Ultra leather
« on: November 11, 2019, 12:42:12 pm »
I’ve seen the poll about damage, but there must be a lot more failures than are reported.  I’m still seeking a 2552.  Money wise from around 2011 on.  I’ve personally looked at 2 and have seen pics of at least 2 others on rvtrader that show and or report damage due to flaking.  We have a personal friend who only does classic auto interiors, and we’ve show him pics of what needs to be replaced.  He’s redone everything in my current chinook.  He’s estimated $3-4K to replace using a heavy duty vinyl type material.    So my question is, what year would be safe to begin looking at to avoid this problem.  One 2012 year 2552 that I was very interested in claims there was no damage, but I didn’t get to inspect it.  Was it a particular color material that was more to blame than another, or just everything in the 3-4 year period?

Hello
I saw a 2017 2552 at Campers Inn in Leesburg that the interior looked a little rough. The Ultra Leather was worn down to the threads. It almost put me off from buying the one I found up in Vermont. The Ultra Leather in my 2017 looks good, no wear. If you go online and look at the one at Campers Inn in Leesburg its the same color as mine, but the pictures really does not show the poor condition of the material. When i got there I was very disappointed and a patch job was done on the vinyl floor along with the carbon fiber dash faded out. Looked like it was much older than it was.

Looking at the poll it appears 2010, 2011 and 2012 were the worst years. I don't have any idea if any one color was worse than another. I have a 2012 model 3100 with the tan interior. All looked good until 2018 then suddenly it started flaking mostly on the driver and passenger seats. Later the couch started but not as bad. I live near the factory and was there having some maintenance done. I spoke with Carol and Doug about having the drivers seat, passenger seat, couch and dinette recovered. They recommended real leather on all seating surfaces and vinyl on sides and back to reduce cost. The cost was $2895.00. I liked the quality of the product they showed me and the color was great. I'm very pleased with how the finished product looks. I paid a little extra for new foam padding which is firmer and more comfortable in my opinion. We'll see how the new product wears. I'll post again after we use for a while.

Ok, so now I’m seeing 2016-17 that are experiencing the flaking problem.  I’m guessing sun/uv exposure would be the leading cause of failure.  The 2552 that I didn’t get to see claims to be perfect on the fabric, but it did live under a roof for its entire life.  The unit I drove 462 miles to see had some of its upholstery replaced, but it also had gouging where the slide out rollers were.

I have a 2015 (2551) with the ultra leather on the driver and passenger seats and on the sofa bed.

The sofa bed is perfect.  The passenger seat is perfect but the driver's seat has a small area on the inside seat back that has started to flake.

We use an Adco windshield cover while it in storage and a Magna shade when it's parked at a campground.

So.. It's not from sunlight, I believe it's just poor quality "fabric"

This is my "speculation" as to the reason for the flaking problem.

After the great recession of 2008/2010, as has happened with many other RV-specific things from water heaters to cabinet door latches, the vinyl has since been imported from China.

Along the subject line. Out here it’s going to cost me a grand to have the 2 seats redone. Has anyone found any decent fitting seat covers?

Ron, from the responses I’ve seen on my post, it looks like your poll on subject needs to be revitalized and brought to the forefront.

Our 2013 model 2350 is ultraleather is perfect, not a blemish.  It has never been stored anywhere but in an enclosed garage away from all sunlight and maybe that is helpful to preserving it.   Since so many on this forum have had problems, I pay careful attention to ours and look for trouble but so far.....no problems.

The reality is.... the PC advertised material called "ultra leather"  is a cheap imitation vinyl, not the trade marked Ultra Leather material. A lot of buyers paid extra for a material that is not anything other than a horrible grade vinyl. I believe the brand was "Halo" not sure of its origination, but Ron probably has it correct. A quick price check puts the PC (Halo) ultraleather at around $5/yard. The real deal UltraleatherTM  can run up to $100/yard. Most buyers would be much happier with standard, no extra charge cloth. I hope the new option of "Leather" is actually something that will be an asset, but like man made materials there is a huge quality range of "Leather", some good some not.
The trade marked Ultraleather company has been around a long time, they appear to stand by their products. Verbage can make profits for a company like PC, and lots of unhappy customers. If I were to be looking at a used PC I would steer away from their ultraleather, of at least expect to have to live with poor quality upholstery, or figure in a reasonable amount for replacement. Sorry, just the facts, and a some opinion.

We have a 2011 2552 we bought it last April with 22k on it. Very "lightly" used. . Flakeing was noted own all the seats. It got so bad we have bought seat covers for the driver and pass .seat. and the couch has been replaced. with a new recliner model with no issues there. We were very unhappy with the "ultra leather" and call it  Ultra-Flake lether
