Another SurgeGuard Question
« on: December 26, 2019, 05:45:50 pm »
Don't want to hijack the previous thread so here's my question:
Anyone switch out a hardwired Surgeguard in exchange for a Progressive Industries EMS instead?  Was it no big deal?
Also, how did it work as far as switching the remote display panel?  Was that easily done or a pain in the neck?  (On my 2351 the EMS is under the bed in the rear corner and the display panel is way up on the wall behind the driver's seat, so am hoping it's easy to switch one display panel for the other using existing wiring.)
My Surgeguard is about to die and I like the Progressive Ind's bypass feature, which Surgeguard does not have.
Thank you!

I have not switched anything out so this is just my guess.  But I do not think it would be a difficult job to switch the EMS units themselves.  Assuming there is enough wire to reach the Progressive lugs.  No way to know that without having both in hand to compare them.

The hard part would be wiring the display.  I'm not positive but I think the Progressive EMS uses a 4 pair cable like is used for computer networks.  I think it even uses the same connector (RJ45), the manual just says "data cable" and the picture looks correct for an RJ45 but I cannot be sure.    So what you need to know is what wire and connector the SurgeGard uses.  If the wire is compatible then at worst you would need to replace the connectors or hard-wire it.  If the wire is not compatible then pulling new wire from the EMS to the location of the display is a pain.  Not impossible or even particularly difficult, just tedious with a lot of time on your back under the coach.

I'd just abandon the old display and put the new one where you could easily wire it. They are likely not compatible anyway (scrolling, switching, etc.) Just a guess...

Ps...put it where the scrolling display will not offend you at night, I wish it could be turned off.

It sounds like the best spot for the display would be inside the house door, sink side, where the step button is. That would be easy to run the wire from under the bed. Your heat and water run through there so you have an opening. I'd zip tie your wires up to something so they aren't on the floor if you get water incursion. Maybe eye hooks at least an inch or two up in the framework to zip tie to.
