Potential problem
« on: June 03, 2018, 09:28:51 pm »
We just returned from a third trip this year and I decided it was time to crawl under and around to see if anything was shaking loose. Had to modify the rear latch groove (extended lower) for the battery door as it would not always stay closed, Cleaned the love bugs out of the screen I added for the radiator. Wow! Resealed the cables for the cable dish, had water running in on them into the cabinet after a year. While under the front and looking over the steering assembly and hoses I noticed a mark on the lower hose close to the pitman arm bolt that attaches to the steering link. When turning the front wheels all the way to the right the bolt and cotter key was rubbing against the lower hose. Never heard of this being a problem or causing one but imagining a lower hose blowing out from this was disturbing enough. A zip tie was all it took to get about a half inch clearance.

Always good to do as you did and check underneath for such issues.  Hopefully you caught it in time so it didn't damage the hose enough to require replacement.  I will definitely take a look at ours when we pick it up next week and make sure it too isn't rubbing.  Thanks for the heads up.

As I said this this may not be an issue too much but it bothered me. There is a mark on the hose where the bolt threads and cotter key rubbed the hose but no real abrasion. It may only be a tolerance issue and not indicative of all E450 chassis.  After almost 40 years in the retail and wholesale automotive industry I've seen many oddball problems. Had many RV customers over the years (large parking lot) that I helped with problems particular only to motorhomes. Of course this issue could be found on any E450 chassis besides a motorhome. After taking a look at the size and design of the lower hose I opted for a little PM now with a 10 cent zip tie.

I checked on a replacement hose and found prices from a low in the $60 range up to $120 for a premium hose. Even though I think they are the same from 2007 on availability on the road could be an issue plus the repair and labor cost and down time and potential engine damage from overheating.

I found that while I was installing a new steering stabilizer there was chaffing on the lower radiator hose from split loom that was placed on the transmission cooling line. This post had another area where they found chaffing. If you haven't looked under your coach and checked this lower hose you might want to. Also this lower hose is like an octopus, it branches off in multiple directions, so changing it is going to take a little time. Here are a couple pictures of mine.  It made some marks in the hose but not deep enough to reach the inner fabric. I used some Etrnabond tape on the area just to give it some added protection.

Thanks fellows for these tips.  The next time I am under our PC, I will inspect for abrasions on cooling hoses and such.
