mid-April; working 4 days a week April 27- early September; then rolling east for our PCTC Spearfish reunion.

I'm totally up for a get together either before we roll into our post deep in the mountains or while we are there. We'll be near the Newhalem campground.

Nwcamper, if you are setting something up and we can get there, we're in! If you aren't setting something up, I can give it a go. Are you in the western part of Washington or Oregon?

Are there other northwest people interested in a get-together? (Or non-northwest people willing to play in a beautiful area of the country?)

Welcome to yes, this beautiful part of the country.  I've been where  you will be volunteering.  I'm in eastern WA.  April is early for me since it can snow and we certainly get frost then.  June, July,August, even Sept can work here.  Steamboat Rock State Park is in the middle of WA.  Sept is a great time to do that since summer it's pretty full except maybe during the week.  In north Idaho is FarragutSstate Park north of Coeur d'Alene.  Maybe others can suggest places to play for a couple of days.

August is the latest we can do as we'll be working Labor Day then making a mad dash for the Travel Club Reunion in Spearfish SD mid-September (9/20-25/2020). It sounds like summer is best. So yes, please, bring on the suggestions and let us know if anyone is interested in joining.

We have a cabin just across the NC Highway in Mazama WA.  Travel Rt 20 east/west a lot.

Will have to stop and see your rig sometime.

I am sure you have checked this out.  Its 16 miles to the nearest gas station and 7/11 type store, and 32 miles to a full size supermarket :-D

We'd love to see you!

Yes on groceries. We mapped it before we applied and the rangers were very clear in our phone interview that everything was a good distance away. It will be 90 minutes one way to major stores, Walmart, Costco, etc. We're already making lists of meals made from shelf stable foods and bought spare reading glasses (I'll create another string asking for meal ideas). We're going to miss our frequent salads if no local (ish) farms sell produce but we'll survive. I can make pine needle tea to get our vitamin C to avoid scurvy (hah, just joking, we'll buy supplements, dried food and canned goods to cover all bases)!

We're also watching to see how often we need new items (toothpaste, deodorant, soap, tp, paper towels, etc.) John will get a three month supply of meds before we roll in. So, planning is in progress and we're prepared to do without if needed. We've backpacked before so we know how to make do. There is a small convenience store in Newhalem that will hopefully have a few items to fill any gaps.

Right the country store in Newhalem does carry a few items of essentials.  Its pretty quiet in that neck of the woods until the NC highway opens which should be between April 25th and May 2nd this year.  Newhalem, which is a true factory town for Seattle Light, gets very busy starting mid to end of May thru mid Sept.  Marblemount WA is about 20 mins west and has a couple of country type restaurants, and a great organic beef ranch...if your into beef.   https://americanalpsranch.com     2o2  Have fun.

The North Cascade Highway just had the snow removal inspection this week.  They start clearing on Monday March 23 from the east side. A week later from the west side.  Snows depths pretty much average up in the pass, but lower then average at lower altitudes.  Usually takes 5-6 weeks to clear the 33 mile section.

They carry a stuffed rescue dog?

We are camping in Newhalem which is only at 500 feet altitude. My understanding is that the road is open from the west to that point. We received notice our campsite will be ready April 24th so we hope to roll in then and be ready to start training Monday the 27th.

Right.  The little village of Newhalem gets very little snow.  The highway is actually open another 10 miles east of town in the winter to service Seattle lights dams.

The dog is actually a goat.  Mascot for the avalanche team.  Mountain goat herds still roam the higher eastern elevations of the Cascades in that area.
