Compartment Keys
« on: September 24, 2018, 07:22:30 am »
When we picked up our 2910D in June of this year, Phoenix did not have keys for the two, black plastic latched compartments - one on the rear and and one on the right side rear.  I contacted Phoenix and they very quickly (thank you very much!) mailed out a set of black keys that don't work.  The latch key holes have a marking that appears to be a "W" or "M" depending on how you look at it.  If someone has the same latch marking and a key, could you possibly supply me with the key number so I can get back with Phoenix and get the correct key?  Thanks in advance!

Mike,
My key says "Kencon" and the number is "CK330".  Not sure if that is the same as yours or not though.  They might not all be the same.  Or they might have changed latches since mine was built.

Jack is what we call our PC 2351D, and he has taken us from campers to RV'ers and loving it. We're no longer Team Bob. Just Jack the RV!

Mike,

I think we probably have the same locks as you do on those compartments.  They have a letter M on them.  The key we got with our unit is a gray key that has Global Link stamped on it and the number G391 on it.  Phoenix should have keys for your locks.

If you cannot open you cannot even put new locks on. what a disaster. looks like they need to send you a master key so you can open and then send you new locks... this is terrible. I have a master set for locks that once were on a different RV I will look at that and see what it is to see if any chance it would be any good.   I found out the key master I have is Trimark... like the main entry door. Why should there be 5 different keys to get into storage bins. Hard to keep up with and some work ok and some don't ..Simplify and make it easier to buy locks and easier on my pockets..I found a key for an old storage cabinet I had fit one set of locks on the rv.

A local locksmith could help you out.  Many make house calls.  They work out of their van.  They could even key everything the same for you as long as the locks are in the same family.

Unless Phoenix changed recently, all keys for all Phoenix installed locks are the same for all Phoenixes.  That is, the side door latch from one Phoenix will open the side door on all Phoenixes with the same model latch.   Same for gas cover, back compartment, water cover (the ubiquitous CH-751),etc.

I would call Phoenix back, provide them with the information you've posted here, including that they sent you the wrong keys.  They should be able to provide you with the correct keys.

I did not know that.  That is unnerving, like buying a spec home with everyone in the neighborhood having the same house key.

Ron

I found that out when I had to replace the side door latch (twice now) the keys from the replacement latches were identical.   So I asked them.  They do (did) that for quick replacement without needing to cut keys was what I was told.   Also that it was a common practice in the RV industry. The majority of the locks were all CH-751 keys... A VERY common key, I must have had 4 or 5 laying around the house from other things I bought.  The other 2 were the front passenger side compartment and the tire cover.

Obviously, the vehicle keys were specific to my cutaway chassis from Ford.

At the next PC gathering, owners should walk around and open eachother's doors and compartments.......talk about "Family".

Funny you should mention that, at the last reunion someone did exactly that to our rig to demonstrate the identical keys. Phoenix HAS changed the type of lock so they may not all match.

We accidentally opened the wrong car once. There was an identical car parked a few spaces from ours and we chatted away while we walked up to what we thought was our car and unlocked it before we realized it wasn't ours. We quickly re-locked it, got in our car and left.

Sorry for the late response!  We've been visiting "the kids".  I appreciate all the responses and will start trying the suggestions this week now that we are back home!  Thanks to all of you on this forum - you don't realize how much your inputs help others!

First, thanks to everyone for their help.  After spraying a small amount of WD-40 into the key slot, I was able to make the G-391 key work.  I subsequently "lightly" lubricated the other locks and it's amazing how much better all of them work.  Case closed.

Great!

I personally like to use silicone spray to keep everything cleaner.  After the silicone spray dries relatively fast, it doesn't attract dirt.

At the beginning of every RV season, I go around our PC and silicone-lubricate all outside locks, latches, & hinges, and also the electric step.  Then everything works so smoothly for the entire RVing season.
