One big negative with Silicone sealants is if it has to be resealed in the future most if not all sealants (including Silicone) will not properly bond to the old Silicone. It is very difficult to remove all traces of old Silicone.  Many experienced RV and boat maintenance personnel do not want to use Silicone for any purpose.

This is a comparison of various sealants.  If the parts being sealed will undergo small movements due to flexing etc. one should pay attention to the elongation test data.

Volkemon, agree with much of your post.  35 years of cruising and 15 years full time liveaboard it was my general observation that boat builders often used 5200 as a product that covered many applications it was not really made for, but it could cover-up lots poor design.  I have worked on far too many boats where a simple repair turned into a nightmare.  Like so many things 5200 is a good product if used in it's designed application.
