Newbie with lots of questions Says thank you advance.
« on: April 06, 2019, 12:40:15 am »
Just picked up our new to use 2011 2525 with very little knowledge of the systems, I had a Class A Safri Trek many moons ago so I have some experience but the 2552 is a different animal for sure. My wife and I just retired after 40 years in  FireFighting  EMS and Nursing. We will be full-timers as we just sold the house. I came across this RV and new it was the one for us only 22K miles and very lightly used. The engine block was still clean. Everything looks new. The shore power cord as a 110- 3 prong outlet I am plugging into the RV park power box. I am thinking I need a 30 amp Male connector is better than the 110-3prong is that correct?  WIll using the 110v limit the number of things I can use on shore power?

Welcome @romstead!

If you have questions or need help ask away.  Somebody here will have an answer.

A 110v 15amp 3 prong end on your power cord is very odd for sure.  That coach should come with a 110v 30 amp cord.  Possibly even a 50 amp but that would be special order.  Is there an adapter on the end of the power cord?  Or sign that it has been modified in any way?

If you can post some pictures of the cord, both ends.  I am wondering if that is a replacement cord that was designed for parking someplace that only had 15 amp receptacles.

The 30 amp plug should look something like this: Amazon 30 Amp Plug

I have a 50 amp coach but I always carry adapters that allow me to plug into 30 amp and 15 amp receptacles if needed.

Jtrax summed it up nicely.  I'm wondering if there is a 15 amp dog bone on the power cord?  I cannot imagine ANY RV with a 15 amp cord.

If your 2552 has two air conditioners, it is definitely a 50 amp rig.

I hope you enjoy full-timing.  We did it for 10 years and loved it, but I always say...10 years was enough.

Cheers  :)(:

@romstead I just noticed that you are based in Indiana.  If it were me I would take a drive over to the factory with your coach and ask them to go over it for you and explain everything.  Call ahead and get an appointment.  The folks there are great and always love seeing coaches come in.

We stopped in last summer for a couple of repairs and they went over everything and fixed things I did not know were wrong.

Might cost you a couple hours of service labor, but well worth it in my opinion.

Perhaps you are just  confusing 30A vs 50A male  connectors?
I have a 15A adapter for plugging my 30A cord into a standard 110V 15A residential outlet. You can’t even run the  air conditioner on a 15A circuit breaker.

Ok, I feel really dumb.  :-D A three prong 110v adapter was added to the 30 amp shore power cord,  I did not realize it was an add on to be used when 30 amp service is not available MY BAD The learning curve continues.

Ok here is another question. When I plug my shore power in 30amp do I need to turn on a converter on hat bypasses the house batteries. I see the house battery light switch on with a red light in the entry door step well. In my Class A I had to switch to Shore power after plugging in the shore power to the RV power box and will all my outlets work on shore power

I thought it may have been a dog bone!

The transfer switch should take care of all "switch overs".  Just plug and play.

another newbie question, Before I unplug the shore power to the RV and leave my RV site, should I turn off all the accessories drawing power and start the motor of the coach before I unplug the shore power. is there a sequence to follow or precautions to follow before unplugging from shore power.

Not that it's wrong or right, but I generally turn off anything using power, fill the breaker to OFF, unplug the coach, then disconnect from the power pole. No need to start the engine, IMHO.
Just my silly habit. But haven't had an issue yet.

The few times we stay where there is shore power, we typically unplug from the power pole as one of our last to-do's.  At that point, everything running on 110V is turned off, but a few 12V things are left on like the fridge and maybe some interior lighting.

Regarding the little red light by the entry door.  Before leaving home, I place a Post-It over the kill switch saying "Keep On".  It stays on until we return back home.  If switched off, the fridge shuts down.  Our instinct is to turn it off when leaving the rig for the day.  The Post-It covering that switch is our reminder to leave it on.

With our older Tripp-Lite whole house inverter, it stays off until inverted 110V is needed.  When we are done with 110V, we turn it off again to retain our battery reserves better.  We almost exclusively camp without shore power so we pay close attention to unnecessary power consumption for better health of our house batteries.

We turn things off for two reasons:
1 - prevent a heavy load on the batteries if something is running off 12v directly or via inverter outlets (we keep our inverter off so this is being double sure)
2 - prevent a heavy load on the electrical system when we plug in again.

This is just our way. We've had the shore power go out then come back on with no issues, but again, our inverter is off unless we are using it so no big loads hit the batteries.

Note: once you get your generator going you want to follow the same "gentle" load reduction. Turn off all big items before starting or stopping the generator (electric heat, ac, etc - not the fridge, leave it on automatic - it will switch). We let the genny "smooth out" before putting a load on her.

It sounds to me like everybody is missing the OP's critical point of confusion.

ROMSTEAD, the big 30 amp umbilical cable with the big 3-prong plug is 110 VOLTS ONLY.  Do NOT attempt to convert it to a 30amp 220 plug and plug it into any 220V service!

That little 15a adapter you have doesn't convert 220 to 110, it merely adapts a 110 volt, 30amp RV plug to an ordinary 15/20a house-type plug.  15 to 20amps is plenty when you just need to keep the batteries charged and the fridge cold.  You need 30amp service to run the A/C, hot water heater, or Microwave.

All RV's use 110, unless they have a 50a plug.

Thank you all for your help. I am running on 30amp shore power now and will shut everything down before I turn the breaker to off the unplug and leave the house batteries on. Thanks so much

The only thing you need to do, is turn 30 amp breaker on the post. Then unplug.

Never turn off the switch by the door or you batteries won't charge.
