Ford E-series not going away
« on: October 15, 2018, 07:50:09 pm »
Wonder if it's because of a reprieve from the EPA or continued strong  demand? Back in 2014 Ford stated that production would continue until the end of this decade.

Cal, think it's the demand.  See the below excerpt from the Ford media release that you linked:

"Commercial vehicles: Ford, the only full-line brand with offerings that stretch from Class 1 to Class 7, has a commanding 38 percent share of the U.S. commercial vehicle market. Last year, it sold more CVs than the second, third and fourth place competitors combined."

There is still a LOT of demand for the E series cutaway and stripped chassis units, and there's not really anything that currently replaces them.  When you think of the alternate popular platforms in just the RV industry, Mercedes, Transit, Dodge, etc; they can handle the lighter duty demands, but fall short of the heavier requirements.  There is very little filling the gap between the light B+ applications and the Super C's besides the 350's and 450's.  Add all the ambulance, safety, and commercial applications and Ford has a really BIG market.  If they drop the E series, what are they going to use to fill the gap?

I wonder if the Trump administration relaxing the CAFE numbers back to pre-Obama, influenced Ford's position.  But I also wonder if the cut-away and stripped chassis do not formulate into CAFE.  Being that these particular chassis are also used as commercial vehicles (serious trucks and such), they might not negatively impact Ford's "Corporate Average Fuel Economy" for passenger vehicles.

Regardless, mikeh makes an excellent point.

Actually, the article states 'Extend production of its E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis into the 2020s'.... so into the next decade!

I hope it holds true. A few years back they stopped production of the Lincoln Town car and the livery services across the country went nuts. They couldn’t use the Cadillac’s as they simply didn’t hold up and the engines were shot at 150,000 not including never ending idling hours. Any way Ford repented and started the line back up.  The CEO Alan Mullaly retired and within two years the stopped production of the town cars for good. Obviously it wasn’t the CEO who solely made the decision as those matters go to the BOD. It all comes down to profits, period.

Lots of Livery services out here in the resorts and I’ve noticed they are all changing out from E series to F series for the luxury 24 etc passenger vehicles.  Only time will tell.

Hi , new around here and doing research on the Cruisers , particularly 2551..so far . In all the looking around it seems like the cutaway will be around for awhile . Confusion out there looks to be around the motor , V-10 is being retired , but the chatter seems to indicate otherwise .  IT IS going away plain and simple , don't see what people are going all around the issue for !  Anyhow , can't wait to see how they gear it and the transmission , looks like there is a 8 speed revolving around it . By the time we get our van build figured out , hopefully early next year , the V-8 should be on the new 350 & 450's . Just can't wait to check out a PC in person !

Source for that? I found nothing on the retiring of this motor. Seems to still be a strong contender in the motorhome/cutaway market.

Yeah, the V8 has more hp ,+30, but at 5500 RPM (~1250 RPM higher than the V10!) and 15% less torque at 750 RPM higher..(cutaway specs, superduty and raptor have more power..)

Sorry about not clarifying " next year " meaning 2020 models !  Ford is replacing the 6.8 V-10 with the 7.3 V-8 . Info came out almost a year ago but has now been confirmed , there are a few articles and utubers about it . Exact HP and transmission aren't available for specific models , will vary with application I guess but a 10 speed trans looks to be the norm especially across F series . Thanks !

The pushrod 7.3 rumor makes sense. It seems doubtful that a DOHC 7.0 would fit in the E-series engine bay, given that the 3v cylinder head version of the 6.8 does not.

Thank You!  The 7.3 reference revealed a lot of info. :)  Glad I have the V10 in my old beast, it is a well sorted out engine in the post-2005 models. :) I am sure they will sort out the new 7.3 also. Not sure I would want to order one in the first few years of production, however. Moot point, as we are not going to be buying new for a few years.  :lol  But post-retirement plans do call for a new PC....maybe a bit longer than our 2350. Mrs V wants a walk around bed. .. We will see in 8 years.  2o2
