Info on 5G
« on: January 28, 2019, 11:39:17 am »
Here is a technical article on upcoming 5G network that eventually replaces current 4G.  A lot of mumbojumbo. But some may find it interesting.  Probably want to wait before getting new phone with 5G until it is more widespread.

Are  any of you Cruisers video streaming using a phone as a WiFi hotspot tethered to a smart tv? With a reliable unlimited data plan HULU live tv with cloud dvr could be an ideal solution.

I read somewhere that living near multiple 5G transmitters has health concerns.  CLICK HERE to read one such article.  It has me wondering about the phone itself.

We've tried it that last couple of times out, with mixed success.  The problem you discover is that 4G internet bandwidth varies wildly from minute to minute, especially if you don't happen to be on the best supported network in the area.  We had fits with AT&T on our recent Florida trip, just surfing the internet on our laptops.  Occasionally, we were able to watch DirectTVNow over the hotspot.  But even then, there was a lot of buffering.  Everyone there told us that Verizon works better in Florida.  But on another trip to South Padre last year, the Firestick worked pretty good with a hot spot here in Texas.

By the way, if you're on AT&T watching DirectTVNow, it doesn't count against your data minutes.  I called before the Florida trip and they verified that they don't charge for DirectTVNow minutes, even if you're using your phone's hotspot to watch it on TV through a Firestick.  And another tip -- Amazon Firestick works much better with limited bandwidth than a Smart TV alone.  Not sure why, but we've got a slow DSL connection at home, and when we unplugged from cable, we discovered that only a Firestick was fast enough to work with our lousy bandwidth.

Our 2350 was equipped with the satellite dish system/receiver that we had no interest in activating so I de-installed it and swapped out the factory Samsung for a TCL 1080p Roku TV (mounting it on a functional extending swivel!) this past year.  We have a multi-use 4g tablet (GPS, text/email/etc) with unlimited data plan  that we use as hotspot for streaming to Roku. Unless we're WAY off the grid we have satisfactory connection and only rarely encounter buffering.  As a side note, we've NEVER found a campground wi-fi access sufficient to stream due to signal/bandwidth availability,  we rarely bother to connect and avoid the security risk inherent with public wi-fi.
