Houghton AC question...
« on: August 18, 2019, 07:39:53 pm »
Joseph: In another thread, you made a comment about the Houghton's balanced fans and that they "throw a code" if operated while driving down the highway.
Is this something you experienced and have you had any communications with Advanced about it?
Wondering if the excess airflow from driving is reducing the head pressure too much or if it is an issue with the fan itself?
Any info you could point me to would be greatly appreciated.
I recently had two Houghton units delivered to the PC factory for installation on my new RV.

One drawback PC noted is that due to the lack of wall thermostat, (Houghton uses a remote) they could not come up with a way to make it work with my Auto Gen Start.
They even called Advanced who said they could not support it.
I asked them to just run the wires they usually would run for a Dometic and I will find a way to make it work if needed. (after the Advanced RV warranty period   :lol)

Thanks!   tymote Jim Godfrey

That’s info direct from Frank, their shop manager.  Basically the air speed moving the fans while driving at highway speeds would affect the fans balanced speed.  I’m sure he would explain it better but that’s the jist of it. He did say it wouldn’t hurt the unit, just wouldn’t work.  How it come up in conversation is when I saw a advanced rv unit that had another brand installed. Not sure of the  brand but it might have been Coleman. Frank told me in cases where people want to run their roof ac while driving the houghton wouldn’t be the best choice.   In my case that’s not an issue however I have read where owners of larger rigs need to run the roof ac while under way.

Hope that’s helps

One other note.  Frank told me to always shut down the ac when switching from gen to shore power or vice versa. I believe that has something to do with the soft start and soft shut down but I can’t swear to that. I just recall him telling me that so I make sure to follow that procedure.

As an owner for 14 years (for another week) of a 42 foot diesel pusher I agree the bigger units have to use the A/C on generator on the road. The dash air is simply too inefficient. Good info on which PC units work better when driving. I also agree you should shut down the A/C when switching between generator and shore power. Even if you have an energy management system which should allow you to leave the A/C on, not always 100% reliable.
