A/C Has No Auto/On Option

New to me 2011 2551. The thermostat is an odd little white thing with LEDs down the left side. The main button at the bottom cycles through the selections.

There is no Auto/On option and the fan runs constantly. Is this designed this way?

I'd like to change the thermostat to a model that has the Auto/On option if that will allow the fan to stop after the compressor cycles off.

Anyone know if the 2551 A/C is capable of this without running new wiring? I'm pretty sure this is the stock A/C and thermostat.

Welcome to the forum.  My thermostat is brown and does have the auto selection that you desire.  Surely someone will be along soon to address your dilemma.  Phoenix has a how to video on their site that may be of some assistance but it covers the brown thermostat.    Larry

It's this your thermostat? I can't help, the brown one was standard by 2013.

Here in the way back machine (2006) this is the thermostat.

Controls furnace only. on/off switch at the top. 2 wire connection IIRC, so no capability for fan only.

Here is the one Phoenix installed back in 2007.  We have it and really like it for it's simplistic approach.  It is very straight forward, easy to adjust while under the blankets in bed, in the dark with my eyes closed.  Sometimes we'll wake up in the middle of the night a bit too cold.  I just raise the slider until the furnace kicks on.

Under the first step on the left side, should be labeled FAN

Use the + or - buttons on the right to cycle the fan option to HI or Lo or Au. The Au position is Auto.   The other are High fan always and low fan always.

If the inside is 7 degrees (or more) above the temp setting, the fan will run at the high setting until the inside gets to less than 7 degrees hotter than the thermostat setting.  No matter what.. If you have the fan set to High, it will always run at high speed no matter what.  In the high and low settings, the fan is always on, only the compressor cycles off/on

Auto setting the fan only runs when cooling is called for.

Also, be aware that there is an ice sensor the will shut off the compressor (but not the fan) until that sensor detects no more ice.

I had a thermostat like in Ron's picture on an RV several years ago.  I found it superior to the "modern" thermostat in my 2013 PC for the reason that it was simply simple.   Maybe SIMPLE is better than COMPLEX?
   
The original thermostat installed when our home was built twenty-one years ago was a simple Honeywell with a "Day" and "Night" setting with a simple clock to set the appropriate times.   It was great!  A near by lightning strike got into our wiring two years ago and zapped the thermostat.   I replaced it with a simple digital thermostat with a setting for heat and one for air.   No timer.  No nuthin'.   It works great.   That was after I had bought and gave away one of those programmable models with a jillion settings for each day of the week.   

I have come to the conclusion that often  less is more.    Sometimes and maybe pretty darn often.

We have the same thermostat Thru. Don described it perfectly. One more tip. Press the big bottom center button until the LED lights there, then hit the minus button on the right. The display will show you the temperature the thermostat is reading. Click the bottom button again to return to Cool. My A/C kept running long after I thought it should. I checked the temp as above and found it had not reached my set point. I bumped up the set point temp a couple of degrees and it shut off as it should. The thermostat could be in the sun, the rear louvers on A/C not open, a hot shower; several things may be happening to warm the thermostat.
