Anyone know where this wire goes ?
« on: April 07, 2019, 11:20:03 am »
Newbie here just wondering where this and what this wire is. I think it is a ground wire for the Generator. I was looking under my new to us coach and saw this wire hanging down. I seems to originate from the generator. I think I just need to bolt to the frame? please help  (2011 2552 coach)

Red wires usually indicate hot. Check voltage on wire before you terminate. Did you run generator?
With generator running check voltage again.

It is Back wire and the picture is 90 degrees from true. I will try to repost the pictures. I bolted it to the frame and can not start the Gen. until I get some Propane the tank is at zero

I fixed the picture so it is in the correct orientation. It is the Black wire I was just hanging there I bolted it to the frame. I hope that was the correct thing to do. also there seems to be a lot of Zib ties holding cabling under my rig. is this normal?

Hi Rob & Lisa,

Only the Sprinter chassis generator runs off propane.  The Ford E350 and E450 chassis generator runs off the same gasoline as the main engine, but you need your 55 gallon gas tank to be 1/4 to 1/3 full to run the generator.  Make sure you have at least that much gas in the tank.  The idea behind the limit is to prevent running your generator to the point that you run out of gasoline, disabling your rig.

It sure does appear that wire should be grounded to the chassis, but I cannot say for certain.  I would try running the generator first with that wire disconnected to see what is not working right.  Then turn off the generator, connect that wire to the chassis and see the difference if any.

If your generator turns over but won't run, press and hold in the "prime" position on the start button.  It does not start to prime until after the light comes on, so continue to hold it in for 10 seconds after the light comes on before trying to start.  Repeat as necessary.

If your generator runs but is not generating any electricity, it could be that ground wire.  It could also be that you need to hit the reset switch, accessed with the Onan generator cover removed.  If you over-load the generator, that reset switch will "trip".  It happens more often than you think, so get familiar with it.

With the cover removed, you will also see a duplicate "Start" switch identical to the start switch inside your PC.  You can prime the carburetor and start your generator right there.

Also on the generator is an altitude adjustment.  Set it to the approximate altitude for smoothest operation and fuel efficiency.  Here is a picture of the altitude adjustment.

Get familiar with your generator cover because there will always be a reason to remove and re-install it.  When reinstalling the cover, MAKE SURE you INSTALL IT PROPERLY or it will fall off and be left behind on a road.  The generator will eventually overheat with the cover missing, so "DON'T LOOSE THAT COVER".  A new cover is very expensive to replace so make sure it is "seated" on the generator itself, not the support structure holding the generator.  And make sure to turn the two black levers to lock it into place.  Pull on the two levers when you think you have it right to confirm the cover is properly installed.

As far as "wire ties" are concerned, there are some being used under our 2007-2350 rig.

I should also say...

If connecting that big ground wire to the chassis, clean it up, get all the rust and corrosion off it and also off the bolt used to screw it on, and also the chassis surface it is pressed against.  Once cleaned up, grease them up a little before bolting the wire on for corrosion protection.  You want a "Best & Lasting" ground connection.

That is a surge protector readout box.  It prevents spikes and surges from killing your electronics.    It should also tell you the voltage from the park pedestal, whether the pedestal is wired correctly, etc.

The black wire is indeed the ground wire for the generator's starter and the ground for it's AC output.  It is a safety feature, the generator is also grounded via the frame it sits in.

Progressive industry electrical management system https://www.progressiveindustries.net/ems-hw30c info and link to user manual here.

Note: if the power at the post is bad (too high, too low, open ground) the EMS will not allow electricity through to the RV as those conditions can damage the appliances and electrical systems in the rig.

You are looking at the user interface. I suspect the main unit may be under one of the beds.

When connected to ac power the  display srolls at 2 second intervals the voltage, current, and error codes if any. That is if your surge protector is a 3 mode unit. When initially connected there is an apx 2 min delay as the protector runs through it's checking routine. Hope this helps

The Progressive is best you can buy, sell or return the other one.
After you read the manual print this. It is a list of error codes for the EMS.
     Error code Chart
E-0 -- Normal condition
E-1 -- Reverse polarity condition
E-2 -- Open Ground
E-3 -- Line 1 Voltage High above 132
E-4 -- Line 1 Voltage Low below 104

You don't need the second one. It just adds to your set up time. I asked Kermit to install a hard wired Progressive Industries when we ordered our rig in2013 and he said they would have to put it under the rig. I said no and we got the one we hang on the post. Not too long after that he figured out how to make it work and they started installing in the rig. Hard wired is definitely the way to go. No fuss, no muss, no extra parts to hook up each time and lock down so nobody steals it.

Sigh, maybe someday.

When we ordered our 2552 because of quoted price and brand offered by Phoenix, I decided to purchase the motorhome without the EMS.  I ordered the Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C and installed it underneath the passenger side bed.  This enabled monitoring power from either shore or generator depending on which was being used at the time.  The remote readout was mounted on the sink cabinet as one enters the coach.  At this location when one is connecting to shore power the status is easily read without the need to enter the coach.

Over the almost three years of use it has shutdown the incoming shore power due to low voltage and ground issues on several occasions.  Can’t say for sure but it possibly prevented damage to the electrical system as well as prevented an unsafe condition.  At the time of purchase Progressive Industries had an excellent reputation for service after the sale.  Fortunately I have not needed to call on their help.  I hope they have continued to maintain their excellent service reputation.
